I know all these steps already, but my creativity is bad as touching sh*t. Even if I try to make the best block design I can make, it still doesn't look like rate worthy and don't feel like what other rated levels feel like
A lot of it comes down to practice and finding lots of inspiration honestly - most people don’t instantly improve in a few days after all. Keep it up, you got this ^^
I have a question: is it ethical and allowed to use AI generated reference images for art. I’m wondering on a robotic art boss for my level and I used AI to generate the basic shape for the boss before filling it in with my own details and designs. Since AI creates images by combining multiple pieces of existing art that is impossible to credit, is it plagiarism to use AI reference images if I add my own details?
I strongly dislike using AI as a reference but it goes beyond plagiarism. AI doesn’t understand how objects work the same way humans do, because it doesn’t live - which leads to artifacts like everything looking glossy, the famously disfigured hands, etc. I think it’s best to use references made by living things who share the human experience, since that’s who will be consuming your levels as art.
The top-down approach, as you call it, is great for art levels with lots of details, but remember Wulzy in his building series almost always uses a bottom-up approach. Some building styles just work better that way.
Before watching this video, I was working primarily on two project and without realizing it, I was making one with a bottom-up approach and one with a top-down one; It's great to know why one is turning out so much better than the other.
Basically just fit the objects into your idea, don’t fit your idea into the objects. I’m thinking of making my first level soon, and I made a list of a bunch of ideas, even before picking out a song at all. Next for me is actually starting the level layout. It’s going to utilize the horizontal separation dual for the majority of the level.
Also, if anyone has anymore ideas/advice for me on how to use the editor and make levels I’d be happy for feedback. I’m trying to learn so it would be appreciated, thank you.
@@ghog__ yes, but that’s not what “literally” means. There are other ways to emphasize it without using a word in a way that pretty much nobody thinks means that.
There are a lot of factors for level quality! You could do all the things we’ve mentioned in previous uploads (giving details a purpose, getting lots of inspiration, etc.) and still be lacking some art knowledge which would help your levels look better.
this is a type of channel ive wanted to see around for years but nobodys actually done it before please continue uploading, your editing is amazing and straight to the point.
Something i used to decorate better was taking the new pixel objects in 2.2 (since they have the most variety), adding them to my block design as a placeholder, and later takking them out and and remaking them in the theme or style of the level
I knew this was what top creators were doing but didn’t really know what to call it. Honestly takes a lot of creativity, extensive knowledge of editor objects and thinking outside the box to actually perfect the “top-down” approach. Every time I’ve tried decoration I’ve always done bottom up because I would have no clue what to do otherwise
Is there someone here in the comments who can decorate like this? I need help for a project. If if helps I'm not a noob and I've been playing for years. I need someone with this kind of skill, doesn't have to be perfect!
This is actually a really helpful analysis of different ways to make decoration and makes quite a lot of sense, good job. Whilst bottom-up might be a good way to make simpler levels, top-down is really useful for more complex ideas. I ran into a major roadblock when making my level because it was heavily themed and just filling outlines in with default GD objects was no longer efficient, so I switched to a more top-down approach later, but I think it was already a tad too late.
Alright, this was actually really helpful! I was struggling to make any progress with my level's decoration even though I had so many ideas but didn't think that my approach was the one hindering my progress. Thanks a lot!
A more efficient way of creating is by using the reference image mod. Just draw the background, and block design and try to replicate it as close as possible using the mod. Really reduces the time that you spend on thinking of ideas and designs. ( This might've been said in the video but my way of saying it is to use your own art and not some random images on google.)
This doesn’t work for everyone - not everyone has the ability to draw, after all. Furthermore, to replicate the drawing in-game requires you to choose efficient objects anyways, which is the whole point of this video.

Using a bottom-up approach is generally less efficient than a top-down one, so if you want to use your time well you should opt for the latter.

That depends on a few factors. Your ideas could be too complex for you to make, or you may not have used it enough to get experienced, for example.
