Yes one of my favourites, I bought the album when it was released and found that some tracks suffered from sibilance especially the last track the instrumental on side one. Apparently this was a first pressing and the second was OK (According to R. Waters). The album is good enough to benefit from a remix and re-release.
Its such a fantastic album. "Wot's... Uh The Deal" is probably my favourite. Very underrated in my opinion. And in hindsight "Childhood's End" clearly shows where the Floyd would go next.
Equally a fan of "Wot's...Uh The Deal". It's one of those rarely heard cuts from PF that only realfans know. Obscured By Clouds is about the same as a silver medal being given to a runner from the US in the marathon. Underrated and underappreciated
This album actually celebrated its 50th anniversary a week ago! It's definitely one of the most underappreciated Pink Floyd albums lol, so seeing this video pop up in feed made me smile! Happy 50th, ObC!
Nice to see a fellow Free Four fan, I often see that song dismissed these days but I love it. Obscured by Clouds helped the group gain traction in the States, some tracks on this album back in '72 got decent airplay on underground FM stations.
Terrific review. IMO, the 2 most underrated albums in Pink Floyd's catalogue are Obscured By Clouds and the Division Bell. The only bad track on Obscured By Clouds is the final track and there is not a bad track on the Division Bell.
A really good album which I often play. What's more impressive, is that the album was conceived after the band had started working on DSOTM and was in the middle of touring.
Thank you for recognizing this album as a classic. I heard it long after I had bought my copies of Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Animals, but when I did it gave me a greater appreciation of the bridge between Meddle and Dark Side. Great review!
I think Obscured by Clouds is a rather good album I’d say “Wot’s… Uh the Deal?” is my favourite track, but other favourites are “Mudmen”, “Childhood’s End”, and “Free Four”
Childhoods end is like a precursor to Time from Dark Side. It's got a remix in 2016 for the Early years set but sadly no 5.1 or Stereo remix of Meddle.
Time was likely written and certainly performed before anything from Obscured by Clouds. Dark Side was performed live in its entirety in January 1972 whilst Obscured by Clouds was recorded in the months following that.
Amin. I love this album. It has this weird atmosphere which takes me back.. like in the 70s... As if this album just came out. I love the song whats ah deal ... David and Rick's nice "cooperation*! I miss Rick. His untimely passing. I dont even think he was sick...😢
My favorite song from Obscured By Clouds is of course "Mudmen" super instrumental i also love "When You're In" "Stay" "Wot's... Uh The Deal" and "Childhood's end"
This was my first PF album I ever listened to back in 72 when it was released, I was a fan from then on until Roger left.... “Wot’s… Uh the Deal?” is one of my favourite songs to play on guitar to this very day, most people think its my original 🤣😂🤣
In 1972 this album was, and has since remained, the freshest and most spontaneous sounding of all their work following Barrett's Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
I wholeheartedly agree with this assessment of the album. I've outgrown the relentless pessimism of the later years and have found a greater appreciation for the works during this period of the band's history. They don't have the fine studio polish of those later albums but there is an ethereal and otherworldly quality that paints such vivid pictures in your mind. In Free Four you can hear the seeds of Roger's obsession with his father's death and would appear on other albums in one form or another. A more casual fan will not give these albums much attention and that is ultimately their loss.
Childhoods End is a brilliant song. Gilmour song too. Plus Gilmours singing on this album is him finding his voice. Rick Wright plays some beautiful music on this PF album too. RW lyrics shining. The band at their height, pre DSOTM.
great vid JT. Love this record, got it as a Christmas present back in 2020 and it came in this weird "cut off edges" shape (if you can visualize that in your head). Always loved this album and its a gem
For me this is Davids best work. His tone in all the solos is just so strong, full and raw. There's something accesable about this album, it's the girl next door of Pink Floyd albums. Meanwhile DSOM is completely out of this world unatainable.
Great review, JT! Absolutely Curtains is my least favorite, too. A great album, even if those who think Dark Side is really the 1st Floyd album that "counts." They're fair weather fans! Also, I liked the closing. For those of you who are wondering.what it is, watch the video!
Excellent review! I agree this album is an overlooked gem and showcased their ability to write and perform straightforward rock and gentle ballads. I guess they didn’t bother much with some of the titles though. Ha David resurrected Wots the Deal for his 2006 tour with Rick performing that wonderful piano solo again.
Few people seem to fully appreciate that although OBC was released before Dark Side, by this time The Floyd had already written and toured with the proto Dark Side material. So, in way, one can look on OBC as being a sequel to Dark Side. Also, I regret that so many people seem to underrate the title track. At the time, synthesizers were very innovative and slide guitar wasn't too common either. For those present at the release of OBC, this track was a standout and remains one my all time favourites.
I have to admit I had forgotten how good this album was until last year when I brought the 6th Individual Volume of the Early Years box set. To be honest, I don't think I had heard the album since I brought it on vinyl back in the 70's and even though I replaced most of my Floyd collection on CD, that slipped my mind. I very much think it slipped Gilmour and Waters minds too because they never play a damn thing off the album live and even today they still ignore it. It's as if the album does not exist 😊😊😊. It is an album that very rarely gets mentioned in polls and many discussions about the band. Yet I think it is well worthy of the GOLD Fish and there are some really GREAT! tracks on the album. As a matter of fact, the only thing that separates this album from Meddle is that it does not have a long epic track like "Echoes". The album has always been highly underrated and yet I think it's one of their better albums and certainly not an album to ignore like even I did over all those years. As for Gilmour and Waters ignoring it I would like to know "Uh What's The Deal" 😊😊😊.
It wasn't completely ignored, Gilmour played "Wots... Uh, the Deal" throughout his 2006 tour and was as awesome as ever. I agree that both David and Roger should have played more from this album throughout the years. Not playing Stay in 2006 with Rick on tour with him was a missed opportunity.
Honestly didn't really know this album until I went through and gave it 2-3 listens to track with your reviews. I like it! Kind of feels like a dud in terms of the Atom Heart Mother --> Echoes epics that were being crafted in 1970 and 1971, but I suppose it's got some great stuff. Thanks for continuing to do these reviews!
Certainly one of my favourite Floyd albums. Childhood's End is probably my favourite of the tracks on it but I love most of it and like the rest. The first Floyd album this was the case of for me. Yeah, Meddle had standout Echoes but it also had Seamus and... no.
I agree with the knock on Absolutely Curtains, never understood that song. Stay is one of my favourite songs to play on piano and Wot’s uh the Deal does not seem like it was off this album. I think the best songs off this album are tracks 3, and 5-9. Solid album and a hidden gem in their discography.
@@abecadlo6556 I like those too, but they dont hold up to what the rest of the album has to offer. When You're In is on my PF playlist so it cant be that bad.
I actually thought I wasn’t gonna like this album due to the fact that it came out after Echoes and got in the way before Dark Side but now I’ve listened to it I actually like it! The instrumental “When You’re In” is an epic piece to put together, it kicks ass simply. “Burning Bridges” is as good as Time from Dark Side, David and Rick’s vocals together are beautiful and brilliant for this song. “The Gold” is also a kick ass rocker and it sounds like something Led Zeppelin would produce. Childhoods End, Free Four, and Stay are really good. However I don’t think it’s as good as Echoes but this album is still a good album. But still I gotta give it a spotted fish tho.
This album was when David became confident in his guitar playing and contribution He's tone is overall beter and more feel and of an imitation of Syd's fuzzy guitar sound
Pink Floyd is God. This is my absolute favorite Pink Floyd albums and probably the only album I own which I’ve listed to from start to finish so many times I’ve lost track.
I would have probably given this a spotted fish, but after this review I think I need to give it a relisten. Standsouts for me are: Gold It's In The and Free Four
I've always considered "Stay" an overlooked masterpiece. Its so melancholy and haunting. I've always regretted that they never performed this live, even in their later years when Rick and Dave performed some older tracks such as "What's the Deal" I thought that this would be a great alternative. Overall a hidden gem of an album.
I've got the first A1 version of this album in mint condition that was quickly withdrawn from the shelves due to sibilance. They either remixed it or remastered it and re released it with a different runout matrix no A2.
Of all Floyd albums, Atom Heart, Meddle and Obscured all present Gilmour at his most melodically inventive. Dark Side has great blues playing from him but it is the start of his inexorable slide into bluesy pentatonic pedal-processed noodling, until by the mid 1980s he was a prisoner of his of own style.
I believe the gold that's in the ... was their biggest hit in America at that point. I also read that dark side of the moon helped push this album to platinum status here in the states.
Love all of these tunes, love the album and always in my top 6 albums that stand out from all the rest. I also think this is their only album that works as on shuffle as playing the album. Childhoods End proves David could write lyrics when he put his mind to it and had the confidence (difficult to maintain confidence while in the presence of a lyrical genius, especially one who is as demeaning as he is arrogant). Free Four, wow! what a song! If only Roger in that style for some of his stuff on The Wall and The Final Cut, and David persevered with his own lyrics, how much better would those later albums have been?
@@JTCurtisMusic I’m a big Pink Floyd fan and I’ve listened to all their albums, I do like them all but I think Several Species off of Ummagumma is their worst song.

With the debate whether Pink Floyd purposely synched DSOTM with the Wizard of Oz or not, I am a believer they did. Obscured by Clouds and More tipped me off. Not only does the music and lyrics synch up too well but they have experience with synching their music to movies, twice. They even disgussed the experience they gained making music to match movies in interviews. So the experience and ability is right there in their arsenal.
I think what I love most about this album: it shows they COULD write just a standard album where all three contribute solid material. It didn’t have to be concept albums or dominated by Roger. I feel like if they attempted something like this again after Darkside it might have stopped the inevitable implosion
Just my opinion, but I have always felt that "The gold, it's in the ..." is the final words of a dying man, who croaks before he can reveal the all-important whereabouts. "What's, uh, the deal?" is cod 'hippy talk' - someone trying to be cool, man!
Fantastic album. All tracks are good. The film is terrible. This album and "More" soundtrack are really good for learning and playing guitar especially acoustic.. I just got the free guitar tabs online and eventually played a lot of these songs. It's worth a try and, if you like the music, you will get there.
People complain they like Darkside but not Pink Floyd because Pink Floyd never made another album that sounded like it. I.E. they don't like those one side of album length songs on Meddle, Wish You Were Here, and Animals. I always tell them to listen to this album. It's recorded at the same time as Darkside was being written and covers many of the same themes. And it has a lot of Rick on it.
Funny I never heard someone complain about not liking Wish You Were Here if they liked Dark Side, but I definitely agree that Obscured by Clouds is a more conventional album that general classic rock fans can enjoy.
Totally underrated, when you consider what was about to explode...1973 to 79,,,, six classic albums, only matched by The Beatles ten years earlier....If you take Floyd, Yes, Genesis til 77,Elp,,,,Crimson,Caravan etc....The music generated in this Prog Decade, surpassed everything before and has never been matched since...Magenta, Transatlantic, IQ, Mostly Autumn and Karnataka are today’s Prog Heroes... But it’s back to 71/72****73/ 79, that we have to be grateful for, plus all the modern bands listed above all go back to the seventies heroes.. Sorry l forgot to mention Meddle, Foxtrot, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Selling England, Yes Album etc etc,,,,the list is endless... So go and see Gabriel, Steve Hackett, plus whatever Yes lineup still give performances that we Prog Heads dream about... Yes in Nottingham Concert Hall this Saturday evening, so 150 minutes plus from the Progmeisters themselves here we go.. David Coyne..
@Christopher Bassett - Agreed 100%. I watched because of the Pink Floyd connection but that scene totally turned me off from the movie with no intention to watch again.

Not by JT. Floyd's most underrated album is Piper. It deserved the gold if Obscured did.

Ever wondered why theres an Arthur C. Clarke title on this album? Let's just say La Vallée is vastly overshadowed :3
Lmao that Seinfeld impression
This album is HIGHLY underrated.
god tier album cover
Fantastic album. All tracks are good. The film is terrible. This album and "More" soundtrack are really good for learning and playing guitar especially acoustic.. I just got the free guitar tabs online and eventually played a lot of these songs. It's worth a try and, if you like the music, you will get there.
I think free four sounds like a beatles song from the 64-66 era.
Day 2 of asking for “The Kinks” greatest hits album video
Great album. I saw parts of the movie but the scene of the pig slaughter was horrible.
@Christopher Bassett - Agreed 100%. I watched because of the Pink Floyd connection but that scene totally turned me off from the movie with no intention to watch again.
@@ianfortier6796 Yeah. I know people gotta eat and I'm a meat eater but JEEZUS ...... That shit was brutal.
This album is probaply the greatest thing Pink Floyd did that wasnt 23-minutes long since More
What this got a goldfish but not atom heart mother :/
