Tip: You can make an intake leak detector tool out of the old filter. Just take a hacksaw and cut off the end of the filter with the "female" fitting, about one inch below the edge. Then stuff a tire schraeder valve in the female fitting. You may have to shave down the rubber a bit to get it to fit. I JB Weld mine in to make sure no air leaks there. This will fit perfectly in the J boot when it's detached from the AFM. Introduce about 5psi of air then listen for leaks in the engine bay or use soapy water on the vacuum lines to look for leaks. You may want to rinse the filter with water before cutting so that no sparks from the hack saw or dremel tool will cause an explosion. I got creative and took out the core on the valve and attached some clear vinyl tubing to the valve and then puffed on a cigar and blew smoke into the tubing. Found some bad O rings on the bottom of the Air/Oil separator which was causing a huge vacuum leak.
Yeah, I’m the 2nd owner of a 1987 944 turbo that bought in 1991and just changed my fuel sending unit, strainer, pump, and filter in 2019. 32 years later! I had it parked for 14 years in garage and had to replace those to get it running. It’s got 74,200 miles on it now (Oct. 25, 2021). I didn’t remove the axel though. I hope that was a separate issue.
I agree! It took some time to grow on me, but I've kept it longer than any other car. Damn I was in 4th-5th grade in 03 so I had no idea what this car was haha.
Lol, "yes axle is still off, it's been months" ... I am there right now. Started with replacing a wheel bearing, then turned into one of those "well, while I'm here ... lets order these parts and fix stuff! Ah crap need this tool! Damn well those seized bolts broke - parts ordered. Meh the weather sucks. Hmm, that's interesting lets fix that, parts ordered, weather sucks again, oh yea I did have that other problem maybe it's down here somewhere" Fortunately not everything is expensive on these car especially if your doing the work yourself

i made one out of pvc pipe but that's a great tip to use the fuel filter, thanks!
Solid suggestion.

Nice car. The 944 is quite a classic. I remember driving this on Need for Speed Porsche unleashed back in 2003. Now the game is a classic too.

Great video. Good camera angle and straight to the point. Doing this on my 944 this weekend so thanks for this video!
Thanks for posting this, I'm about to undertake the same job and this saves me hunting for my Haynes manual. Cheers.
Nope I have no idea what type of car it is ;-) . It amazes me on how clean it is underneath
haha, it's heavily undercoated on the bottom
a DIY Car Guy lol I understand why
Thank you very much
Love that blue
Good shit
