I wish that Howard Roberts was alive so that I could, somehow or other, tell him that he’s the greatest jazz guitarist who ever lived. Nobody could ‘out-taste’ Howard!

Yes, he was a great guitarist but unfortunately he ruined most of his recordings with organ.

@@bobburford Agree, Bob… he was phenomenally gifted, his choice of notes perfect and incredibly tasteful, his chops awe-inspiring, and his sidemen were always top shelf, too. A humble genius, Howard.

There is a Julie London where Mr. Roberts was featured in 1958. My parents would play it when we were little ones. I thought Bobby Troup was the guitarist until I figured out last week it was Howard Roberts. There were also things I thought by Wes Montgomery that were Howard Roberts. Thanks for the post. Really grateful.

I had never seen this video, thanks Beth. I graduated GIT in Sept. ‘84, and have to say I still take notes the way HR taught us. His mental energy and creativity were awe inspiring; as an educator and player I’ll always consider him one of the best, and having gotten the opportunity to glimpse into that is something I’ll always treasure. Jeff Berlin is my favorite bassist to this day, and Steve Houghton one of my favorite drummers…this was fantastic.

One reason today jazz is not that popular with young people is because it's not a music that you can really dance to it's not a swinging type music either , now there is one variant of jazz that is played, for instance, the song: the masqerade, a song like that you can dance to, gypsy jazz songs like , All of me, you can dance to, but slow jazz like this guy roberts is playing, takes talent and knowledge to play, the fast speed runs, all those chords in sequence, but once elvis came on the stage and rock and roll, and blues, and hank william country blues hit stage, jazz became imprisoned to its own select clubs that only jazz lovers went to, I'm not down playing jazz, it takes skill and fast moving fingers to play it, Johnny Rosenberg plays it faster than anyone I know, he is my hero Jazz player. My favorite music is blues
