The song tells the life story of a girl who has been the victim of periodic abuse.
The opening lines of the song clearly show that she has given a place in her life to a devil who is taking illegitimate advantage of her and she is aware of this but she cannot do anything because she herself has allowed him to interfere in her life.
After some time that girl get freedom from this devil but now she is completely shattered.
Her life is no longer under her control.
The line *my only child* is used in the sense of that *There is an innocent child inside all of us who do not have the courage to raise our voice but we can feel his pain.*
I Found this song a while ago and when I watched the season finale of Reign and this song started playing at the last scene it was so overwhelming 💔

there's so many comments involving the Reign, I've seen em before on other videos involving The Lumineers. Guess it's like how many other artists get recognized through these programs, I especially think of Grey's Anatomy, MANY songs I've come to love came from that show. But it's different, comparative to me listening on the radio and just finding something that clicks.
But it bums me out especially when flocks and roves of people come and just blurt out what showcased the song, cos I feel like it separates it more from what it can make YOU(they, as in the horde of commenters) feel. Versus, like, it revolving around a character in a show. It's trying it's damnedest to make you FEEL for something/someone else.
It takes away the REALITY that, in my own opinion, The Lumineers tried to express. As if those selected only view the song through a film of the majesty that is the show/program it spawned from.
I got interested in The Lumineers from my Uncle, through a rather annoying means (speakers, _very loud speakers_). So I suppose I'm cut off from that theory of mine, double.

It's a song about not living the life you wanted and realizing its to late. Falling for things that seem that they will help but cut you apart when trying to get through loss.
I love the music but knowing that Neyla broke apart from the band I can't help but see sadness in her eyes during the performance.
Ohh I hate that they cut out Patience at the end... It's just so important that those two go together and instead all I hear is this automated voice covering up that amazing piano piece, grrr. I loved the performance but still
