- The AMC Gremlin is a two-door subcompact car produced in the United States, Canada and Mexico by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) and Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos.
The Gremlin was an economy car by 1970s U.S. standards. It served as a foundation for alternative fuels and power systems, including pure electric.
Designed by Bob Nixon from an idea by Richard A. Teague, the car was based on a shortened and adapted Hornet platform with a Kammback-type tail. Faster than other subcompacts of the time, it competed with the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto, and also with imported cars including the Volkswagen Beetle and Toyota Corona. The manufacturer described it as "the first American-built import".
The Gremlin was introduced on 1 April 1970, and a total of 671,475 were built in its single generation (one chassis design) and also in only one body style.

AMC was so resourceful. Examples of this, along with many others, were their tie-ins with Pierre Cardin and Levi's.
Do you remember the Gucci Hornet Sportabouts?
This is an incredibly rare film. As AMC lost more and more money by 1978, I was never really sure that they continued making these dealer product films. But this Gremlin short proves that they did. Thanks for sharing it!
I actually had a '78 Gremlin with the 2-liter engine and 4-speed transmission. It was a bare-bone base model with literally only a radio and heater, manual steering and manual brakes. I did add a tachometer after one year. Since there was no clock, all I had to do was take out the cover plate for the opening. Little did I know that that engine was probably the only one manufactured that year that still had a point-condenser ignition system after just about everything else had solid state ignition. Not to mention solid valve lifters that needed periodic adjustment and neoprene valve stem oil seals. And a clutch cable that was too long instead of a bellcrank. Mine started puffing smoke during startup after maybe four years because the seals had deteriorated and were allowing oil to get past the valve guides. There was a girl I knew in college who claimed she was i love with Gremlins when in fact she had a massive crush on me. Too bad I didn't feel the same way about her. In any event, I wound up keeping it for almost ten years before trading it in for my '88 Jeep Cherokee, which I still have.
Road head in the gremlin with Levi's guts? What a time to be alive.
I like earlier Gremlin designs, but this ad makes the 78 look good.
I want one, Bring back the old days of AMC.I want it with a 6 cyl
Gremlin's with 6 cylinder engines were known as "Stump Pullers". Tough little SOB's! We called 'em Kenosha Cadillacs! AMC had assembly plants in Milwaukee too and A.O. Smith (farm silo guys) made frames for them. Loved the Levis package.
I had a '72' gremlin with the 6 cylinder engine aka 4.2 litre and loved that car. It sure was a 'Stump Puller' alright.
Last year of pushing gremlin..it became spirit in 79.
LOL @2:08 ... "And the winner is you!" - she was the only one who entered!
This would be the last year production for the AMC Gremlin, it was replaced by the AMC Spirit for 1979.
Good riddance
Which was basically a Gremlin.
You don't see cool stuff like this anymore!
The coolest thing here is that bicentennial MI license plate...
The girl was cute.
if you pay very close attention at the very beginning of the commercial, you'll notice that the lady in the frock is actually looking at a painting of herself...lol
They were ahead of their time in using liters to describe engine displacement when other American manufacturers were still using cubic inches.
the much maligned Gremlin but I remember as a teen in the 70s it made a lot of teenagers and college students or first jobbers pretty darn happy, economical, low cost and really pretty darn reliable and cheap to maintain. my first car was a vw beetle but I actually wished I'd bought a Gremlin.
Good film. I had two Gremlins, a 1973 and a1978. The 73 had the levy interior and not much else. The 78 was loaded. Neither gave me any trouble and it was totaled in 82. I would just love to have the 73 back. They were both great little cars. The 73 was my first car.
I'm pleased to see the Michigan Bicentennial license plates still representing 2 years later. I do remember Jeeps with Levi's interiors around this time. Let's not presume that Mom wasn't up for something "dangerous," especially when you consider the timeframe that straw hat and armband ensemble signified. I don't recall seeing it too much in '78.
She may have been.
That's pretty cool. My first car was a 1978 Gremlin. I got it for $300 in 1989. I don' think I fully appreciated it when I had it, but it was a cool little car.
I had to pay $2600 for my 72 gremlin but it was brand new. Bought it at Midway American in Wichita Ks
Randall AMC dealership in Mesa, Arizona received AMC's endorsement to build 401 cu in (6.6 L) V8 powered Gremlins. The cars started out as 304 V8 models from the factory and after Randall's modifications would run 13.90 seconds at 103-106 miles per hour (171 km/h) in the quarter mile, for $2,995. Known as the Randall 401-XR (X for Gremlin X, R for Randall), a total of twenty cars were built for the street and one for the strip during 1972, 1973, and 1974. And that would be the one I want......
Me too. There's sort of a counter cool to these cars.
I had one of the 74 gremlin xr401 I loved it my first car caused me to lose my license for a few years but it was worth it
I love Gremlins.
WE delivered the Morning papers out of 1 of these!!
Must've been great to be single in 78! Come in my Gremlin...sure! Wow
Thanks for uploading this.I have one of these in mint condition. The 2 litre is a bit underpowered but gets the job done.Such a cool car and not many around these days.BTW,mine is a red levi interior with autumn red exterior Gremlin X.
Just curious, you still have it?
Thanks for sharing. I had a few more but lost them in a corporate shuffle.
Apparently the 2 liter engine came from Renault, and was the same engine bought by Porsche to put in the 924. I drove one in 1981 and it was fast enough to get me into a spectacular accident that ended with the front end in a brick wall.
I just looked it up, the engine was a VW EA831 series. That engine was also used in VW trucks, the Audi 100, the Porsche 944 and the Jeep DJ (mail Jeep).
That was a VW engine not a Renault.
At 4:37 he's thinking "Great, now I have to get rid of TWO bodies....
Hermoso auto!
Es hermoso no como la kk de ahora
Yes! the Jimmy Carter era.
Mother?!...LOL that was great!!!
I had 3 Gremlins: 1974 X, 1977 and 1978.
Oh lord, now I'm in love with the Gremlin lady.
Old simp
My dream car 🚗
I wish i had the gremlin they had on Married With Children.
I have a red 1977 and even with the little 4 cylander 2.0 Litre engine, it's the only car I own where I can take it up to 90 kph, turn the wheel sharply and not experience any body lean. - Kids...don't try that at home! LOL!
Everything to do With AMC I Love It 😁😁 I Would Prefer This Model With The 258 CU IN Inline Six With an Automatic Just Saying
I wish I could still get parts for mine! I also have that 2 litre engine from Audi.
I remember the Levi’s package
Lo que antes era VAM
Vehículos
Automotrices
Mexicanos
después fue: AMC
American
Motors
Company
The moment I saw the interior I can recall how easily it fell apart on some of those cars. I remember those cloth doors tearing like napkins and breaking like pencils. The lifespan (about 3-5 years) of some of that material was very short if it was left out in the sun.
domestic cars kinda were all like that
till they went to alot of plastics
The people who wrote/directed this must have been either former or future employees in the porn industry. There's just too many of those, "oh, they're going to take their clothes off now" moments.
Well...it WAS the 1970's! LOL!
Last year for the gremlin.
The first 3 minutes lookslike a serial killer reenactment Never take a ride with a strange white male in 1978 LOL
What a homely care
Yeah, those Gremlins were always chick magnets! 😜
its all going well until you see the back lol
I really can't imagine one of these with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine. This is still a bit heavy for that. Usually these had 258 ci 6 cylinder engines or 304 V8s! There was a 232 ci 6 cylinder for a while. What was the 0 to 60 time on the 4 cylinder, 30 seconds?
She got a Car, He got some Azz...lol
I hope she won the car
"And the winner is..."
*cricket cricket*
"You I guess."
Last gremlin year.
This whole commercial has a Serial killer Ted Bundy feel to it.
Notice this one has stick shift. How many US cars have this?
Uhh... most of them?
Nowadays manual transmission is like 5% of the market, back then it would have been higher at least 25%?
@@aarond23 25% seems low for the UK. If you want to drive a stick shift in the UK you have to pass our Gold Plated driving test in a stick shift. Despite this my daughter passed first time after only 5 months of training. It's given her independence
@@IsochestThe US car market has pretty much abandon the manual transmission, you can get on on a low end Honda or Toyota maybe but finding a manual SUV is extremely rare, just no demand for these
Google says 1.7%
Was the 4 a Renalt Engine; I only thought AMC went down to an inline 6?
'78 would've had the Audi 2.0 litre four stripped of it's fuel injection and replaced with a carburetor. I think it made all of 90 horsepower. I think they kept this engine around for two season before going with the GM Iron Duke finally coming up with their own 4 cylinder in 1984.
Why is it BEHIND the curtain? To hide the ugliness ?
Look of the times? lol....sometimes the past was way worse than the nostalgic among us can admit
They made the Gremlin real ugly in the end. The tail lights and front end were just not attractive like the earlier models were.
Wrong. AMC was making more and more money. Look at the annual reports. They owned Jeep, and they also owned AM General and had lucrative contracts. The 70's was the heydays for AMC contrary to your myth. That's why Renault invested in them. The idea was to launch Renault cars in the USA and AMC would gain technological advantages for more efficient cars. But they WEREN"T losing money.
Osborn Tramain, from what I recall reading about AMC in the 70s and 80s, that they had no money to invest in new AMC models. So, maybe they weren't losing money, but they weren't making enough money to invest in new models and to compete with the Big Three. Are you saying that the failure to develop new models was a result of mismanagement and not finances? I'm not disagreeing, I just never read or heard that AMC made profits sufficient for a viable long term future.
The Nissan Juke of its time......
No.
This presentation is kinda dated for 1978...but I suppose it's rather fitting for a 9 year old car model. (I really like Gremlins...not complaining.)
hilarious!
but did she really win in the end lol. This model looks like it would be more of a mans car just by the way it looks and with that rally package you don't see too many chicks driving stuff like that
porsche 924 motor
Also Jeep Dispatcher motor.
Six or V8 for this car... The four cyl in the Gremlin was that P.O.S. VW/Audi engine.
LMAO..........The advertising is as corny, pollyanna and tired as the car!
So?
I had that piece of crap, lol.
Oh this is so horrible.
