I have to agree with ariel, I love the kettle books name!! Hot potato makes me think that I'm just trying to get it off my hand (frantic, desperate) while kettle books is about both the time limit & the end goal of tea/discussion.
I love Ariel's logic and naming for the boiling kettle books. Makes total sense. I think Hot Potato can be the name for another bookish situation that I and I'm sure other people also experience, when a book is hyped up too much I just don't want to read it until the excitement dies down.
I think Kettle Book is definitely the move. It’s a fun idea, but I feel like hot potato is more of a book that’s really exciting right now but you want the hype to die down before you read it (like I just started reading the Ali Hazelwood STEMist series and I think I’m enjoying it more that I’m able to feel my own feelings and not worry about other people’s opinions)
1.Raeleen we are on the same wavelength. I know nothing about Atonement but I keep thinking about reading it and watching the movie. 2. The freeze frame had me dying for the TBR challenge hahaha 3. Alternative names for the hot book you need to read ASAP: Hot Off the Press Book, Little Teapot Book, Rocket Books (because they are launching), Beaver Books (because you need to read them now dam it hahaha), or Honeybee Books (because the books are buzzing right now). 4. Sending love & hugs 💕
Last year I bought myself a small hand printing press and it's been sooo much fun - I can print my own christmas cards and all sorts of other cute things. 10/10 would recommend!
Proof that On November 1, Halloween is over: I live a block outside of a town that renames itself to Monsterville every October - they even change the town sign. They go ALL OUT for the entire month, but obviously especially for Halloween evening.People come from other states to trick or treat in Monsterville because they have amazing decorations and even a haunted house competition. On November 1, the town sign is put back up and the only Halloween decorations you see around town are the ones that are actively being taken down.
The same weekend you had your sleep-a-thon, I also slept a lot! I slept 14 hours on Saturday night and then 11 more hours on Sunday night. No reason; was just tired. I mean, maybe my body was fighting some germs - how would I know? Ha. And yeah, it wasn't the extra sleep where I feel all groggy and slow afterward... I felt actually refreshed and reset! And, yes, CALM.
What about "a cup of tea book"? You wanna drink it while it's hot, but if you leave it too long it'll be cold and sad and unsalvageable. You can make a new cup of tea, but the shame of the wasted cup of tea still lingers, and a new cup will never taste as sweet as the first one would have.
Do you ever plan on bringing the book games section back ? I used to love them but I understand that it must be a lot of work thinking of different concepts and questions
I listen on pocketcasts but I did have to hunt down the video so that I could put my vote behind the boiling kettle!! (I feel like a hot potato book could have a few definitions.... a book you're constantly lending to friends because you need everyone to read it, a book that you have to wait until the hype dies down to read, or a book that everyone keeps trying to gift you bc they think you'll like it but they're Wrong)
Haha, so fun to see you haul The Book of Eels (or Ålevangeliet, as it's originally titled in Swedish). I haven't actually read it but it was very talked about a few years ago when it came out, and I've been a bit curious about it. It also won the August prize for non fiction which is probably the most prestigious literary prize in Sweden (aside from the Nobel Prize I guess), so it's probably very good!
I'm breaking from my usual lurker self to recommend a book: Journal of a Solitude by May Sarton. I think it might fit the Books Unbound vibes, although caveat that I read it in college and don't remember much except I liked it. Definitely unsound women but also has cozy hygge qualities. It's pretty short and perhaps a classic!
I'm so happy that The Book of Eels has found its way to this pod!! In Swedish, the og language, it's called The Eel Evangelium (Ålevangeliet), which I think is so much cooler. Get ready for a heartfelt, weird and interesting tale
I read _The Thirty-Nine Steps_ earlier this year and liked it. I have seen the Alfred Hitchcock version of the story several times - with its many differences from the book. But the most fun I had with the story was the stage play based on the Hitchcock movie, spoofing it. It was a ton of fun. Hot Potato? I think Ariel’s “Boiling Kettle” is the much better term for a book that was hot in the moment, but whose moment has passed to get the most out of consuming it. A “Hot Potato” book would be a new release that you gift to a friend without reading it, and that friend loans it to somebody else without reading it.
I share a birthday with Raeleen and I’m jealous! Since I was a kid and watched “Thirteen Going on Thirty”, I’ve always wanted to be thirty, flirty, and thriving✨💅 I’ll only be a measly 24 this November 13, but I can live vicariously through Raeleen🥰Happy Early Birthday, Raeleen!
Ariel, have you read Lady Susan by Jane Austen? If not, perhaps you should pick it up yet this year because it’s short and it’s in letters. If you have read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
It's interesting how you feel about Halloween being on a Thursday. I don't really celebrate it, so what I'm actually expecting is the 1st and 2nd of November for the Day of the Dead.
Maybe a headline book. A get it while it's hot kind of book. An extra book, like extra extra read all about it. There's printing press trivia attached to it, so it's more on brand with your podcast. And it implies the added pressure to be part of the conversation, or at least the know. I still like kettle book though, it'd make for cute merch.
The license plate slogan for my province (Ontario) is "Yours to Discover." Oddly, and to the best of my knowledge, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland & Labrador don't have license plate slogans. I don't think that Nunavut has one either. If I'm wrong, someone please let me know.
I vote for whistling kettle. Or boiling kettle because that is a screaming urgent situation a hot potato is silent and solid and ready to melt butter but not super urgent.
I was baffled by the cover reveal for Sunrise on the Reaping. The cover to be revealed stock image was better than that final product. I am not even buying myself a copy and I am hoping they change it😂
I literally just finished the 39 Steps last week! The Hitchcock movie is wildly different, but I definitely prefer the movie. The book was a solid, middle of the road 5/10 for me. Enjoy!
To add more context to the Lapvona betrayal-Raeleen didn’t betray Ariel by reading Lapvona, Raeleen betrayed Ariel by reading The Flatshare, and then another book I can’t remember, so Ariel wanted revenge. Ariel’s revenge was that she got Lapvona early and was going to read it before Raeleen because Raeleen couldn’t get it yet. But Ariel took a long time to get through it and her revenge deadline was creeping up and so Raeleen decided “wouldn’t it be funny if I binged Lapvona and finished it before Ariel, foiling her revenge plan!”
Atonement is my favourite book of all time. It introduced me to Ian Mckewan as my favourite author. I have now read all but 4 of his novels and somehow even the books I didn't like of his I am glad I read. I think your love of weird books would suit his novel Nutshell. Very strange written from the perspective of a fetus but truly incredible.
I'm 5'8" and actually feel tall because I am taller than 95% of women I know in my life. So, since you're on a screen, I just assumed I was taller than the both of you because the odds of my experience pointed that way. So I was shocked to find out how tall you both are! It's nice to have some tall buddies 😂
What about a tea book? If you steep it too long it can become too bitter and bleh. If you do take out the bag, but forget about it, it goes cold, and sure you could reheat it, but it's not the same. So either way, you waited too long. Also, an under-steeped, or weak tea book, could be one that's not marinated in its own plot for long enough (I know that seems mean, but I spotted a loop hole and I 'had' to think up a thing to go with it :D) I like the phrase hot potato book, but it sounds like one that you want to get rid of as quickly as possible in case people see you have it, and think you like it.
oo I like tea book. The issue I saw with the kettle book is that you can just turn the kettle on again and its just the same as it would have been before. I think the missing the moment reheating isn't as good aspect works well tea book!
I often find myself wondering if Raeleen has listened to the great gatsby musical and what she thinks of it 🤔 this is not at all connected to this episode, just a random thought 😅
I have to agree with ariel, I love the kettle books name!! Hot potato makes me think that I'm just trying to get it off my hand (frantic, desperate) while kettle books is about both the time limit & the end goal of tea/discussion.
I agree!

Can we get a peek at Ariel's Halloween costume somewhere? I'm soooo curious right now!
Dang. I listened to the early release but came to the video hoping there would be a picture embedded.
i’m guessing it’ll be on the pod’s instagram soon! fingers crossed 🤞

Ariel!!! That dress story is insane!!! The look was so gorgeous I can’t believe you only got it that morning!!! Cosmic

It’s about to be my EEL ERA. That’s crazy information

Yes totally, had the same thought!!!!
Man Ariel, should have ask Ray to have crocheted you a slouchy hat 💕
Those books sound amazing. No doubt you'll do it.
I agree that the hot potato name does not fit the vibe…. Cup of tea, melting icecream, melting chocolate….. we have better options!!
Do you ever plan on bringing the book games section back ? I used to love them but I understand that it must be a lot of work thinking of different concepts and questions

Ariel should do a ‘books about books’ section on the truck!
Fun fact about Thirty Nine Steps. John Buchan was a governor general of Canada.
I'm so happy that The Book of Eels has found its way to this pod!! In Swedish, the og language, it's called The Eel Evangelium (Ålevangeliet), which I think is so much cooler. Get ready for a heartfelt, weird and interesting tale
How about The Cold French Fry for that book category?
I read _The Thirty-Nine Steps_ earlier this year and liked it. I have seen the Alfred Hitchcock version of the story several times - with its many differences from the book. But the most fun I had with the story was the stage play based on the Hitchcock movie, spoofing it. It was a ton of fun.

I read the title of this video and I am already scared for Ariel 😂

39 Steps the movie is one of my favorite Hitchcock films! Interested to see how you like the book, I’ve heard it’s different than the movie.

I like KETTLE BOOK
TEAM JACOB FOREVER! 🐺
A hot potato book should be a book you read but then something about it gives you the ick so bad you throw it down and never pick it back up again.
What about a tea book? If you steep it too long it can become too bitter and bleh. If you do take out the bag, but forget about it, it goes cold, and sure you could reheat it, but it's not the same. So either way, you waited too long.

I don’t like hot potato. Catchy but not accurate
I’m team boiling kettle !
Raeleen there is a new Shrek movie coming out not sure if you knew about that I just found out myself.
John Buchan's surname is pronounced BUCK-an.😀
I often find myself wondering if Raeleen has listened to the great gatsby musical and what she thinks of it 🤔 this is not at all connected to this episode, just a random thought 😅
❤❤❤
love your podcast, kia ora from readers in NZ
I do kinda love the potato consistency I'm ngl.... tentatively team hot potato
I was team hot potato too but ngl Ariel convinced me it just wasn’t right 🤔
@AnaRodriguez-wn8qq I know! She makes a good argument, there's gotta be a happy medium here.... Maybe something like steamed potato or boiled potato 😭
The 39 Steps was a fantastic movie, but not such a great book, IMO. Then again, I know people who ha e loved the book.
Am so curious to know how you guys do home projects like painting etc. without having your cats get everywhere in the chaotic mess!
