The formation of Mujibnagar Government in 1971

Senior leaders of the Awami League, General AG Osmani and the freedom fighters and locals assembled at Baidyanathtala, a mango orchard, which was later named Mujibnagar, in Meherpur on April 17, 1971 to form a provisional government of independent Bangladesh in the absence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had been arrested and flown to Pakistan after Pakistan military had cracked down on the Bangalis on the night of March 25, 1971.
Bangabandhu was declared the first president of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, while vice president Syed Nazrul Islam became acting president in the absence of Bangabandhu.
Tajuddin Ahmad was appointed the first prime minister, while Khandoker Moshtaque Ahmed, M Mansur Ali and AHM Quamaruzzaman were named cabinet members.
১৯৭১ সালের ১৭ই এপ্রিল কুষ্টিয়া জেলার তৎকালীন মেহেরপুর মহকুমার বৈদ্যনাথতলার আম্রকাননে স্বাধীন-সার্বভৌম গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশের প্রথম সরকার আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে শপথ গ্রহণ করে।
এ অনুষ্ঠানে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে ঘোষিত হয় ১৯৭১ সালের ১০ এপ্রিল গঠিত বাংলাদেশ সরকারের স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণাপত্র। সেদিন থেকে এই স্থানটি মুজিবনগর নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে।
