A friend of mines 10 year old girl got hit by a car and the driver sped away. No one could get the plate because it had one of these tinted covers on it. I see a lot of aggressive drivers using this thing specifically for the purpose of breaking the law - so they can drive aggressively and not get reported. They should be completely illegal, period.
It's tinted and convex. It reflects the light when passing through toll booths, redlight cameras, and police plate readers.
Get a plate cover that is completely clear and not convex and you should be fine (atleast down here in Texas you will be)

That isn't just a plastic cover, it is tinted and has an ability to glare block lasers and speed camera ir flash.

How about a law requiring plates to be more weather resistant? Still can be read at night, won't fall apart. Everyone wins except the guy in prison churning them out for 10 cents an hour...
The cover shown in this report IS tinted. Not clear. It's not a heavy tint but enough to be illegal. If it were clear it is legal. Good friend of mine has been fined more times than 3 for the same thing.. I also have a tinted cover on one of my vehicles in hopes not to get cited
midgetmayo Even if it’s clear, it is illegal. Also, if your good friend has been fined multiple times, why would they be so foolish as to continue leaving it on their vehicle? Doesn’t make much sense, unless they enjoy being pulled over and wasting their money.
It's a choice. Like I said, I have them for my plates as well

And why in Ontario do I need a plate on the FRONT of my car when cars from Quebec, Alberta, etc. do not ?
herrbrained Come to the US. In most states, you need front plates. Why can't we just have rear plates ?
Having just back plates is a neat idea.
Having front plates, I can see it helping to find your car in the parking lot.
Yeah & when smaller, faster motorcycles only need rear plates & their plates are a fraction of the size!
one reason for a car to have a front plate... if your car was stolen and you reported it... if the guy is driving behind a cop, their camera can automatically read the plate and it will come back as stolen. he can then fall back and pull the vehicle over... and recover your property. another reason... what if the only footage of a vehicle used in a crime is of the front. maybe one of YOUR loved ones are hurt or killed. would you not like the offending vehicle to have a front plate so the police have something to work with?

When the color of the plate is changed, the cover becomes illegal.
I know its law. Law in British Columbia too. If I got a ticket I would take the cover off immediately. Not get 2 more. Then his choice and that what makes Canada so great.

Clear plate covers can reflect light when viewed at an angle obscuring the license plate number.

Police in Ontario like wasting their, yours and the court's time. Didn't ya know!? Welcome to the worst province in Canada to drive because of police. Apparently to them, sitting in their cars all day with speed guns and pulling people over for petty things are more important than catching thieves and murderers -- you know, the real criminals.

Teched TMG No they don't. Speed does no harm, incompetence does. Slow drivers also put people at risk all the time. Some of the slowest ones are the ones inadvertently running over people. What omniscient authority came up with all the speed limits that somehow apply to all vehicles in all driving conditions to all drivers of all abilities? Stop being as dumb as the speed limits please. :/

Police here have nothing to and have started to pull you over for small things. Also, the plates quality is bad

People with common sense take the cover off after the first ticket. This dude got 3 tickets and still keeps it on.

So take off the currently illegal covers and work to get the law changed. Complaining won't fix anything.
Well your local law enforcement shouldn't be pretentious asses an take advantage of ppl an ticket an harass them for that easy ticket!! Go get the fake bums on the corner robbing us blind, go get the drug dealers posted up at the corner store, be a police officer that cares more about doing the right thing, instead of hunting the easy ticket for the smallest lame ass offense, Clear cover on your tag!! Fucking lazy ass morons, plus he was black no wonder he was pulled over three times, "no drugs, no guns, damn bob we have to give him a ticket for something"!!! Lol
Once in a while complaining actually does fix a problem. It's all about getting media exposure, and if the exposure and following outrage is big enough self-serving politicians will act or risk losing public support and losing their cushy well-paying jobs.
Though in this particular case it won't lead anywhere, as they probably feel like they would be opening up a can of worms if they did allow plate covers. All of a sudden everyone and their grandma will use plate covers, many of which will be designed to obfuscate the license plate number to get the driver out of tickets. It's just easier for them to have a blanket ban on ALL types of covers rather than to allow covers and then try to regulate and enforce only the ones that make the plate difficult/impossible to read.

Read the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. Don't like it, stay home. In fact you can drive without a plate, on your own property.

It really must be a scam, between dealers an cops! The dealers clearly know the law but yet they can't help themselves to put a plate cover advertising they're stealership on top of your tag before you leave the lot!! Another great thing they do is sell you cars with illegal tint, you leave the lot get pulled a week later an ticketed by enforcement for tint that was clearly on the car when you bought it! Then they want you to pay ticket an for tint on your car to be corrected, Happened to me multiple times this year!!

I love the comments. It's funny because none of them address the real issue. First off as stated in the video, anything that touches or blocks any part of the plate is illegal. That includes coloured clear convex or flat covers. Even those boarders that advertise...all illegal. The issue here has nothing to do with the plate cover and 90% to do with profiling. The GTA is notorious for it.

The one shown on the video is not "CLEAR"! It is "TINTED"! and should be ticketed! I saw some there are so tinted, you can hardly see at day! Forget about at night!!! I have a "CLEAR" cover for years and years, never even got pull over because of it. I got pull over with it once, because of speeding. The cop didn't even mention it! Please don't made it sound like you are a "victim"! If I am a cop, I see a tinted cover like the one on the video, I pull you over too!
The point of tinted covers like his is to make it harder for police speed radar to catch you.
