      That's total bullshit this guy would be more than capable of running modern up to date equipment. If he had a lathe AND a mill, he could be producing precise and accurae parts en masse. In fact at the end they show the whole shop which does have some real equipment.

    This guy must work in the country's aerospace division. He has a micrometer and a dial indicator in a shop with a concrete floor. The work benches are only given to the atomic research division . Why didn't he use the dial indicator instead of the wire to align the part in the tool post ?

    • @5tr41ghtGuy
      @5tr41ghtGuy Рік тому

      After watching several lathe videos where a wire is used for measuring runout, I tried it myself. You'd be surprised how close you can get with sharp pointed wire - probably within +/-.001" if your eyesight is good. Also, when you crash the wire into the part, no big loss. This technique is now my goto when chucking long work pieces, especially if they have a rough surface.

    • @russellhopper6925
      @russellhopper6925 Рік тому

      @@5tr41ghtGuy sorry, even with eyesight like a hawk you couldn't get it within. 010" if the wire touches on the part it would have more than. 010" of deflection before you could even tell , and there is nobody that has eyesight good enough to see .010 " runout from more than a couple of inches away and using a magnifying glass . I guess that's why the dial indicator and micrometer were invented. Use a large tip on your dial indicator when checking parts with rough surfaces . That's why the dial indicator has screw on tips .

    • @5tr41ghtGuy
      @5tr41ghtGuy Рік тому +1

      @@russellhopper6925 the whole point is that the wire doesn't touch the part; rather, as the tip of the sharpened wire approaches the surface of the part, the way light responds exaggerates the gap. A similar thing happens when you place a straight edge across a flat part, and hold it up to a bright light to check the uniformity of the gap.
      For the lathe I use a sharpened brazing rod myself, and I've made a simple block to hold the rod in my toolpost. As a round workpiece approaches concentric about the lathe's spin axis, I move the cross slide in so the tip gets closer to the surface.
      On another note, if you can't see .001" runout by watching the end of a faced round part while it spins on the lathe, you need go get your eyes checked.

    • @russellhopper6925
      @russellhopper6925 Рік тому +1

      @@5tr41ghtGuy I guess you didn't really read my message. My eyes are fine . As for the straight edge technique, it doesn't do anything to the light until you get close to .001" of an inch , then the light will turn a bluish color as it starts to eliminate all the other waves of color and blue is the only wave length that comes through the gap . I guess if it works for you, continue on .I'll stick with the accurate metrology tools for a better outcome .

    This right here is why America is DOOMED..... They have about $2.75 (USD) of material involved and pay this guy probably $12.00 A DAY (USD). Here it would have cost $400.00 to make this part. There it cost them $3.00. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

      I think that the bigger problems are 1st that we have convinced ourselves that this is not even possible without a CNC machine; and second that even with appropriate safety equipment a lot of this might not even be possible for a business in many states because of liability and regulations
