I worked on our irrigation system this weekend. I found that the hairdryer was an immense help in getting the 1/4” tubing on the manifolds. I may have looked funny but I got the job done! Now I’m getting ideas for all the tubs on the patio. 😳
Yep, that tubing can be a little stiff if it's cool. It was pretty warm when I did this. I've found some of the tubing to be very flexible and pliable and some to be very stiff. I like the soft, flexible stuff, but it's hard to find.
Great video. I have really wondered about the earthbox automatic watering system. I hear very mixed results. This set up you have going makes sense. I really like it. Thank you!!!!
@@BIGALTX it seems like a lot of people complain about the height of where the set up is and how they have their boxes. And they can only do five boxes or something lame like that. I like yours. Gives me hope for my future. Lol. #LeanderTX
Long story short... I've had them for 10+ years. A business was throwing them away. Can't get more. 😡 Here are some on Amazon, but they are pricey: amzn.to/3o6KanQ Here's something at SAMS that might work for one grow bag: www.samsclub.com/p/cambro-bus-box-2pk-storage/prod22321945?xid=plp_product_1
If you search around you will find something. It may need modification but something will show up. The bottom of a plastic drum with gravel, a lined wooden frame. Like the man says, I got mine from work, as a senior manager told a supervisor to get rid of them. She had kept them for months as she knew they were useful. No, the bully said what??? Get rid of them now. She said anyone could take them, she told me the story. A few months later the idiot bully senior manager wanted them back. Lol. Clueless idiots running things. That's why things are so bad. But apparently he's diverse, if you get my drift. Two ways.
I take it your in Texas? Peppers like warm conditions and Texas weather has looked like the stock market. Last year my peppers looked sick after I planted them, so I fertilized and used calcium nitrate and even spayed them for blight and nothing worked. When the temperature warmed up and stayed constant the peppers greened up, bloomed and started to grow, I ended up making about 25 gallons of peppers off of six plants.
Yep, peppers LOVE the heat. They will snap back when it warms up. Remember, these are in containers... and containers warm up quicker than the soil (another reason to use containers, maybe?) 😎 Make sure you give them plenty of Phosphorus. On flowering veggies I use 10-20-10 when I transplant them, and it seems to work great. Soon I will start giving them 20-20-20 water soluble about every 2 weeks. Here's what I use: hosstools.com/product/20-20-20-garden-fertilizer/ I also use this.. it's amazing: hosstools.com/product/micro-boost/
In Texas there is probably no need to blow out the lines so the bend the ends end cap method would be easy and cheap. In my case because I need to blow out, I find the screw off end caps to be better because I can quickly and easily blow out each line.
Since an earth box waters from underneath… The reservoir… Water is not draining down through the fertilizer. Therefore, I don’t think you can leach out any of the nutrients. I think that’s one reason earth box is such a good method. As I understand it, because the water wicks up through the fertilizer and distributes it in the earth box it cannot come down and drain out. Hope that makes sense.
No. But that is why the pressure regulator is so crucial. It keeps the pressure constant to all the emitters. I’ve never seen a problem on this type of set up with overwatering unless they were different GPH emitters.
Question- The link to Hoss tools combo has a pressure regulator marked for 12 psi. The amazon link shows that regulator is 25 psi? 25 seems a bit high for lines? or did I miss a detail in video, like 2 regulators instead of 1?
I’m thinking of trying this, what do you use the “couplings” on your list for? And can I use 1 gallon emitters at the same time as the 2 gallon emitters? We are also on well water and have to be careful of water usage. I’m going to show hubby your video and see if he thinks it’s doable! I hope so!
Yes, you can use 1 gal emitters. The couplings are for repairs... or mistakes.. In case you have to join 2 pieces of pipe together. It's just handy to have some around.
Great Explanation of how to start drip irrigation with containers. Question, where do you buy your Berger soil mix from? I know you’re a “student” of Mr. Leon, and wondered where you buy it? Sure appreciate your help!
I think Mr Leon uses his own mix, but not sure. I get the BM7 from Hughes Plant Farm in Bullard, TX I think it's $14 for a 3 CU FT bag. It was $13 last year I believe... but heck... everything has gone up
Thanks for your help! You’re correct about Leon, he adds his own wood chip compost with Berger 7. Drove up to meet him two years ago, what a guy. Hope I’m doing that well at 86!
We just installed a drip system on our blackberries but we're not getting even drips. We've got a pressure regulator but it doesn't seem to be working. 20 plants on a 90' row using the half inch black tubing. The first several nipples are blasting water, while the ones at the end are barely dripping. What are we doing wrong?
If you are on flat ground I’m not sure what could be causing it. If you’re on a slope, that could be your problem. I had some problems like that when I had blackberries planted on a slope.
Allen your garden is really pretty. Is this year's garden or in the past. I'm way behind you if this is present. It's been so cold here and we had a late freeze so I didn't plant Mt tomatoes till about 24 of April.
THIS year.. I videoed this a few days ago. The garden is really looking great. I'll try to do a video next week showing the veggies planted in the soil. This vid was just about the containers 😎👍
Great setup. I found a ton of this stuff on clearance in my area most as much as 90% off so I purchased all kinds of stuff. It looks as if you have the one main line for your whole garden. Is the water pressure consistent with all that you have running at the same time. Also is that a 25psi reducer
Oh... and no I don't think there is a pressure or volume drop along the line. That's the function of the pressure reduction valve. It helps distribute all the water at the same rate. Yes, I have one "main" line with several lines coming off it. But actually, all the split-off lines (the 1/2" lines) are considered "main line"
Thanks for the videos. This is a simple and effective design, but it helps watching the video also.
Great... glad to help!
Very attractive.
Thanks, Rog!
So much great information. thank you for this
Glad it was helpful, Caren!
Great instruction. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
Will give it another shot to set up I have some container but most in ground
I'll try to do a drip irrigation video on "in ground' crops soon.
Finally, we can do this to my Pops' garden. It'll probably get done this weekend!
Glad I could help.
It’s pretty easy, and he will LOVE it!
Thanks for taking time to teach how to garden effectively. I learn so much from your videos!
I love teaching.
Thanks for watching 😎

This is basically what EB sells for their "automatic watering system"... this way is just cheaper.

Does water come out the EB reservoir overflow when using the timer? If so, how much and could that lead to losing nutrients including calcium?
Since an earth box waters from underneath… The reservoir… Water is not draining down through the fertilizer. Therefore, I don’t think you can leach out any of the nutrients. I think that’s one reason earth box is such a good method.

Hahaha ... me too!
Great video! Gave us lots to think about. Where did you get the trays for the grow bags?
A biz was throwing them away.
Can't get any more ☹
For a dozen plants, a hose or watering can looks easier.
Nope. These have to be watered most every day in the TX summer.
Watering can is too time consuming.

Maybe I do... just never have added one.
@@BIGALTX I think you do need one. Read this and see if you agree. www.irrigationtutorials.com/irrigation-backflow-preventers/
Could you not just use drip line emitters in each tub and no it us wicking tubs too?
I do a variety of things
On some things I use an emitter in the tub, on some, I put a 1/4" line down the fill tube
Both work fine
Actually, EarthBoxes need to be watered down the fill tube.
All my EBs have 1/4" lines down the fill tube
You need to take a chainsaw and trim them yellow squash up some, their going to take over your garden!
hahaha
I might have to DO that!
