  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a theory in psychology. It argues that there are five stages of human needs that motivate our behavior. #learn #motivation

    Script:
    Abraham Maslow proposed his theory in 1943 after studying what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein or Eleanor Roosevelt.
    STAGE 1
    First, there are physiological needs, such as the need to breathe, eat, drink or sleep. The moment we got enough of that and we feel awake and our bellies are full, we get motivated by the next thing.
    STAGE 2
    Now we want safety. We try to earn money, build up resources and look for shelter that protects us against dangers. Once we are satisfied and feel safe, we have time to think about what we want next.
    STAGE 3
    At stage three we seek love and belonging. We desire to be close to family and friends, belong to a society or join a gang. But the moment we feel completely part of a group we already wish to be a little different than the rest.
    At stage four we look for esteem, self-confidence, and respect from our peers. We want to be someone. If we have money, we buy a fancy watch. If we have a brain, we write or think or work a lot. Motivation to perform and compete is now at its highest. Students, sportsmen, and inventors excel. Neil Armstrong even flew to the moon.
    STAGE 5
    Only if we breathe and drink and eat and sleep enough and we feel safe and part of a group and still special, only then we can reach level five: self-actualization. Now we can relax, be creative, accept facts for what they are, give back or do whatever we want. No more pressure, unless of course there is trouble below.
    If you are a leader and believe in the theory, use it. First, make sure everyone has eaten well. Then make them feel safe and help them belong to a group. Once they feel they belong, they are ready to stand out and excel.

    It's an amazing model, and sadly many people misinterpret it and say it's untrue just because there are many examples of us giving attention to say needs in tier 3 when a tier 2 is not fully met. But the way this model works is not that we need to gain a 100% satisfaction in one tier before we can move onto the next. In fact, we're giving attention to all tiers simultaneously, but the lower tier needs will take up more of our time, energy, and resources, because they're much more vital for survival. If those needs are satisfied, we can then allocate more energy and time to higher tier needs. This model is dynamic. The amount of attention we give each tier changes every minute, depending on how our environment and wellbeing is changing. But no, you don't stop being creative just because you are starving. You just spend a lot less time thinking about creativity and more time thinking on where to get food until that need is satisfied.

      @DosuKinu 2 роки тому +7

      Exactly, I gave a lot of attention to tier 4 and 5 and neglected the third, but now I suffer from it a lot. Here the concept makes total sense as I still built a solid base for the top two tiers but I can't fully say I'm happy and at peace because I'm lacking a lot on one or two of the lower tiers. We have to see it as a puzzle more than a step by step journey

    • @MatthewAshworth
      @MatthewAshworth 2 роки тому +8

      @@DosuKinu Yes indeed. A lot of your energy and attention goes onto fulfilling the missing tier needs, so less energy and attention is left on self-actualisation. If the tiers with unfulfilled needs are met, we can focus better on higher tier needs and self-actualisation. So it's often a good idea to sort out the missing needs first before moving up in full. :)

    Makes a lot of sense. Whenever I'm in a relationship, I tend to want to do better for myself. When people say, "You need to learn to love yourself", I think you can to a certain extent but there seems to be an innate need to feel wanted by someone.

    • @cartergomez5390
      @cartergomez5390 2 роки тому +8

      I agree with everything you said, Homer Simpson, but that innate need to feel wanted by someone is only just a need for God to love you. You can recreate that feeling you are searching for by yourself if you only try.

    Excellent video. Very concise in such a short time. Understand that you aren't at a particular stage really, but split between certain stages - maybe 30% in one level and 20% here and there. It helps to continue looking for understanding at all the levels and meeting your needs even when you think you have moved above even physiological needs. You will understand more about the lower levels the more you move up, and see that you can keep growing them to further meet the needs. This is the path to self actualization, it's not a straight one.

    Good video. Maslow's theory though it seems logical and can be inspiring, it's just not how humans function. We function more as a heterarchy than a hierarchy and that's a good thing. We're flexible and adaptable, not stuck in a rigid linear formation.

I didn't use the exact same phrasing but it was in the same order and same weighting system of importance. He must of had the same gift of reduction analysis.

      I actually endured a paradigm shift in my mind in which I began to theorize how one could achieve a self disciplined mind and acess their genius. I am only 14 years old and one day I hope to inspire another enlightment age. This ambition was created through reflection of my own accomplishments. I started forming habits that would continuously challenge myself and I have definitely changed for the better. I just have a passion or interest for anything because I search for meaning in anything I read or watch, then talk about it with anyone. Then over time i reflected over my transition and came to a similar conclusion on the devlopement of the mind. I am at the moment reading up on Einstein and hope to learn from him. Glad I see someone else with the same mindset. I also like the point about original thought. What i think truly makes a difference is the action as that is what goes down as history to inspire future generations to come.

    Just a thought, but I wish I could design society around Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, basically meeting everyone’s needs starting with physiological and safety needs, then developing communities to make real connections and build everyone’s self-esteem, hopefully self-actualization would be achievable for more people.
    My “solution” would be to encourage people at the top to help people at the bottom… I don’t think it’s that crazy and I actually think it’s possible and maybe the most practical way to help as many people…

    Levels of management typically include top management (executives responsible for overall direction), middle management (managers overseeing departments), and front-line or first-line management (supervisors and team leaders directly managing employees). This hierarchical structure helps distribute tasks and responsibilities within an organization.

    Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a theory in psychology. It argues that there are five stages of human needs that motivate our behavior. This theory explains the inter-relationship among needs, motivation, and behavior.

    Friends are the most important thing in life.
    They solve so many problems.
    That what most people dont have.
    What they have are egoistical emotional parasites that drain their positivity and energy.
    Real friends are rare.

    You don't NEED to be a part of a group to self actualize. In fact in order to self actualize it's good to enjoy your own company and find value in yourself. Though that's not to say you need to be a loner.
    This can be very difficult and most don't accomplish it but finding a path for yourself and living with your own desires in mind will help you on that path.
    No one elee can help you do this because it is so personal but good luck none the less.

      It depends on what you self actualoze as, but generally everyone needs some sort of support group. Also the pyrimid is not threshold based you can be in multiple steps at the same time, its just you may be predominantly in one or the other.

    i have to disagree with the claim that one has to have prestige and respect from others before being able to reach stage 5... Zen masters do not seek such ego gratifications and they live in a self-actualized way.

      Actually, this doesn't have to be orderly. Many graphics from other sources includes sex on the level 1. But it's not a necessity at all. Esp. for women, they have to feel love first. And for some, self-actualization are way more important.

    2:01 This is where the plan to destroy people starts. The leader makes sure....... I disagree with this interpretation. This is a retarding of the individuals growth. The individual must act in order to progress. The leader cannot learn for the group. He can teach, but each person needs to struggle and learn for themselves. Note: I do not profess omniscience.
