Are you considering moving to Sicily as an expat? Wondering about the monthly living costs? Let's break it down for you.
Housing costs in Sicily can vary depending on the location and size of the accommodation. On average, you can expect to pay around 500 to 800 euros per month for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center. Grocery expenses in Sicily are relatively affordable compared to other European countries. A monthly budget of 200 to 300 euros per person should cover your basic food needs.
Transportation costs in Sicily are also reasonable. A monthly pass for public transportation will cost you around 30 to 50 euros. Utilities such as electricity, water, heating, and garbage will add up to about 100 to 150 euros per month. Internet and mobile phone services will cost an additional 20 to 30 euros each. Overall, as an expat living in Sicily, you can expect to spend around 1000 to 1500 euros per month on your basic living expenses. Of course, this is just a rough estimate, and actual costs may vary.

We are happy that you enjoyed Sicily, as it was a favorite end to our six weeks in Italy. We would however hate for any of your viewers to be dissuaded from spending time in Palermo because you “heard” or it “has the reputation” of not being safe. We stayed in the La Kalsa neighborhood near the marina and had a lovely Airbnb in a mainly locals area that was not only quiet, but very safe at night, full of small shops, artisans, and fantastic food. Palermo is a larger city and has a certain amount of “city grit”, but the reputation you mention is not accurate in our visit to this must visit in Sicily, and there was so much to do and see there, including the Norman Palace it’s breathtaking Palatine Chapel, and the Garibaldi Gardens and the amazing flea market on Sundays. We enjoyed the whole of the Sicily experience so much that we plan to return to just Sicily for a month and rent a car, like several other areas of Italy which bear a return trip for better exploration. But we took only trains and were very pleased. Taormina was indeed another must visit, but it was a bit more expensive than other areas (but it was our treat because it was at the end of our trip and we wanted to bring some ceramics back, and Taormina was definitely worth the shopping! Plus our Airbnb there was the penthouse guest apartment of a family palazzo with a private terrace, complete with several large trees and outdoor furniture, overlooking the Ionian Sea and very close to the Hotel San Domenico, was the nicest Airbnb experiences on our entire trip. Overall, we found the atmosphere, the people, the sites and the food, among the highlights of our trip, half of which was spent south of Naples (which we would also highly recommend!).
Hi Marshall, we appreciate the insightful reply. Palermo is a lovely city. We were very concerned about parking our car there. We have a friend who had fuel stolen from his car and a few other things. Petty theft is a concern. I am sure you will enjoy a trip to Sicily. It’s a beautiful island.

We just loved Palermo and could imagine living there. It offers great bars and restaurants, fabulous markets, plenty of quality entertainment options, and nice people.
Palermo is a charming city. It’s a bit bigger than our ideal location, but it does have a lot to offer especially if you enjoy nightlife.

We stayed in Terrasini last summer. It was very nice except for a restaurant that treated us very badly down by the beach.

My understanding is that you can avoid the coperto for a cappuccino by ordering at the bar and standing, which is sort of what Italians do instead of take-out. Obviously less relaxing than sitting on a piazza, but the 1.5 euro that I spent was about a quarter of what it costs here in the US.
Are you going anywhere else in Italy?
We have just recently learned about this too. I can only imagine the price in the US at this point. We have seen inflation throughout Europe.
We were in Northern Italy over the summer. We loved the area around Como, Bergamo and Milan. We didn’t do many videos over summer however, Warren’s stepmother passed away and by the time he was in the mood to focus on the channel the videos were dated.

After visiting several countries in Europe over the past 3.5 years, we reached the conclusion that california is worth it and the best place for us (for now). @WarrenJulieTravel I'm fortunate to have found a renovated mobile home in San Marcos, CA for 256k with rent control lot rent of 630 per month. I'm in a 55 and up park walking or bike distance to a nice lake with a few resturants and golf course. I almost bought a home in Zambrone, Calabria with incredible sea and beach views for 145,000 euros. Tropea and Pizzo are worth checking out.

The reason I ask is we also travel with our dog and are always interested in where they allow and where they are not. One other thing, you should do a separate short review vlog on your car and how and what you pack. Just a thought. 🍻🍻

How did you like Isola Della Femmine? It is very close to my family’s ancestral town so it could be a good home base for us between Carini and Palermo.
There is a thing to know about getting coffee in Italy. If you stand at the bar/counter there is no cover charge. That is where you find the locals. It is usually about double to sit at a table due to the cover charge.
I hope you are able to make it to Sicily next year.

Thanks for the tip. We were fortunate in Ortigia at a beautiful cafe across from Santa Lucia church. We had tea and cappuccino and they brought us a complimentary pastry with no coperto.

I think you are speaking about the café in Ortigia. It was definitely in the tourist area, but it really seemed like almost everywhere was about the same price. Thanks for watching us😊
The coperti fees are not for the service, but because you're utilising space at the restaurant. You dont pay this if you takeaway. In Europe, I think you may have noticed that restaurants don't push you out and you can stay as ong as you want, even if you dont consume any more things and just sit and tak. This fee is a way of baancing the fact that you may be taking away additional profits from the restaurant as you coud potentialy be taking away a spot for other people who will sit and eat.
We understand this and with extensive travel, we have not seen it very often. We along with many others have options to sit for hours in many cafe’s in many countries without this obligatory fee.
It’s simply an observation.

Auto insurance, depreciation on vehicle and maintenance/tires, etc., fixed utilities back at your home. pet food and animal expenses. Just wondering about things not mentioned.

Your comments about the “coperto” costs in restaraunts being annoying was annoying.
Please remember that culturally here in Sicily, where I have lived for 3 years now, a person can sit at a table during lunch or dinner for as long as they choose. This I mean exactly that, as long as they choose…so table turnover for volume of customers does not happen like in the USA. Nor are you hovered over to get done and leave. The level of customer service in my experience is very good and appropriately attentive. I believe a “coperto” is fair.
We are not new to traveling Europe. We have been doing it for decades and nonstop over the past three years, and pointed this out to our viewers because it’s not charged everywhere throughout Europe.
I find it a bit expensive. I love Sicily but I was expecting half of the total price that you guys paid.
We did expect it to be a bit less expensive than it was.

That’s an extremely complicated answer. We are not qualified to answer it.
Just curious - do you have to get permission to video tape in an Airbnb?
Not really, we actually let most of them know we will be videoing and we may use their home in a video. Nobody has ever been negative about it. There is no reason to not video unless they state not to in their listing.
Which software are you using to track your expenses?
Simple Excel. I built a spreadsheet years ago. I take notes on my phone each time we are out and spend cash and I look at the credit card statements for those expenses. 😊

That is a good number considering the moving around. Surprised by the restaurant cost. Figured more expensive.
There are definitely much more expensive restaurants than those that we chose.
I remember seeing most of the soups in most restaurants were about €10 which is substantially higher than several countries we have visited
