My dad and I have always been similar but different, and this episode brought this single through line to the forefront. When he was a young lad, he built tons of model planes and even painted them and hung them all around his room. I grew up in the environment of pushing me to do what I like, no matter what that focus was. He grew up in upstate rural New York in the 70s, no one else was doing this. I started with zoids, but didn't paint, I hated how shaky my hands were and felt I was not "good enough". He got a few tank models, specifically the Abrams which he piloted, and didn't paint it while I built my zoids. He asked if I wanted gunpla, knowing I didn't like painting, but maybe the robots were cool enough, no thanks. So he would just work on his tanks and me on my zoids. Then, I got more into DnD, and was reading 3.5 rules and he would tell me of stories of him in dungeons. He never tried to force his way into a game, or run one for me, just got me excited and want to emulate. I stopped building minis, and just bought prepainted minis for games, dropping 100 dollars on a few dozen minis. And he would help me find cool minis, and for birthday/Christmas buy a small goblin, one he liked, and a 15 dollar gift card to cool stuff Inc. Now, I play, build, and paint a few games, and make my own models. And he's painting his mustangs, his abrams, his Sherman, and we swap paint and tools all the time, but he never tried to force me to do what he did, just guided and let me build my own confidence and never compared where he was to where I was. Thanks Dad. 'Ppreciate it.
I move 218 miles away from my local warhammer groups , I finally got a new group by learning 1 freind liked painting and art ... so I bought them some warhammer ... hiding it as a birthday gift ... that was 1 hooked . then the other 2 freinds fell in because no one wants to be separated from the group.... Break one , the rest will follow. but I would suggest starting with a Skrimish style as most people struggling with the concept of spending
Can't help it when it's misinformation, but MSG isn't unnatural, it isn't harmful, has no brain or mental effects. MSG exists naturally in sea weed, parmesan and tomatoes. It's strongly related to the 5th taste: Umami, which roughly translates as yumminess. As a flavor, it's not like sour or sweet, it's more of a mouth feel.
I used to spec on magic cards to pay for college. Purchase them at the pre order and bank on them spiking in price. Such a rush and solid cash (a long time ago)
I remember when my friends and I talked about playing warhammer and one of them said he would play but not paint the models. Now he loves painting them.
bruh if my friend is gonna talk my ear off about some sports draft or some trade or injury then you better believe I'm retaliating with talking about the various vampire families in AoS
Finding out if your Friend is a Timmy, Johnny or Spike can also help choosing the right stuff to start the hobby. Vince has a great podcast episode on Psychographic Profiles.
I think the biggest mistake is assuming GW/40k/AOS are interchangeable with "hobby". They are subsets of something so much bigger and chances are you can find something there if you broaden the definition.
I'm getting my best friend into Warcry by explaining it's got more dice rolling, all combat and it's only 10 miniatures AND the game lasts less than 45 minutes. Warcry and Vermintide 2 have been a great gateway.
Another tip when trying to get people into mini painting: maybe focus more on skirmish or small army games. Gaming miniatures are a big investment, including if you buy from GW. It can be easier to get people into games if they only need to get, like, a squad or two. Games like Kill Team or Warcry, Grimdark Future: Firefight or Age of Fantasy: Skirmish, Frostgrave or Stargrave, Zona Alfa, etc. Games where you don't need to build a full army. Where you can get by with buying a box or two, and focus on building those models to completion. Or else if you insist on a big army game, sell them on small model count games. We're talking Combat Patrols or such. 500 pt games. You don't need to throw them into the deep end of 2000 pt tournament play. People who never considered it before won't go for that (especially once they see what all those models will cost).
I assume someone else chimed in but just in case not the reason that troops fought in a line in the gunpowder era was the firearms were generally so inaccurate. They needed to fire clustered together to have a chance of hitting anything. :)
scalpers wouldn't exist to nearly the same degree if gw didn't constantly do limited release runs and editions of everything. FOMO is what drives scalpers to make such a profit.
I’ve slowly but surely been infecting my friends with the gateway drug that is warhammer lore, and leaving my terrrain and models out on the table on purpose.
Jon, you're a mini painter and a gamer, they likely know this about you, and the "magic" they are inquiring about is most likely "Magic: The gathering" the CCG. Faygo is my favorite soda, but that's only because I'm a Juggalo! Jon, the AM army you are building and painting for that commission? Why not make some videos? Could make a decent playlist right? The journey through a commission is something I have experience with as I used to almost solely paint for commissions, but I think a lot of people may be interested in what it may be like.
I’m wondering, why when you are paid to paint an army you are also responsible for assembling them? Shouldn’t the person who cons you into taking a PAINTING commission do the assembly?
Assembling the minis yourself as a painter helps keep quality control... for cleaning and preparing the minis for paint. Once assembled, some areas are impossible to clean and would leave blemishes on the finished product. Also, some minis work best in sub assembly to paint them.
Was it a magic the gathering theme? Anyone know it's been a year since this podcast. A nice story the lady at my local game store just gave my 10 year old boy an $80+ worth deck of cards. I love the gaming community
I'd say that Over detail is the biggest plague in Patreon based 3D Sculptors. The biggest at fault is Loot Studios. They are beautiful, as 75mm but they scale those down to 25mm and it's a nuisance to paint and not to break the minis.
I feel like Jon personally called me out. The Wolves are the best chapter though. Do know your audience, but if you want to see a glaze in someone’s eyes start with the Unification Wars
My buddy: "Hey! You should start playing 40k so we can hang out more often and play!" Me: "How much cost are we talking?" Friend: "Like maybe $500'ish..." Me: Eye flutter
Preamble ramble thoughts: Jon is dressed like a dude who likes Limp Bizkit. The black and white T with the cargo camo pants? Definitely. What We Painted Thoughts: I haven't painted anything in nearly a month and I'm bad. Topic Discussion Thoughts: Finding a game they may enjoy is a good one. I have a buddy into Mork Borg as a TTRPG, which I enjoy. The miniatures game that is inspired by Mork Borg, Forbidden Psalm, would be a good way to get him in, specially if I 3d print models for him. News Thoughts: Fuck capitalism.
My geek friends don't have the patience to paint and are intimidated by it. I'm planning to get them to play the games with me (I have enough plastic for everyone...)
Scott, Kramer didn't get in trouble for anti-Semitism, he got in trouble for making very racist remarks to some black audience members when they heckled him.
Jon’s gonna be real surprised when his coworkers throw him a Magic the Gathering birthday meeting
You beat me to it Donavin, I piture Jon sitting confused. "I like all theses vampiers. But who the Hell is Jace mind sculptor Guy".
Exactly what I thought of, lol.
Jep it'll be MTG alright.
Exactly what I was thinking.

I love how whenever model kits come up Jon always jumps to "the U.S.S. Saratoga" and no other ships.
Tendies, TUP, and turning friends to the darkside. Thanks for selecting my topic! Really enjoyed the episode!

Also debunked in connection to headaches. Original author of study had poor methodology, since retracted.

TuP Live, what a briliant idea. And was hilarious to watch how they got more and more exited.
A very entertaining episode.
I remember when my friends and I talked about playing warhammer and one of them said he would play but not paint the models. Now he loves painting them.
They probably know you're into nerd stuff so one guy was like "uhhh I think it's a game called Magic." Enjoy your MTG themed party!
Dude it's MTG they are taking about I bet.

Best bit in months. I could totally picture this "fantasy football friend" group.

I heard that several times, but our games always take longer, we slow, prolly 🙃
Listened to the podcast, it’s so great to hear you guys having fun together! Have a nice magic themed zoom meeting 😂
Magic the gathering magician styled birthday. It’s gonna get weird
There was a Tau 3rd Ed codex out on one of the art Dept game devs desks so talking about freeguy does have mini content Merit!
Jon: "I ReAlLy EnJoY BUILDING DANG THE MODELS!!! STOP ASKING!"

Jon's cookin' with gas this episode

I have to say that "The Whole Nine Yards" is an excellent movie starring one of the Friends cast as the main character. I highly recommend it!
Liverpool is apparently a translation from olde English for Thick Muddy Water pond / pool
Scalpers are the landlords of collectible communities
BUT THE SPACE WOLVES ARE THE BEST CHAPTER!
Jons accent game is on point once again. “M’lord” Jesus Christmas.
It's called the queen bean fellas...
"Are there *really* places that buy stuff they don't want? Just to sell them on, at a profit?"
"Yes, Scott. They're called 'shops'."
Lol! I read 'Join my guilt' instead of 'Join my cult' and thought of the whole pile of shame thing 🤣
just keep it at season 2 and keep the episodes going forever "this is episode 305 season two." tendies and dew forever.
Watching this more often! Thx!
I didn’t know I needed an addiction to Uncle Roger, so thanks for that.
47:58- I'm crying I'm laughing so hard. Thank you guys that was hilarious, OMG.
Mi-Mi's night! Mini's and Millers.
Jon rapping Limp Bizkit gave me diabeetus
Best episode yet, hilarious!!
Jon's getting ICP to do a new theme song
TUP live would be more informative than any TedX ever broadcast.

Love painting, love to show it off. Would never show a friend any Games Workshop products with the intent to draw them to it.
I'd love to visit a Diet Dew & Dwarfes! Hell you guys are great! Love your content
Your will is done. There is a post and hashtag #️⃣ on the Facebook page
Jon sounding like Saltzpyre from vermintide in that intro
I'm guessing some of needing 2 spaces is anticipation for potential physical distancing and crowd restrictions b/c of Covid

43:20 wait...is Jon's life the movie Clerks?
The Paint Bravely sprues called y"all out for Adepticon. That's what I want to see.
Just occurred to me that Gwin would be really set off by a swamp background, not just the base
I would just love to have some people to game with; I will gladly paint the minis.
The ladies like basing… I’m like look at all these flowers you could put on it…
Scott- "Don't show them price tags, Dear god no." Haha, yep :)
But how do I convince my friend to paint his grey army?
I must say, Scott has been looking particularly manly as of late. Great video, lol. You guys are freakin’ hilarious.
Key forge is so fun
We're "miniacs" where as you (Scott) is "The Miniac" - see also "devils" / "The Devil"
Come on over for Minis and micro brews.

t-shirt canon, but when you unwrap the shirt, there's a mini inside
Yes live please!

Jon, you probably mentioned gaming and they are asking if you are into Magic the gathering.
I love you guys!
Of course if someone asked me if I like Magic, I would say "Hell yeah"...then be expecting some time of Magic: The Gathering product.....
Drunken mini painting live at a local bar in Schaumburg
