I have another comment after watching part 2 on jills channel. One thing that might work is to take a page out of jewelry/makeup sellers books. Let friends host a plant sale at their house for their family and friends. You bring the plants and they bring the customers. The host can get some free plants. Makes for a fun experience and gets people more excited about gardening and helps get you connected to more customers.
Ah ha so here is part 1. We are going to volunteer some time, one weekend, with a farmers market person we follow on IG and have been doing some videos with Bootstrap Farmer, Paris Natural Farms.
Hey! I love Bootstrap and I actually follow Paris Natural Farms on Instagram...found them thru Bootstrap! Such a cool opportunity that you're getting to work with them!
Hi guys just watched both of your videos, great advice from both of you. We are up north in Ontario and on our farm we do an annual event in the spring celebrating our first opening day and our dog Molly's birthday lol. This year we have decided to incorporate a spring plant sale into the event and have a few other local farms coming with some of their plant starts as well. Along with this we have a chainsaw carver and a ceramic worker coming to do an on site demo, big BBQ and live music from a local musician. 'We are trying to create a great community event here at the farm before the summer farmers market opens up. Just want to let you both know that you always give me the inspiration that I need to keep moving forward with things. Thanks and hope you all have a great season.
One thing I know from last year- don't start as many tomatoes- I had a bunch left over. Another thing is people want the plain old red and orange bell peppers.
Awesome video and discussion. Excited going to try & sell this year in my driveway so really appreciate the video & suggestions. Just got my state license so it's happening need to at least sell in plants the cost for that. No farm here just a urban Gardner. I am looking at doing more compact varieties as most of us can find a pot or bucket to grow in.
I too am considering more dwarf varieties for my balcony garden. Not just dwarf veggies but flowers too. I started with thumbelina zinnias a couple weeks ago but now I want mini everything. Who doesn’t love mini?! :)
That’s a hard question to answer. My best answer would be to grow what you can feasibly afford to grow AND feel confident that you can care for. It’s easy to start 1000s of seeds but you have to consider if you have the time to care for that many and if you can afford to invest in the supplies it takes to care for them before selling them.
The variety packs are the best! Medicinal herb pack: camomile, buzz buttons, ect. Cooking herb pack: basil, rosemary, ect. You could do a pack with peppers and beans.
I was thinking of doing this, but got stumped with how to identify each plant. You'd have to make a marker for each cell in the pack instead of one for the whole pack? BUT that's a neat idea. I'm trying to work smarter, not harder, & writing labels is my least fav part. Maybe number the cells with a paint pen & hand out a printed list of what they are?
New Orleans Louisiana here! Started my tomato pepper eggplant and a few herbs last week. My brandywine and black Krim are already sprouting. So exciting!
I am a first time gardener here, and I am learning so much from both of you two ladies(Jess too) as a consumer of plant starts having packs that grow will together or at the same time is a great idea. I love all the extra education from my small town nursery when I go in, so having someone who knows their plants and knows what work together is a bonus. Or just thinking outside the box, a "salsa pack " with peppers and tomatoes or other things like that. Thank you for all your sweet encouragement.
A salsa pack is a great idea! That’s another great thing about buying from local plant sales…the grower can really take some time to educate the buyer. Can’t get that at the big box stores.
I usually start more plants than I need, and then end up giving them away to neighbors. It was very interesting to hear your advice from a sellers perspective!
Hi, guys love the video. I am starting seeds today. Hubby got my shelves and lights up yesterday. I am in Fla. Our growing season is from Feb 13 to Dec 27. So we have a 300-day growing season..The same thing happened to me 2 years ago. they all just wanted red tomatoes like the ones from the store. I was very surprised. I ended up with a yard full of tomato plants. Love the collabration.
I have learn alot from both of you, I appreciate all your tips, advise, and encouragement, I am working on getting my nerve up to try to sale my plant starts!
@@BerkeleyFarms Everyone is encouraging me to just do it! we went to a thrift store to get some cookie sheets to put our soil blocks on and the guy said you ever thought about selling your plants and told us his mom and dad used to in the 60s and made really good money off it back then lol
Maybe it would be a good idea to put pictures of mature fruit from the plant so people can see what it looks like at the market and donate to homeless shelters they often have garden
Pollinator pack is a great idea. My local nursery sold 6-pack Benary’s Giants Zinnias for like $2.99 and it was a hit. I watch another farming channel and apparently those Tiny Tom’s or patio tomatoes are big sellers.
If you’re selling plants, please have recipe cards. The hardest part of wanting to grow plants is knowing what they can do for me or how to use them. Herbs could have recipes they’re used in. That always attracts me!
I hope I can get my hands on a blueberry cherry this year! I heard all about them last year but didn’t get to the sale early enough. I love all the funky one. Sunrise bumblebee was my favorite.

What a fun idea! I may have to steal this one!
I just recently found both your channels and for a couple of days i thought you was the same person. I love both you!
I was gonna do that! Love it. Combo packs.

Saw you on Jill’s channel and decided to come over and subscribe 👍
yay! thank you so much, Gina!
Can you explain how you price out your plant starts.
I did a video recently and talked about that! Check it out here, ua-cam.com/video/UAQSqDDVqJM/v-deo.html
I just came over from Jill's channel. You have so much information to share. Take care.
Thank you so much for heading over here, Gayle! Means the world to us!
When you have your plant sale what do you have your customers carry their plants in after purchasing?
We save up cardboard flats and provide those of customers
When I go to your Amazon wish list it says it can’t find you. When you get a chance maybe you can check and see if you can fix it. Thanks love 😇
So strange. I just clicked the link In the description and it took me right to it.
Thanks you. I will keep trying. Maybe it’s operator error. Lol 😂 I’m sure my teenagers will figure it out for me. I appreciate your time. 💚
Yes! Plant sale talk! This year will (Lord willing) be my second plant sale at our farm!
One thing I know from last year- don't start as many tomatoes- I had a bunch left over. Another thing is people want the plain old red and orange bell peppers.
Oh, yes, also I need to have more zinnias available!
love that you're doing an on-farm plant sale!

Way to go! You're already headed in the right direction and putting a lot of thought into it! I bet it will be a huge success!
ahhh yes! Gotta love all the mini varieties!
Great information thanks ladies👏🏼😊❤😊
Thanks for tuning in!
How do you decide HOW MANY plants to start for a farmer's market? I want to try it out this year but have no clue how many to start

I have sold plants in my front yard for years but I’m planning to have a booth at the county fairgrounds plant sale this year. Excited!
What an awesome opportunity! I bet you’ll do great!
How much does everyone usually sell their plant starts for?
Could you do a video on pricing plant starts?
Hey, Lydia! I did a video and touched on pricing. Check it out here

How do you transport all your plants for the sale? Hundreds of plants? Wow!!
We usually pack our pots into 1020 trays and use a horse trailer to transport.
