From the MLB website: If weather causes a game to be cut short before it is official, it will be continued at a later date from the point of the stoppage. A game is considered a official game once the visiting team has made 15 outs (five innings) and the home team is leading, or once the home team has made 15 outs regardless of score. If a game is tied after becoming official, it will be completed at a later date. But if weather causes a game to be cut short after it is official and the game isn’t tied, the results will stand

Hi Kabir... the grounds crew putting the tarp on the field DOES NOT have to stand there and hold the tarp during a storm. In these clips, they are only holding the tarp hoping the wind will die down enough so then can get it on the ground and keep air from getting under it. Those tarps weigh close to 1,000 lbs, their own weight usually will hold them down. That is why you see so many people holding on to them, because of the weight. The problem is when wind gets under it, the amount of fabric catching air is like a giant sail or kite, and will pick those guys up and throw them like rag dolls. Lots of ground crew members over the years have been hurt by either getting slammed down by the tarp, or getting caught inside of it when the wind blows it over top of them in stormy conditions. They try to get the tarp on the field as early as possible if bad weather is coming to try and get it down before the wind hits. They can stake the tarp to the ground also (much like a tent) but most of the time the tarp's own weight is sufficient to hold it down on top of the diamond to keep it dry.

Back in the day I was in the concert biz, production. We had field tarps to cover stadium fields. We transported them on a 40' tractor trailer. They were rolled up on steel culvert drainage pipe. They were huge, weighed about what you said each, if not more. They were designed to protect against burns. If the wind got under one you better let go, it could take you with it. We duck taped all the seams that had about about 3' over lap. After a show, if we had time, we'd use 2.5" fire hoses to wash them off. That'd take up to 5 people per hose. One on the nozzle the rest to drag the hose around. The total number of crew to put them down/up was around 20 - 25 people and a forklift. At the time there were only 2 promoters in the country that had these things. Us & one other.

10:30 That hook suggestion will never happen. They must seriously consider player safety and in order for the hook to work it would need to be anchored down into something hard and heavy like ement or metal. And you just cant have something like that on the field when you have players running, jumping, and sliding all over the field.

Baseball is a lot more likely to be called off for rain than football. A wet baseball can easily slip out of a pitcher's hand incorrectly and hit a batter, and similarly a ball in the rain or snow can be incredibly hard for batters and fielders to track down. Add in the grass getting too slick and the infield dirt becoming muddy slop, and most games after a certain threshold of rain get postponed or paused. As opposed to football's primordial nature, baseball is often said to be a game of inches, and heavy moisture/winds can really mess that up. It's why quite a few fields (T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Globe Life Park in Arlington/Dallas, loanDepot Park in Miami, Chase Field in Phoenix, Minute Maid Park in Houston, Rogers Centre in Toronto, American Family Field in Milwaukee) have retractable roofs to manage this threat.

Rain, even heavy rain and wind, doesn't necessarily cancel a game. They put the tarp on the infield and can wait a couple of hours or more to restart the game. If they know there is a break in the rain coming, they'll often wait. If the weather report says that the rain will continue all day or all evening, they will stop the game and continue it the next day or whenever. Some fans will leave during a rain delay, but most fans stick around if it's an afternoon game and they think it will resume. They go up under the stadium overhang if there is one, or they go inside the corridors of the stadium. The teams often try to entertain the fans with music or videos on the big screen during the rain delay.

We have been at Phillies games where it has been 32 degrees and snowing (great for the stores at Citizen's Park - we bought blankets!) and also Phillies games where it has been so hot you couldn't sit on your seat without feeling burned. My husband and his kids are huge Yankees fans and sat through a 6-hour rain delay, only to come home (a 3-hour drive) to find that they did play the game when the pouring rain stopped. I don't want ANY retractable roofs in sports in the US. It's part of the experience, and it wouldn't be the same. Weather is what it is in the US -- we never know what will happen. You need to respond to the earthquake at the Dodgers game. We have rain, snow, and sleet here on the east coast, but an earthquake or hurricane rarely happens.

Some newer stadiums do have a hook and pulley system to unwind the tarp. They line it up and then unroll the tarp with a riding mower or golf cart. But most stadiums were built long ago and aren't designed for that kind of thing.
As for WHY they tarp the field: it prevents the field from becoming soggy. Baseball stadiums still use real grass as opposed to the artificial turf in the NFL. It makes for a softer landing when diving for balls and is cheaper to maintain, but is prone to weather fouling. The NFL went to artificial so they can constantly change the logos by removing sections of the field. It allows them to host collegiate and high school games by changing the hashes easily and you don't waste time having to mow.

When the weather turns bad, fans will usually retreat to a sheltered area. Umpires can call a halt to the game, and different things will happen depending on circumstances. They can re-start the game when the weather has cleared, they can complete the game at a later date, they can declare the game finished if one team is ahead and at least five innings have been played, or they can play the game from the beginning at a later date.
Some ballparks do have retractable roofs. They're most common in places where it rains a lot in summer. Baseball is different from football in that it can't be played in bad weather, so it makes more sense to have a roof in that sport than it does in football.

  • @SpikePapp
    @SpikePapp 2 роки тому

The status of a game is usually at the umpire's discretion. Normally even a little bit of rain stops the game for safety reasons. Rain can make the bases slippery, the bat becomes harder to grip, and if its bad enough, can make the infield unplayable. What happens after that depends. They can resume play when the rain stops, suspend play to a later date, or if 5 innings have been played, they end the game right there and count it as an official game.
As to domes, there are a few in MLB. The main issue is they are expensive to build. Texas recently built one and it cost $1 billion.

Baseball games get delayed/postponed by far the quickest of the major sports. Largely speaking baseball does not play in rain. If there's even a threat of rain sometimes they will postpone the game before it even starts. If bad weather hits while play is going on - for example the crazy snow in the Pirates-Cubs game - they will try to play through it for as long as they can until conditions become unsafe. The "crew chief" (the top umpire among the group) is in constant contact with the stadium's head groundskeeper to stay updated on the radar and how long bad weather is going to last. The crew chief makes the decision on when to stop the game and get the tarp out.

They have weather watchers....if it's a quick rain storm, or cell...they keep playing. They do have "rain delays" until the storm passes. That's when fans have more drinks and food!! Lol If it is canceled, they simply postpone it....and pick up where they left off at a later date. Being a HUGE St. Louis Cardinals fan, I would wear a poncho, go to the sheltered places and keep watching as long as they play. The sirens are Tornado WARNINGS....which means rotation is in the air and it could touch down. We have them all over in Tennessee, both rural and cities.

  • @danbaker300

MLB is more similar to cricket than the NFL in terms of what weather will stop play. They'll play through light rain occasionally, but heavy rain will cause a delay. Not a good idea to have a hitter facing a ball thrown at 100 mph in wet, low-visibility conditions.
For short delays, the game will usually be resumed and still played in full. If the game can't be resumed that day, there are two possibilities:
    1) If at least 5 innings are finished, the game is considered complete as long as either the home team (who bats second) is leading, or the visiting team was leading at the end of the last complete inning and the game is not tied. This also applies if the home team is leading and the game is called in the bottom of the 5th.
    2) If none of those conditions apply, the game will be resumed from the point of interruption prior to the next game between those teams in that stadium (or in the other stadium if there are none).
10:30 - they do tie it down, but you have to get the tarp out there in the first place, which is the part you're seeing.

Even in indoor stadiums. I think it's a law. But typically the minimum delay for lightning is 30 minutes from the most recent strike within like a 7 mile radius. That's how it is in Nascar.

They would either have to build a roof and an enclosed area around the stadium or they would have to build a brand new stadium.

Kabir, looks as if others have given a good explanation as to what happens at a Major League Baseball game when weather delays or postpones a game. Since a season in MLB is 162 games, there aren't many off days to make up games, so they will try to wait it out and finish the game. I've watched games on tv that began at 7 pm, had a 2-4 hour weather delay, then were resumed and finished at 1 or 2 am. The fans usually congregate in the concourse areas where the conession stands are until the weather clears up. The one scene of people running on the sidewalk with it just pouring rain was in Chicago, and is indicative of the kind of rainstorms we can have here in the Midwestern U.S. (I also live in Illinois, but am 230 miles/370km southwest of Chicago). By the way, speaking of the MLB 162-game schedule, I watch EVERY game my beloved St. Louis Cardinals play, as all are televised.

Lightning will pause a game. Severe weather, wind, rain etc will most likely pause a game. Once it gets wet enough that the pitcher firing 100MPH hard balls in can't control the ball... Game Paused for a bit, then if it doesn't calm down in a reasonable time it can be stopped and or rescheduled. If it is past a certain point with one team in the lead, then they will award the game to the leading team.

By it's nature, baseball is not very conducive to being played in wet conditions, be it snow or rain. Most infields are made of a clay compound and when clay becomes soaked it is very slippery. The bases, pitcher's rubber, and home plate also become very slick when wet. The ball will quickly become soaked when a ground ball is hit and the grass is wet, making it hard to control when thrown. The league does not like to have games cancelled. It can create a headache in trying to reschedule a game. The teams and their ground crew will go to great lengths to avoid a game being cancelled. There have been rain delays of up to 3 hours in hopes that the rain will stop. The home plate umpire will be in contact with the weather service to get updates on whether a storm will pass or not. Before the plate umpired deems the game unplayable because of weather he must wait at least 30 minutes, by rule, after having suspended play.

The one huge storm with fans outside of the stadium and a siren going off, that's a tornado siren. They should have gone inside the stadium immediately and gone to restrooms which are typically designated tornado shelters in stadiums as they are surrounded by many tons of reinforced concrete and steel.
I worked for the police at a major university in Tornado Alley in my twenties, so I've been in a patrol car using the loudspeaker to direct the last ignorant people off the streets and into nearby shelter locations on campus like the lower level of a parking garage, an academic building with a basement or certain areas withing the football stadium. Our basketball arena also had safe areas, but due to it's location distant from the academic areas and the fact that basketball season doesn't overlap much with the severe storm season.
BTW. The Rangers stadium with the tornado directly over the field on the video is the Texas Rangers whose stadium is located in Arlington between the larger cities of Dallas and Ft. Worth. While American Football can become more entertaining with heavy rain or snow, baseball just becomes unwatchable and unplayable. Baseball catches a lot of ridicule from some Americans because they won’t play in such conditions but those people are ignorant of the mechanics of the game.

I would NOT be in favor of it.... but not because of toughness or anything... I don't trust them to be safe about it. I think that at least one of the stadiums will cut corners or not do proper upkeep and people will be in danger

retractable roofs are too low and the ones that have them hit the ball on the ceilings.

The problem is with the roof balls hit it hard and destroy equipment up there. Japan has those roofs on stadiums and it proved not a good idea as cameras kept getting destroyed the roof gets holes and stuff just kept happening. The Japanese league had enough and left them open for ball games while shutting them for other events as needed wrestling shows are automatic shut roof as they don’t need it, concerts are by request, depending on sport they can ask for it. There is a reason our stadiums tend to be open.

I really think they extended MLB baseball way too long into fall season, it should stop in mid September.

The reason the NFL Lambeau Field will never be a dome is because not even God can get season tickets.
If it was a dome the All Mighty couldn't watch the game.
