Arthur valued Lyons' ideals enough to maintain several of the more progressive ones as of FO4 that the West Coast still hasn't adopted to its detriment, namely its openness in letting outsiders into their ranks and willingness to let civilians unaffiliated with the Brotherhood possess advanced tech for their own benefit... so long as they don't impede or go against the Brotherhood's efforts. He only regressed the other points to fit the Western standards because the West Coast elders managed to impress their values on him hard enough after effectively forcing him to lead the East Coast -- he was fifteen at the time of being elected Elder of the chapter following the deaths of Owen and Sarah, and it seems to me that they sought to use him as a puppet in order to regain influence over the now-dominated D.C. area.
The fact Arthur managed to effectively turn the tables on the Council of Elder's intentions and now borderline supersedes them in influence of the Brotherhood of Steel as a whole through strength of character and (seeming) merit opens up a whole can of worms if he's still alive in the lore post-game.

@@DT-267K Based on what we've seen in the Fallout TV show - which is set in 2296/2297 - it appears that the Eastcoast Chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel are the new seat of power for the order as a whole over their Westcoast counterparts now. From them getting orders from the Commonwealth Chapter's Clerics, to even being supplied with new suits of T60 Power Armor and Vertibirds via Airships.

I’m pretty sure it’s implied there was actually a decrease/decline in power sometime after the end of 3, that Maxson actually managed to pull them out of thanks to his winning over of the west coast leadership AND bringing the Outcasts back.
We see signs of this from an encounter after you complete the main story in 3. You see an argument between wastelanders and BoS forces outside of Megaton. The wastelanders desperately need water for their town, but the orders are to allocate it elsewhere. The encounter explodes into violence and BoS forces massacre them.
This displays that although noble, Lyons altruism was also his chapter’s downfall. It’s really hard to be in charge of distributing such a vital resource as purified water, ESPECIALLY when you’re doing it for nothing in return. It’s a drain on resources and you can’t actually make the whole population happy, there are going to be winners and losers.

I find it incredibly ironic that the brotherhood is protecting the commonwealth far more than the railroad do by their extermination efforts against feral ghouls, super mutants, and raiders while the railroad is perfectly content with their fellow man having to struggle with the poverty of a post-nuclear wasteland. I remember talking to Des in my very first playthrough on ps4 and she made it like the average waste lander is unworthy of their help. Lady, you live in a post apocalypses where they're radiation is in every body of water with cutthroats who pillage and murder, and you do nothing about it!

It's not really that ironic when someone does a better job at something you aren't even doing and don't really care about to begin with.
The Railroad isn't interested in protecting the Commonwealth, just Synths. Any "protecting the Commonwealth" they do is just to further that goal of shipping Synths somewhere they view as safe and since they're known to ship them _out_ of the commonwealth, all they really care about is a safe passage somewhere else.

I agree with most of what you said.
The Brotherhood is the most effective and enjoyable faction, and an alliance with the minutemen would be awesome!
But I think there could be potential issues between the two factions, namely: what happens after the war.
To be perfectly honest, gameplay wise this isn't an issue at all since it is easy to still be the General of the Minutemen and a member of the brotherhood at the same time.
But if we take a look at what they want to accomplish for the Commonwealth is where (lorewise) problems may start to pop up.
The Minutemen want to establish settlements and protect them so they can build to the point that oneday the many settlements could come together to form a new Government.
As far as I can tell though, The Brotherhood already see themselves as that Government, as seen when they tax the farmers of their crops.
They maybe the most effective military force, but as far as I can tell, they have no experience in being a government, and I have doubts that Maxion will bend the knee to the Government that the people setup.
That is where I see problems arising with a Minutemen and Brotherhood alliance.

It's made abundantly clear that the requisitioning of crops from local settlements is an act performed under the table on behalf of Proctor Teagan, and not one condoned by anyone else in the order. The Brotherhood imports the bulk of their rations from the Capital Wasteland and scrounges from Commonwealth areas identified as potentially favorable zones in a style similar to how they look for idle tech to scavenge and plunder, and the rest is procured from caravans for caps. Teagan only wants to make sure that the Brotherhood's reserves remain as peak and plump as possible.
Besides, Teagan tells you to procure the crops 'by any means necessary' -- persuasion to donate for free, coercion or outright violence are the cheap, desperate or final resorts to fulfill that mission in my book. If you want to pay the established price of a thousand (or 500 if you pass a speech check) caps to the farmers -- honest pay for their honest goods -- then it's an option you can follow in-game.

Morality matters less in the context of Fallout 4: it's a wasteland populated by raiders and cultists. The two primary concerns with deciding on a faction should be: 1) Will they survive the events of the game? 2) Will they improve the quality of life in the Commonwealth? The Railroad has no purpose after the Institute is destroyed, they'll settle down with their perpetually young synth harem. The Minutemen, according to the Institute quest "Pinned", is just a militia. The General has no authority, despite being the unifying factor. Once the Sole Survivor is dead, the Minutemen will collapse just like they did before the events of Fallout 4. The only groups which will survive long-term, assuming that they are the chosen faction, are the Brotherhood and the Institute. The last few quests with the Institute involve creating energy independence for the Institute and sending a message to the Commonwealth to stay out of their way. No mention of improving the overworld, but rather they continue to send synths up to cause trouble. The Brotherhood, however, has a vested interest in staying in the Commonwealth and improving it. Even if they don't establish civilization, they're sticking around to wipe out the dangers of the feral ghouls and super mutants, which will make life much easier for the wastelanders.

    2. Yes the Brotherhood should have stayed true to Lyons' ways and worked together with the Minutemen.
    3. They should also try to buy tech from people. Set up centers where people can come by and try to sell tech they have (or found) to the Brotherhood for caps.
    4. The Brotherhood's Scribes should try to set up some purifiers and give out water like in the Capital Wasteland. Also get some farms up and running (hire locals to run them).

But trying to ignore all of that, it is ironic that the brotherhood which was founded after us common soldiers witnessing the terrors of the US government during the Great War would end up fighting that same government in the form of The enclave.
There's a lot of other ironies to explore with them versus the NCR because the NCR is keeping up the old world ideologies and also the irony of them becoming basically The enclave in fallout 4 for the purposes of wiping out the institute but just the fact that the brotherhoods initial idea was to rebel against the US government and then they end up fighting The enclave who are the successors of the US government is very interesting

The Institute had a whole hydroponics lab in which food was produced on mass, they had a research lab and researchers that could develop new tech and weapons for the steel boys in armor, and even the FEV lab could have been a potential lab to see if theres any counters to muties, maybe something made to affect those with FEV or something made that kills the mutants easier. Theres alot of potential that isn't exploited, part of the reason, oddly enough, that i love the modded ending mod, that lets you do it yourself.

To add to your comments about the BoS' complaints towards the Lyons Era, I think a good balance for them would be for them to follow a far more diplomatic approach with the outside world as you suggested with groups like the Minutemen.
The Westcoast BoS failed mostly due to how isolated they were. They refused to communicate with their neighbours, where by the time the NCR started getting to big for their leaders to trust them it was far to late. The Brotherhood's history in that region would've and could've gone down a far better path if they bothered expanding relationships with nation-building factions like the NCR or Minutemen.
A bit of community outreach can do a LOT of good for your organization in the long run. Maxson's decision in hunting and killing mutated lifeforms like Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls, Deathclaws, Rouge War Robots, etc, is a fantastic first step. I'm glad he decided to keep those kind of reforms Lyons pushed as such missions keeps the Brotherhood active in ways that their Westcoast Chapters weren't.
And by cleaning up violent wildlife like they do with these mutants, it gives nation-building factions like the Minutemen much more breathing room to focus on developing the settlements and trade routes they police and build-up.
If anything I can see something like this going on in the Capital Wasteland in some form. Whilst Maxson may have pulled the BoS away from the frontlines when it came to communicating with outsider communities, nothing could've stopped him and the BoS from setting up a middle-man group of somesort who could take-up protecting the Capital Wasteland's safe zones the way the Minutemen do.
As much as I loved Elder Lyons, I can understand the BoS' reservations towards his leadership. Given the casualties they suffered during their wars with the Enclave and Vault 87 Super Mutants, the BoS couldn't pick-up the bill on protecting the Capital Wasteland by themselves forever.

Then once you get far enough into their quests you could even find minute men squads at the other two sites if you checked in....or maybe a scattering of minute man bodies.... Combine that with time limits on specific quests and maybe more mission variety like freeing captive farmers from raiders or maybe super mutants.

Majority of the synths they "rescued" took on the role of raider or something worse. and I took out the institute without touching the brotherhood in any kind of way just by killing Shaun inside the institute. I led my minutemen to victory on that playthrough but I'll always have strong love and respect for the b.o.s and the minutemen. I rather go into battle with either one on my side. how I see it the minutemen is specialized in stealth and tactics. The b.o.s is specialized in combat and tactics.

I exclusively play Minutemen because I find the other factions either cartoonishly evil, self-destructively stupid or, in the case of the Brotherhood, not nearly as pure as they make their intentions sound. Synth or no, turning on Danse is not okay. Acting like Raiders to bully the Commonwealth civilians out of their hard-grown food is not okay. And I'm certain that if the Brotherhood had their way, there wouldn't be any Pre-War medical tech left when people actually need it. They certainly have a lot of upsides, but they only "help" in the broad strokes of killing everything that isn't sufficiently human in their eyes. Acting a little too much like the Enclave for my liking. The Minutemen have a *lot* of flaws, but at least they truly care about the people of the wasteland, first and foremost.

  • @uni4rm
    @uni4rm 2 роки тому

The fact that the missions and such are the best with the BoS doesn't make them a good faction, it just means Bethesda sucks at developing factions because they really put all the effort into the BoS. If they had put any effort into the Minutemen the entire system wouldn't have evolved around Preston, if they had put more effort into the Institute, you would be able to actually direct it your way. The railroad? Well, that faction shouldn't even exist. The fact that the Fallout series is basically a power fantasy jackoff session from Bethesda imagining themselves as "Knights" riding to the rescue, especially in both Fallout 3 and 4 its easy to see where they put all their efforts, design and writing, and to me, thats too bad. Because if they had put the same effort into the other factions as they did into the BoS, Fallout 4 would have been even more amazing.

I didn't know feudalist was a buzz word. Because yeah, Arthur Maxson's Brotherhood is a feudalistic tech cult, and whether Arthur actually does care about the locals, it's clear in both action and conduct that--with the exception of Danse--his higher-ranking subordinates don't.
Also, their anti-fraternization policy extends to their own people as well; so they can't recruit new members, and they can't breed new members into existence. Which means that if these policies are maintained, then the generation of squires you see in the game are going to be the last generation of the Brotherhood. At least that chapter of the Brotherhood. Yeah, for all his charisma, Arthur is also just plainly a fucking moron. Lyons had a million times the wits of Arthur; he's really High Elder because the Western Brotherhood wants to exert more control over the East, and he's impressionable.

He's 20 and on campaign, if anything, banning fraternisation is a sign of remarkable competence. It avoids a host of discipline, health, PR and logistical problems. Discipline and PR you can probably imagine. Health isn't just the obvious issues of disease, but also the simple fact that if a female BoS member (even a scribe) gets pregnant she's functionally a casualty as far as front line duty goes for months at minimum and more likely years if you care about preventing psychological issues in future squires.
As for logistics, if Brotherhood soldiers start marrying locals and thus generating a horde of camp followers, that's more mouths to feed and more people to protect at home base. Not to mention ship back if things go wrong.
There's plenty of time once the Institute is dealt with and the war functionally over for the ban to be lifted and a peacetime stance to re-assert itself.

the brotherhood will be in Australia next game just you watch.
meanwhile the "chains that bind" or simple chain of command is important to not have overriding orders from your direct superior to whom you or your formation has been assigned casually overridden by another of the same rank outside of the formation.
imagine troops in Syria under one man's command being overridden and commanded by a commander of the same rank outside of their command structure way over in Japan... why would that ever be the case?
when killed the command would shift to the next in command in that formation. if anyone could override anyone nothing would get done and with the recent childish brotherhood taken into account they would just toggle their receivers off.
this is important to functioning military tactics otherwise a desperate knight can effectively commandeer another knight's soldiers... no matter what they were doing before even if that was a defensive action to repel enemies from an area or chokepoint or basic logistical duties... where's the limit on the dumb they would permit?
a reductive example is not a good trick when the example is that poor, this isn't another NCO's problem and if want to make it theirs they need to go complain to the "not subordinate" in question's Paladin... who will tell you to get bent... as intended.
you then misunderstand the chain of command again; the paladin would speak to a paladin.... who can directly address those under his command... including the subordinate in question..... come on now,..
simp for Lyons if you want but don't use poor examples if you'd please.
NOOOOO you then say their leadership is good; they couldn't stop a drunkenly flown vertibird from landing; never verified identities and got destroyed; or got lasered and destroyed; or got artillery'd and destroyed. they were born of trained military; they themselves are fools in power armor.

I bring up the chains that bind because of it's weird application in New Vegas. as it's just randomly used to oust an elder. And the way they use it implies that any order given out of the direct chain can lead to not just punishment but demotion. The bigger issue is that the brotherhood was incredibly selective in its enforcement. I don't have any real issue with an actual chain of command. Just the brotherhoods previous draconian enforcement of its violation. But if you find my example used in video to simplified I understand.

additionally using your example all the Elder need do is speak to their commander; or even easier phrase it as a request or insult, "please clean you uniform" "have some class".
turns out in the military you can be demoted for petty bs too.
been a while since Vegas but:
as an elder a squire is hardly your concern; discard that rank...
now discard the post Vegas ranks because those don't exist....
now discard your immediate underlings because you have free reign on them....
now... how much was left for the Elder to snipe with his breaking of command? not much without going outside the bunker.

    • @ShishouDzukiZaManako
      @ShishouDzukiZaManako 3 місяці тому

additionally there is a reason this command structure is used in real life: those in direct command should best know how punish infractions under their direct command and have the most information immediately present for said situation.
why have the general reprimand the private.... you wouldn't.... i hope not at least.
in the field no battalion commander would want; say a major/division leader reorganizing their command and say...
repositioning their artillery battery over their.... pointed in the opposite direction. depriving them of what is basically a company's worth of command by usurping them and leaving them to death.
granted the officer might not even be present and you'd likely just be wiping out like 2-5 companies of guys out of hubris.... if only there were a chain of com OMG get the next in line. now the Division commander COULD have contacted the BATTALION COMMANDER or their stand-in; who could have TOLD him they were heavily engaged, and if pushed would have to order their men accordingly... the Division commander could wait; they could force their orders, but bypassing their subordinates and messing with their commands known elements under their nose in the field? no.
BUT THE COMMANDER WOULD KNOW; you are arguing that is a bad thing, that they should be casually superseded and left out of key information like what their subordinates are doing or where they even are... because that is what the chain of command was for... and they removed it... and yet you think they are organized.
that is simplicity incarnate... just imagine all the shenanigans the removal would introduce. that same doctrine that prevented out of chain orders also hard bound its adherents to fulfill orders. unless redefined they don't even have to do that anymore.
the faction is increasingly a joke and yet we are being told they are thriving... because the writers write what they know. which is consequence free hackery.

I don't know, the fact that Maxson dogmatically tries to have his most loyal solider eradicated for something he had no control over puts a pretty big stain on the moral stance of the Brotherhood. It also kind of seems like you shit on the Railroad a lot mostly because you don't like the characters and because they don't give you the coolest stuff. They're also not a massive military organization that has existed since the Pre-War era that spans the entire country. They're a local group that tries to operate in a region full of people who are bigoted against synths that is also heavily monitored by the Institute. “I don't know, the fact that Maxson dogmatically tries to have his most loyal soldier eradicated for something he had no control over puts a pretty big stain on the moral stance of the Brotherhood.”
I can see why you might think that but let's look at it in another light. Danse wasn’t the brotherhood’s most loyal soldier because he chose to be, he was programmed to be. Danse being a synth meant that at any moment with the right phrase Danse could be overwritten due to the component in his brain. Knowing that it would seem like Danse is obviously compromised and realistically can’t be trusted lest you run into an order 66 scenario. That being said, I would say Maxson’s willingness to look the other way with the right line of reasoning shows a degree of mercy and perhaps the possibility of future improvement. But I understand where you are coming from.
“ It also kind of seems like you shit on the Railroad a lot mostly because you don't like the characters and because they don't give you the coolest stuff.”
Those are part of the reasons why I don’t like them, but I also made a whole video going into them where I explain that my biggest issue is the railroads priorities. But if a faction doesn’t have likable characters and offers lackluster rewards, why would I pick them over a faction which has more likable characters and better rewards?
“They're also not a massive military organization that has existed since the Pre-War era that spans the entire country.”
I know and they still irritate me and are terrible at their job and I find their morals to be wildly misplaced. I don’t need the faction to be a pre-war military power, heck I think the minutemen are fun and they’re weaker than the railroad starting out.
“They're a local group that tries to operate in a region full of people who are bigoted against synths that is also heavily monitored by the Institute.”
That doesn’t save them. Their whole mission is still a giant waste of resources. Yay saved a couple of synths from slavery and now they can enjoy the horrors of the wasteland with no help from the railroad. While all of this has been going on the commonwealth is still being harassed by raiders, Super mutants, irradiated wildlife, killer robots, and synths trying to replace your loved ones in the dead of night. Hmm maybe there is a reason why the people of the commonwealth are bigoted against the synths.
“None of the factions are perfect,”
      Amen Brother.
“but you're clearly biased toward the Brotherhood because they just seem cooler.”
It actually depends more on how they are written. I’m not that big a fan of them in New Vegas because I find them stupid.
“If the Enclave let you join them and they gave you enough cool stuff, you'd probably find reasons to support them too.”
I think that would depend more on the writing of the Enclave because if I could’ve joined them in 3, I still would have killed them based on how they were written.

Not necessarily stealth attacks are still a thing plus they could set up a proxy organization that helps people on the surface while the aiding synth thing is still under cover. Also, the railroad has little secrecy left; they are typically easily found and their steps for secrecy typically gets them nowhere.
“I think it was poor writing that Bethesda tried to set up them as a major faction on the level of the BoS or Institute,”
      I wholeheartedly agree with you.
“But they’re an organization largely formed by synths for synths,”
It was actually formed by humans and is mostly run by humans. If the railroad was born out of an exclusive synths club I’d forgive more of their nonsense.
“They don’t have the resources to solve every other problem in the wasteland.”
True but they do have far more resources than any other faction at the start of the game minus the institute. They could be doing more, Deacon himself laments on how Desdemona doesn’t green light more ops to help regular people as he says, “A little goes a long way.” I don’t expect them to solve every issue, but they could try to do something. After all, if they are going to jump over every hurdle to free synths it would be nice if they would have a safe place to escape too.
“and they’re the only group interested in trying to help synths instead of killing them or enslaving them.”
The minutemen are not hostile to the synths. Be that as it may they may have a noble goal, but they try and achieve that goal poorly wasting much to achieve very little. While the commonwealth still suffers, and they have the power to do something about it. Admittedly not everything but still something.
Also, uh, not a good look to say, “well maybe the bigots have a point”.
Seriously, that's the argument you're going to end on. Yes, let's divorce the context from my argument … that will show me. Let's break down why people in the commonwealth fear the synths. The synths by in large are agents of the institute programmed for various missions and tasks. Many of those missions and tasks are to kill someone and replace them. The possibility that a synth may try to come and kill a citizen of the commonwealth is very real, so please forgive the average Joe for not trusting the science experiment from the organization that sends out killer robots on the regular. Until the institute is stopped and is no longer in control of synths it is silly to dismiss the Commonwealth's fears as mere bigotry. It's not a good look.

@@legatelark6375 i think fearing synths is justifiable, but then you have people abducting and torturing suspected synths like in Covenant. In some cases the fear goes too far. But to step back a bit, I think the source of this argument still stems from Bethesda’s bad writing. Of course the BoS would be more fleshed out and coherent since they’re the literal posterboy faction preferred by Bethesda. The Institute doesn’t make a lot of sense the way it operated, and there’s a recent video by RadKing that goes into how Father has made everything about them worse. As an extension of the Institute’s bad writing, that affects the Railroad too. I do tend to have a bit of a negative impression any time media has a group of people that are seen as inherently untrustworthy due to factors beyond their control and viewers , but I don’t think a company like Bethesda has the chops to ever handle that kind of discussion gracefully. A metal sword would be "advanced technology" for a Neolithic society. So instead of focusing on ethics and reason they blame the scary ill defined tech. This combined with a dwindling low set of genetics means that the BOS is a doomed organization and even in game some of the elders recognize this.
