Jim Varney made over 4,000 commercials as Ernest. Four thousand! That is unreal. What's even more unreal is that he had the ability to churn them out without making people grow sick and tired of seeing him. His commercials made me smile every time. He was a good actor, a funny comedian and a great human being. I know he's in a better place, but I do miss seeing him on my tv every day. Thanks for the many years of making me and countless others laugh. Varney, you are the best at what you did.
I remember visiting some family in Billings, MT in the 1990s. I was watching TV and there was Ernest doing a commercial for the local Chevrolet dealership!
My aunt was a nurse at the doctors office that Jim used to go to before he died. He was a really intelligent man, and incredibly nice. His only gripe was how many people thought he was actually inept like his Ernest character, it didn't stop him from doing the character but he was actually extremely smart and well read.
I grew up with him and I cried like a baby when he died, well, I kind of was little, I was five when he passed, but God I loved him. He always made me laugh, I'm going to show the Ernest movies to my kids when I get older, he's too funny to be forgotten
TheYoshidude20 It's the times that changed, and the people adapt to the times. Bieber could have never existed and been popular in the days of Ernest, he'd have become something completely different. Oh how I miss the good ol' days of the 80s and 90s...
Hello, 2015. This is 2020, and that specific "Dear God" comment doesn't work. You can ask for another person who's like Jim Varney, but not a direct replacement. We lost B.B. King but gained Kingfish. Knowhatimean?
Cyborcat he is really hilarious in the blooper reels. His laughs are contagious and he is a complete goofball. I first saw Ernest in a movie called Ernest goes to jail when I was probably 5 or 6
These commercials were shown in a variety of local TV markets throughout the USA, for all kinds of products and companies. He would only work with one client in each city so he wasn't competing with himself.
Jim Varney was a true unsung legend. From Fernwood2night to The Beverly Hillibillies Movie. He was subtle yet versitile. I was so shocked to hear of his passing, yet with my movie collection and UA-cam here - he'll always be alive forever. Thanks Vern. :)
The commercials were shot at director John Cherry's house in Nashville. Yeah, talking about shooting on a small scale. The children's show he did in 1988 was shot at his own home in White House, Tenn.
@MechaTailsMK2 There have been a few commercials made after Jim Varney's death that had an animated Ernest and an Ernest impersonator. However, they really can't replace the real deal.

It takes a genius to play dumb. Even Jim’s Shakespeare performances are outstanding
Ernest: Squeeze your tomatoes, trust Robert's for your dairy products--(phone rings, Ernest answers it) And answer the phone! Hello?
XDDDD
+Sanka Jones I wonder who was on the phone? LOL
I have this VHS tape....it's about 45 minutes worth of hilarious commercials. It never gets old.
Jim Varney died at his home nine years ago today.
RIP.
Thanks to sites like UA-cam, his talents live on for so many to enjoy and appreciate!

Dear God, if you give us back Jim Varney. We'll give you Justin Bieber.

I don't know why, but I always loved his eyes.
He was such a great comedic actor.
