Musa exemplifies what every great public sociologist should strive for! Outstanding scholarship with a keen sense of how to honestly & thought-provokingly disseminate information to us layfolks. Brilliant guy.
I read an article by Musa and really liked it, but was weirded out by the fact that quite a few of his articles were published in venues I take to be right wing mouthpieces. Listening to this wonderful interview explains why he publishes in those venues, while also causing me to reflect on my own biases that explain my own reaction. Thanks for the interview, I'll certainly be pre-ordering Musa's book!
I was taken by Musa's comment on being charitable when engaging with arguments against one's position - it reminded me of Michael Scriven's book, Reasoning, back in the 1970s, and Scriven's position on extending the principle of charity in argument. We all gain when we do not demonize opposition. Even more noteworthy - Musa's ability to take opposition, and calumny, in the case of Fox pundits, and others - and use it to reexamine his own thinking, taking other points of view into account. This is an excellent, rare example of generosity in thought.
I’m going to say no. When the two sides have opposing fundamentals and amongst those is not included tolerance for the views’ of others , then it has to be ‘no’. There is a failure in too many to appreciate the possibility for others to hold a completely alien mindset to their own. Possibly stemming from an over application of the concept ‘we’re all the same’. This is a dangerous failure in imagination and rejection of observable reality which lies at the root of many of the world’s problems.
This is exactly how I feel when Musa's talks about pathologizing Trump voters. Some people probably went overboard, but a lot of Republicans do actually believe very stupid things (and I say this as a conservative myself). Xenophobia largely drives their views towards immigrants for instance, not economic anxiety.

"Tenured radicals". That's a classic term that I love.
