    Point of this story - if you don’t touch that nut, you’ll be fine!
    If you did touch it, you have to line it up properly.
    And I know I mislabeled a jet for a needle. You get the point...

    If you look there is a very shallow stud sticking out in the carburetor and it indexes on the flat spot on the sleeve.

    Thank you for posting this video. I had my carbs off my bike for a rebuild and had already had them back together but not installed on the bike when I found and viewed this video. So I went out to my shop and examined the carbs and sure enough I had made the same mistake. Thank goodness I hadn’t already had them back on the bike and tried to run it. Saved me a nightmare and a great deal of work. Can’t thank you enough.

    Brotha is a life saver! This was the problem on a 2000 xvs650. Idles and revs but when under load didn't want to move, throttle response was everywhere. When they cleaned the carb they put this part in backwards hole was facing the wall not the jets. Runs like a bat out of hell now, night and day difference

    Dave, just picked up a 2005 VStar 650 that didn't run very good. Idled well, but the first little extra throttle and it was good night!! Found your video, pulled off the air box and you could already see that this was the issue. Yanked the carbs off, re-seated that sleeve, and its running like new. Thanks for posting this - saved me and others a lot of time!!

    The carb body have a pin that force correct insertion, look around the sides where you tread the brass screw and you will find it, is facing the flat end of the part.... ****be extremely careful*** with the brass screw, ethanol eat it up and can break if you tighten it too much ... it happened to me and Yamaha part is costly and difficult to find, ebay have the screw for 25.00 bucks !!!

    Well I finally got to working on this again. I found the issue with that hole not lining up so I was sure this would fix it. Just put it all back together and was a beast to get started. Finally nursed it with some starting fluid to get a steady idle. Ran it down the road and it's exactly like it was before. I've adjusted the carb sync screw all over the place. I don't have a carb sync gauge set. I tried the little homemade hose and oil trick but that doesn't work very good for me. I'm lost as to what it could be. Still has zero power when I get to 3rd gear.

      Is this rejetted? What position is the clip in? I am thinking this is a rich/lean condition. My guess - only a guess - is that you are very lean. Running it cold with choke makes it richer, but then with the extra air at speed, you are too lean. Look at www.650ccnd.com/rejet.htm and www.650ccnd.com/jetchrt.htm and www.650ccnd.com/perf.htm and www.650ccnd.com/trblshtcrb.htm

    i believe there is very small metering orifices within the jets, a small wire will get thru but nothing bigger than that. if you look close at it they look like six pointed snowflakes in the jets

    I am getting tank rust and black chips into my gas filter. I think this is the reason my 650 stalled on the highway and will not run. The bike was stored in a garage for six years and I had my Carb Rebuild a few months ago. But I think ir is all clogged up now. I think it may be better to buy a new Carb and Gas Tank.

    That is the needle jet I had to replace both of those in my 03 650 classic . I have everything on the bike now and it’s idling ok but when I open up the throttle when I’m riding the bike it dies . I’m wondering if this is causing it . They are slotted on my carbs and only go in one way so idk .. I’d be really annoyed if I have to take everything off again I’ve had to do it a few times for different reasons now starting to lose it

    • @daveqlockard
      @daveqlockard  3 роки тому

      Sounds just like my tale. Except I could even get half throttle. If this is your issue, I would guess that yours was at a closer position to allow some fuel metering than mine. Sure wish I took a before vid. Good luck.

    Which way does the hole point visibly forward?

    • @daveqlockard
      @daveqlockard  2 роки тому

      the hole lines up towards the nut. You should be able to feed a wire through the 'nut' all the way through the hole in that metering sleeve. Sorry, im using all the wrong terms here.

  • @philspaseo2377

    Do you need to remove the whole carb to align it correctly?

    • @daveqlockard
      @daveqlockard  2 роки тому

      No - all this can be done from the bowl area only. By sliding a wire in the main jet emulsion tube, you can index that part properly.

    I am in the process of fixing a Vstar 650 for a friend. Carb was yuck. Took it all apart and cleaned it. I do remember having that issue with one side. But I didn’t know about that hole in it. It’s all back together now and idles fine. Rough on higher throttle. Driving it 1-3 gears are so-so but 4th gear I can barely get to 55mph. 5th gear won’t hold speed. I’ve fiddled with carb sync and nothing helps. After watching your video, I am certain this is the problem. I will report back after I get the carb off, fixed, and reinstalled.

      Also inspect that diaphragm. It could be bound or leaking - look for signs something is wrong on the diaphragm
