    Thank you for both endorsing the Timemaster and explaining some of the significant shortcomings of the DeWalt. I have been considering a Timemaster and this has helped me with my decision.

    I got this, although with the 344cc engine, and I love it! I am not using it commercially. I am a homeowner with about an acre of grass to mow, to include a ditch with oftentimes long wet grass. This is perfect. It can't be manhandled like a 21 inch mower. Gotta learn to let the machine do its thing. I understand the controls could be an issue, but they don't bother me at all. I am use to running a snow blower all winter long.

      o.k. i`m hearing a lot of stuff here about the de walt walk-behind, some first-hand and accurate, some second- hand, and repeating disinformation, some first-hand by some folks who haven`t mastered how this mower is best operated. i`ve had mine about 3 years ( mine is the cub cc800, which is the same mower, as is a troybuilt and craftsman version, in differant colors.) who actually manufactures it? or, i should say, who actually buys all the various off-the-shelf components , which are all probably used in in many different models/brands/designs, and assembles it? m.t.d., i think. mine has the slightly larger m.t.d. engine, about 380cc, which has forced-pressure lubrication with a spin-on external filter( small automotive-style, available everywhere under different brand names.) i`m sure this was a somewhat more expensive engine to manufacture, and i see the later cc800s, and all the others seem to use the briggs, about 340cc, splash lube. otherwise as best i can tell, these units are all alike. i use mine at a country cabin yard, which often gets quite high before my first spring mow. also under outlying oaks, where a big tractor can`t get. pretty rough cutting. i did cut my own suburban yard in austin once, breaking it in. it did a beautiful cut, and quickly, but this beast is really overkill for a medium-sized yard. the pros- cc800 is pretty rugged. i almost bought a rough-cut mower( brush hog) for the job, but decided the cub could hack it. it does . i actually mowed into a weed- hidden stump recently, and it broke the blade drive belt, no other damage. not terribly hard to replace. the engine is strong! almost impossible to stall down, just about impossible to kill unless running into really high growth in too high a gear.( which also means if you do that you are overloading, and overheating) which brings me to a point..... this is a 4 speed manual transmission( plus reverse) . there is no slippage, no torque converter, meaning that anyone who doesn`t understand how to use a manual transmission, how to hear and know when you`re running too high a gear( the driving speed), compared to the mowing load( the load on the engine as the blade cuts the grass) either shouldn`t be operating this mower, or should be trained how to. if that sounds intimidating to automatic-only auto drivers, it really isn`t, provided you get instruction from someone who actually knows what they`re doing. if you mow up into an obstruction, you can simply let go of the bars and even step back, the blade will automatically disengage, and the forward motion will automatically stop. it`s pretty fool-proof. then you reverse and back up. the left(drive) and right( blade engagement) handles must be held down while mowing. the spring tension is fairly strong. though i`m an average-sized guy, this doesn`t bother me at all, even afrer a long while, but i have rather strong hands, due to the work and sports i`ve always done. several people have complained about this and i think it`s not too lady- friendly. i want to emphasize that you do not have to work these controls , or select different gears while mowing a field. you just select the proper gear, adjust your throttle setting according to conditions, and mow. you do not , repeat - do not need to let off of the drive handle (which would bring you to a stop) in order to turn. you just turn! it takes a bit of muscle to make a hard,sharp turn, but doesnt require a lumberjack. on fairly open ground, you don`t make hard turns that frequently. oh- i always wear gloves when mowing with the cub. if not ,sooner or later, after letting up on either of the levers, you will pinch your hand between lever and handlebar when re-engaging. not badly, it`s just irritating . if you pay attention you can keep from doing that, but it`s easier to just wear gloves. if you mow where i do, and have to occasionally pick a dead oak limb out of the path, its best to be wearing gloves anyway. ever been stung by a scorpion? not fun! in summery, i like this mower a lot. it has a few rough edges, which the designers could have gotten around for a few more dollars, but when you get used to how it likes to work, it`s a mowing beast, and not difficult to operate except, perhaps in tighter spaces, which it`s really not made for anyway. the engine is quite powerful for the application, and not too loud. it has electric start, as well as recoil if the battery should die. it is the quickest-starting engine, hot or dead-cold i have ever used. i mean instant, when i haven`t used it in a month, as long as the battery has a charge. the engine has counter- rotating balance weights internally, which means it is very smooth for a big single-cylinder. i`ve had no engine trouble whatsoever except that some times upon starting, or seconds after, it begins to very obviously run way too rich, sputtering a bit, smoking black smoke a bit.( which always means too much gasoline in the mix. not an oil problem, which would put out a distinctively bluish smoke.) i would not run an engine doing this for very long, but it has passed through this in about 30 seconds every time. if i tap on the float bowl it clears up quickly, which means almost certianly the float is sometimes sticking open (too much fuel) upon startup. the carb is very accessable, but i haven`t taken the float bowl off yet. this is is to me an obviously easy problem to solve should it become more frequent. i hope i`ve given some feel for this mowers strengths and intended uses. happy mowing!

    I settled on the Toro Turfmaster and absolutely love it. It too has a dual blade system like the time master but fortunately the blades cutting pads overlap so there's no stripe. The biggest fault of the time Master is the itty bitty gas tank but fortunately that's an easy fix and a full gallon gas tank can be installed.

      i`ve used a cub cc800 (essentialy the same mower) on my land for three years, with some pretty rough cutting.it`s held up very well. but mind you, that`s me, the owner, an older guy with experience at just what a given machine will and will not take. in the hands of a hired hand who has no real vested interest, and probably doesn`t know much about machines in general, this ( basicly homeowner) mower might not hold up as well. it has some shortcomings,none of them serious, that are pretty clearly because of a marketing attempt to keep cost competitive, unfortuneately. but....... what i want to address here is this video in which this guy says you have to depress the left-hand drive lever in order to turn. dude- what on earth are you talking about? this is just not true. the mower will swing around very quickly, though you must put a little muscle into it. ( i`m a pretty average-sized man) you can easily turn full circle around a tree base. it sounds like this guy may be mowing short grass in 4th (top) gear at full throttle, which is well over a sustainable walking speed, then expecting a full-power turn. 4th is too high a ratio to mow with, clearly meant for transporting at a medium throttle setting. 3rd is perfect for average length grass at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. to the guy who made the video, i say do some experimenting and work on your technique

  • @shwndh

    I have the Troy Built version of the Dewalt. I agree, the drive throttle is not well thought out at all. Your hand just gets fatigued when turning a lot. Also, there's too much work to back it up because it's so heavy and it takes a few sec to shift it into reverse. It would be better if the throttle lever was below the handle instead of above it so you could use your fingers to modulate instead of your whole palm. I'm going to see if I can modify mine by flipping that lever around and rerouting the cables.

    • @paulb2769
      @paulb2769 2 місяці тому +2

      I heard of someone ordering an extra right hand lever and mounting it upside down on the left side. Making it much easier to engage the drive system.
      Cannot believe that the manufacturer has not redesigned this very bad design!!! Just unacceptable !!

    The DeWalt is not built for residential lawns, it's for large areas. It's not meant to turn frequently. If you are mowing an acre of tall grass and weeds, you typically mow in squares. Just about any mower will mow your easy lawns.

      i have been a mason( mostly stone, bur repair all kinds of masonry. and some tile work) for many years. i have always done quality work and cannot possibly compete with the " let`s get this done and get paid" guys without going to the poorhouse. every person who does completed, quality work has to deal with potential clients who want a "bargain". i have found that very often the clients who pay the least are the hardest to satisfy, and allways want more.... for less $. don`t let yourself be talked down when you have figured a fair deal. you will regret it. time spent working extra hard for your money is time that could be spent looking for better customers, which will pay off greatly in the long run. i`ve allso found that bargain-searching type customers will recommend you as a bargain to others just like them. they need you, but you don`t need them! especially if you`re doing this work on the side and growing your bussiness, you can afford to be a little picky. put another way , you really can`t afford not to. good luck!

      I worked for a lawn care company when I was younger and I can’t imagine using this thing all day. Especially after using a hydrostatic walk behind. This would be good for a homeowner with a long open lawn where you don’t have to do a lot of turning. But then you’re probably better off with a typical residential rider. In my opinion Dewalt dropped the ball on this one.
