Some include $28 to Washington, DC and points in VA as well as Boston from New York, $17 to Philly, and others (this is from my student discount stacked with the lowest saver fare). Also this is great timing as I'm heading to DC on the SB Carolinian (basically a regional that travels to North Carolina and makes less stops) on Monday and I like hearing other perspectives on my favorite and most-used Amtrak service.

That they are! The third track from DC to Baltimore was upgraded to 125mph, so your higher speeds for longer durations was a direct byproduct of the infrastructure upgrades.

I'm gonna be moving down to Hampton Virginia for a new job soon, and I've been thinking about taking the train home to North Jersey for the hollidays instead of driving or flying. What would you guys recommend? Is it a better idea to take the Northeast Regional all the way from Newport News, VA to Newark Penn (~8 hr by train)? Or is it a better idea to drive to DC and take the Acela to Newark Penn instead (~3-4 hr driving, ~ 3 hr by train)?
advise against driving to or past Fredericksburg, as the I-95 backups between there and Woodbridge are guaranteed (outside of graveyard hours, ofc) if you can't make the 2 daily departure times from NPN, even taking a bus to Richmond, then Uber/Lyft to Staples Mill Rd (RVR) for the higher departure frequencies... would be much a better choice

Maglev is a gimmick, just like monorail. It requires its own dedicated track that can't be retrofitted to the existing rail system. High-speed rail on the other hand can integrate seamlessly into the existing US rail system. In fact, the northeast corridor already has a high speed rail system, the Acela. Not anywhere as fast as maglev, but a lot more versatile and therefore practical.
