    Yes please do a video on the "five free" (seven free, etc.) thing! I'm interested what the common ingredients are, and how many brands actually still use them. That might be kind of research heavy compared to the normal nail polish content.

      Second this ! There’s so much info and fake information in regards to what’s safe, cruelty free in the polish etc. and some companies have flat out lied. I let my natural nails grow and most of the polish I’ve tried damages them to a point i never paint them 😢

      If you do decide to do a video about this and come across the EWG website or anything while researching, be careful with them because they have a history of being inconsistent and basing their claims on shaky research.

    I decided to check out what the 21 “ingredients” were and here are some examples:
    #17: synthetic fragrance - is fragrance used in nail polish regularly, I doubt it but I’m not sure.
    #18: Animal Cruelty - not an ingredient by any definition.
    #19: Silicones: as far as I know the only reason people worry about this is because some silicones weighs some people’s hair down in hair products. I can’t think of why it would be a concern for nails.
    #20: Gluten - why would this be in nail polish?
    #21: Sulfates - this is the type of ingredient in a lot of soap and cleaning products that make it foam. The main concern with them is that some types are too harsh of a cleaning agent. I can think of no reason why it would be used in nail polish.
    It’s stuff like this that makes me wary of “clean” beauty brands.

      Many nail polishes (and other cosmetic products) contain wheat protein or similar things which contain gluten.
      For a normal user, it's not an importnant thing. If you are highly allergic to it, it can lead to bad situations.

The entertainment industry is obsessed with fairer skin tones, which brighter reds (e.g. O·P·I®/Wella Nail Lacquer P/N NLN25 "Big Apple Red") would complement. Really nicely done review! When you said that it applies as smoothly as any standard nail polish, a little alarm bell went off in my head, so I went to the nails inc website, picked a Plant Power polish, and read the ingredient list. Ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, nitrocellulose, adipic acid/neopentyl glycol/trimlitic anhydride copolymer, acetal tributyl citrate, alcohol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, stearalkonium bentonite, trimethylsiloxisylicate, isopropyl alcohol, phosphoric acid, benzoguanamine, caprylic/capric triglyceride, sucrose acetate isobutyrate, etc., a familiar enough list for those of us obsessive enough to have memorized some of these chemical names. Like almost all chemicals used in nail polish, these ingredients can mostly be traced back to some sort of plant or mineral origin, but to call this a “plant-based” polish seems a bit of a stretch. (Honestly I was hoping for some sort of magical soy polymer in a water or alcohol base.) The good news is that pretty much any standard 5-free or 7-free polish will have the exact same list of chemical ingredients as this one, so buy what you like and don’t pay a premium for what amounts to a big marketing gimmick. The bad news is that (sigh) no one has actually come up with a decent plant-based nail polish formula that lives up to the hype yet.

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  2 роки тому +4

      I was under the impression that the ingredients are the "same", but they're sourced from plants rather than synthetic chemicals - I could be wrong about that though! Are the ingredients different in other plant based formulas? I've found that all plant based brands I've tried worked very well!

    • @kearinarmstrong
      @kearinarmstrong 2 роки тому +7

      I would add to this that if the ingredients are extracted from plants there may be more processing required (and possibly more intermediate chemicals needed to refine) than a synthetic version so it’s important to be careful of assuming that ‘plant based’ is better by default

  • @sgsummerisle

    If you ever ask, "Should I review xyz?" I'm gonna say yes cause I want your opinion (and swatch) of EVERY polish ever xD And I think you should make the polish chemical video because even just my immediate friends and family ask me that all the time xD It would be a really good resource and I bet you could make a very clickworthy title.
    I have a very similar style to you, and dress very close to how I wanted to look in the late nineties/early 2000s xD The only difference is I used to be more into goth glamour, but now I'm more into goth grunge/biker goth kind of looks. I try to stay kind of understated, but also be the kind of person where people are like, "Ah, that person has a style."
    I feel like you balance your look very well. There are some youtubers who look kind of jarring in their thumbnails, and that's definitely a cool choice, but you always look approachable yet cool.

    Thanks for yet another detailed and much appreciated video. I actually bought one of their sets last week and really loved the 1 coat full coverage and the 15 second top coat, not sure if someone else mentioned it but if you put the cap on it’s side it’s a place holder for your finger and there’s a way to try on the polish before painting too but I can’t think of how to describe it in words I seen the owner on HSN explain it. I personally think the brush is the best I’ve used to date and I love the formula mainly because I suffer from severe allergies to numerous chemicals so I can’t use any gel or acrylate products and it’s hit or miss if I have an allergic outbreak from a Polish. So far I’m good with the colors I’ve tried definitely going to try a few more so adding them to my ever growing wish list there’s just so many beautiful colors to try and not enough days. I too change my polish every 2-3 days it’s just soooo much fun!!

There is a beautiful apple green called Mother Earths Calling , a turquoise blue called Just Avoca- Do it , Soul Surfing is a gorgeous Periwinkle Blue that I have . There is a beautiful Gold Shimmer polish in the Dont Stop Be -Leafing duo that comes with a deep leaf green cream & they have just released an iridescent white polish Glowing Somewhere . They do a great black & a white polish in their 45 second Speedy Gloss range that are both full coverage in one coat for me
    Hopefully all these gems will be available over the pond soon xxx

    I wish brands would get on biodegradability, even though that's always relative, but I've seen 'green' nail polish formulas with polyethylene, and microplastics are a pretty big pollution issue. Obviously most nail polish ingredients aren't appropriate for compost, but some are worse than others, and some are just fine. AZO dyes (like red 5) are petroleum based, but break down well in soil with just normal soil bacteria, in studies.

    As someone who was a teen in the late 90s in Seattle, I declare you not only Kellimo, but honorary alt-grunge.
    My standard outfit back then was jeans or black leggings, a band tee shirt, flannel & a leather jacket. Cardigans when it’s cold. Jewelry was optional but usually silver and black, with studded belts & collars.
    History lesson;
    That’s really just the way people in the northwest dressed. Not everyone. Wealthy people had their own style & as hip hop grew in the mid 90s, it’s fashion followed. But most working class adults & the young people into rock /pop/even country music. A combination of the logging history, economic depression and (most significantly) the weather.
    At the time, glam metal was big so when you looked at nirvana or Alice In Chains it was dramatically different than poison or Motley Crue. They weren’t made up, they just dressed like they would if they weren’t on stage.
    It was called “rocker” occasionally but wasn’t really thought of as fashion. When a surge of northwest bands got big, it pretty quickly became known as “grunge”.
    The style was accompanied by a deeper lyrical substance than many of the popular bands at that time, which is probably responsible for the success. There was a lot of fluff (sex/drugs/rock n roll) & these bands were a little darker & cynical, and angsty, so they tapped into something gen x had been missing.
    But “grunge” really isn’t a musical genre, it’s more a time period with a central location. Like San Francisco hippies. As grunge spread outside the northwest it began being called “alternative”.
    For generations of my family, flannel was standard. In fact, in 2016 my dad died. My self, mom, sister, brother, husband & niece each took one of his flannels to remember him by.
    Jeans were ripped through wear & the inability to just by another pair meant it became acceptable to wear ripped jeans. When “grunge” got big I remember seeing some higher end department stores advertising flannel shirts & pre-ripped jeans for literally 10 times the usual cost.
    I regularly had purple streaks in my hair. I was never big on makeup but when I wore it it would have been classified “goth” style. I gave up the leather on moral grounds but I’ve been thinking of getting one since there are much better fake leathers these days.
    What amazes me is that my 16 year old niece is usually in ripped jeans, a flannel & band tee shirt. Studded belt, pocket chain, pink streaks in her hair. Just this month (oct 2021) she turned 16 & got a nose stud. If I could just transplant her back in time 30 years, she’d go insane without her phone, but no one would have a second thought about her style. Beyond asking who 21 pilots are.
    I think Kelli would fit in perfectly too. Grunge lives on!
    Emo was a little later &, at least in my circle, was a less dramatic version of goth. It was associated with the Cure musically & a kinda mopey, bleak outlook. It’s meaning has changed, I know, but when I hear the term “emo” my first thought is still dreariness & of miserable, dejected teens in all black. Not at all Kelli. I’m claiming her as grunge 🤣😂

      Also Ash-wood as an ingredient is not a very sustainable choice since it's a hardwood that is getting more and more endangered. Sometimes the synthetic ingredients might be more ecologically sustainable especially if they are a sideproducts from some industry and would otherwise go to waste. I also hope that nothing edible is used in these plant-based products because that would just be insane 😂

    Interesting video, thanks Kelli! I wonder if the industry will ever get to a point where refills become more of a thing, if consumers are interested enough, and if it will even make enough of an impact? Granted large commercial enterprises are the biggest problem we have. This is just me assuming, but I get the feeling that most people throw out bottles entirely, and a smaller percentage of people probably try to recycle what they can. As a quick example, I go through one bottle of Cirque's "Hedonist" a year. I would gladly clean out and keep the same bottle, cap and brush, if I could just refill it with polish. I don't know if there'll ever be a good solution, but I'd like to see the industry try more things.

    LOL about your confusion about the names. They're a British company, so their reference points can be way different than that of Americans. Brits also tend to have weird puns and rhyming slang going on with everything. So I'm pretty sure that "What's Your Spirituality?" is a snarky send up of "What's your sexuality?" I know I've heard the "Spiritual Gangster" thing in my British TV/film forays, but I can't remember exactly where right now. I almost have the reference for "Swear by Salutation," but it's one of those things that squirms away when I get close to figuring it out. It'll come to me a week or two from now, and I'll feel stupid for not making the immediate connection.
    As for the colors, I love the blues and that taupe-beige is outstanding. I'm not fond of the rest, but that's my personal taste, nothing wrong with any of the colors, really. If they're your thing. They're just not mine.

    They're a UK brand, so I think the names aren't that odd to a Brit, maybe. None of them stood out to me as weird, anyway. I counted 23 of these on Nail Polish Direct's website, including a very bright green. I might have to give them a go. I've not (yet) found anyone doing reviews of UK brands so it's really hard to see swatches before buying.

    Now I haven't tried their plant formula but I did get some Nails Inc a few months ago from Sally Beauty! Honestly I like them aside from the thermal I bought which doesn't thermal at all. Pretty shade but zero color shifting. The others are fun, I tried some scented ones, some shimmers and even some textured!

      You can also see what a colour will look like on by placing the bottle on top of your nail and the concave base will make it appear you are wearing the colour.

    Hello.
    I like Nails Inc., when I found them really cheap, I went for it.
    I tried the Plant Power and the only difference I found, it's the smell(at this point I bet it's a fragrance they added, nothing new on the solvents front). If I checked the ingredients and compare it to other of their formulas, I wouldn't have bothered to try this one. As the host pointed out, the "free from" are used often as marketing when popular names go around, also when the product doesn't normally have the infamous substance.
    Keep rumbling about Nails Inc., if they were committed to "sustainability", they would have change all the plastic where they could, they have being around for awhile, so I don't think they are still finishing the other stock. Like other brands, once the "better for us" is being trailed and well received, why not use only that one?
    Another thing that I like to nag about/point out, they advertise they are very special, their colour don't separate, true to bottle in one coat, etc. when they have the same issue as other brands on the same price range or lower. Their once "caviar top coat, now retinol" since Vegan is trending and posh caviar doesn't impress( it did nothing for my 2 flaky nails😮‍💨that's all I want)
