  • St. Simeon the God-Receiver
    (Commemorated on February 3)
Righteous St. Simeon the God-Receiver was, according to the testimony of the holy Evangelist St. Luke, a just and devout man waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. (Luke 2:25)
God promised him that he would not die until the promised Messiah, Christ the Lord, came into the world.
Ancient historians tell us that the Egyptian Pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-247 B.C.) wished to include texts of Holy Scripture in the famous Library at Alexandria. He invited scholars from Jerusalem, and the Sanhedrin sent their wise men.
The Righteous Simeon was one of the 70 scholars who came to Alexandria to translate the Holy Scriptures into Greek. The completed work was called “The Septuagint,” and is the version of the Old Testament used by the Orthodox Church.
Simeon was translating a book of the Prophet Isaiah, and read the words: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
He thought that “virgin” was inaccurate, and he wanted to correct the text to read “woman.” At that moment an angel appeared to him and held back his hand saying, “You shall see these words fulfilled. You shall not die until you behold Christ the Lord born of a pure and spotless Virgin.”
From that day, Simeon lived in expectation of the Promised Messiah. One day, the righteous Elder received a revelation from the Holy Spirit, and came to the Temple. It was on the very day (the 40th after the Birth of Christ) when the All-Pure Virgin Mary and St. Joseph had come to the Temple in order to perform the ritual prescribed by Jewish Law.
When Simeon beheld their arrival, the Holy Spirit revealed to him that the divine Child held by the All-Pure Virgin Mary was the Promised Messiah, the Saviour of the world. The Elder took the Child in his arms and said,
“Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32)
St. Symeon died shortly after that. This righteous Elder St. Simeon is considered to be the Protector of young children.
There is a Christian epigram (Number 46) in “The Greek Anthology” which is addressed to Saint Simeon. It tells the righteous Elder to receive the Child Who was [born (?)] before Adam, and Who will deliver Simeon from this life and bring him to eternal life. A similar idea is expressed in the Aposticha (Slavic use) for the Fore-feast of the Nativity of the Lord (December 24). There the Mother of God refers to her Son as “older than ancient Adam.”
Simeon blessed the All-Pure Virgin and Joseph, and turning to the Mother of God he said, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against. Yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:34-35)
The holy Evangelist continues: “And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband for seven years from her virginity; and she was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not leave the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And coming at that very hour, also gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption at Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36-38)
The holy righteous St. Simeon the God-Receiver died at a great age (Holy Tradition says he was 360). His holy relics were transferred to Constantinople in the 6th century. His grave was seen by the Russian pilgrim St. Anthony, the future Archbishop of Novgorod (October 8) in 1200.
    (Troparion - Tone 4)
“Simeon the Elder is filled with joy today, receiving into his arms the Eternal God as an infant. Begging to be released from the bonds of the flesh he cries: ‘My eyes have seen the salvation, which You have prepared for all the nations to see!’”
    (Kontakion - Tone 3)
“Let the godly pair be praised together: Simeon the Righteous and Anna the Prophetess, well-pleasing to God. They became witnesses of the Incarnate Lord when they saw Him as an infant; together they worshipped Him.”
    (Kontakion - Tone 1)
“Your birth sanctified a Virgin's womb and properly blessed the hands of Symeon. Having now come and saved us O Christ our God, give peace to Your commonwealth in troubled times and strengthen those in authority, whom You love, as only the loving One.”
    St. Simeon, please

Thank you. When i saw the dates for the life of Ptolemy, i wondered if there might be a mistake. The. I learned that tradition says that St. Symeon was 360 years old when he reposed.
    Amazing. Truly amazing.
I wonder if St. Symeon had been aware of the news about what had happened jn Bethlehem 40 days earlier. Surely that news had reached the ears of some in Jerusalem. Although, of course, the Holy Spirit could have informed him of this news had the Holy Spirit, or an angel, have told him.
    Righteous Elder, indeed!
Also, only this morning, i was thinking about St. Luke as he had listened to Mary, the Theotokos, as she told him of events about which only she knew. [Although the Lord and the Holy Spirit and angels could have told him, but what i am thinking of, i believe, probably came from the Theotokos. ]
We marvel at what we read in St. Luke's gospel. Even if these words are 'familiar' to us. But how are we in any way able to relate to what it must have been like for St. Luke to hear these stories from the mouth of the Theotokos? Glory to God!

5:09 Was it the 40th day after the birth of Christ or the 8th ???????

You are mistaking the 8th day which the Lord Jesus was circumcised and the 40th day which was the purification of a woman after childbirth, according to the Law of Moses, (in this case Mary) which required a pair of doves or two young pigeons from the poorer people or a lamb from the rich as the Purification offering. Also see Exodus 13:2; Leviticus 12:1-8; Numbers 18:15-16.

@@HolyOrthodoxy luke 2,21 : « And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord; And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
Luke 2,29: « Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; …. » There is no mistake.

@user-cb9wj6bv3r; Yes, if you notice that Luke 2:21 is on the 8th day the Lord was circumcised and verses 22-40, where they came to the temple of her (Mary Holy Mother of God) purification to present Him on the 40th day. These are two different events.
