I know it's been 10 years since you've posted these, but as someone just getting into double base I've found your videos very approachable and helpful. Thank you, John!
Very true I feel like over time I automatically started doing this but another tip I don’t think he mentions is dont squeeze the neck try more pulling the strings into the bass and into your body then the muscles in your hand don’t get so tired and start to hurt because your using the big muscles in your shoulders, I only recently discovered this and it really does help with playing for longer periods of time
Thank you for all your tips John. I just purchased the Ray Brown Bass Method and I found your bass tips videos which will make a nice companion in my bass studies.
Great tips John!! I'm about to make the transition from bass guitar to upright so I'm doing some advance learning - this kind of thing is invaluable and very easy to grasp. Free the chicken! :)
I still like choking the chicken, but only on the e string, especially on the low g with the fourth finger. Otherwise I cannot develop enough strength. It still works pretty well for me, also intonation-wise.
Thanks John! I've found myself doing this a lot during a long practice session or a day with a large volume of playing but never really knew if it was technically wrong or what to do about it. To avoid it, should I just play more and more and develop more strength so that I can last longer?
