Was in a 6 ft trench. Broken pelvis and sacrum when I was 20 years old 8 years ago. Very lucky. Didn’t have safety equipment. Take the time to prepare. It’s worth it

Thank you Alix for your advice and insist. For anyone who is doing a Laborer Job on a Ditch trench. If the supervisor or OWNERS starts YELLING at you to get in Ditch, over 4 feet. With NO protection (trench box) or even 2 × 6 up and down boards, with 2 × 4 cross bracing. WALK OFF the Job. QUIT Right then. Your life is more important than the scummy company (and there are many) that don't use SHORING. It's a company you want to stay away from. Please Just Leave the JOB if the clown's in charge don't care about shoring up a ditch. I have seen this my whole life, with a supervisor who just cares about the timeline, and could NOT care a red penny about YOU the person who has to get in Ditch. We as Labor people have to start just LEAVING job sites.

Totally agree, I have not worked construction. But I have worked for a few residential tree companies and the ones who did not care about safety were extremely dangerous and their job sites were a ticking time bomb.
You have to know when to walk away before you end up in the hospital trying save the bosses ass on a low bid.

2 of 3 got home from pipe work, sat down in front of tv news to see 2 guys pulled out of a trench. " I recognize his ass". My bro. His back at 73 is still so bad. The other guy had a pipe float up and slowly break a leg bone.

My grandfather was working on the installation of a sewer line in small town Ontario. Late 40s, pick and shovel Operation. The trench collapsed on him. In the excitement of the moment a fellow worker dinged him in the forehead with a pick axe. Lived, sported a dent between the eyes for the rest of his long life. Lucky, blessed, not his time. There is no reason to be in a trench without protection.

My dad was in a cone crusher (around 00-06) involved in a collapse of material. About 1,000+ pounds pushed into his knee. Doctors wouldn't do surgery due to his age.
    This issue includes crushers too.
    Thanks guys.

Not sure why this video came up in my list but back in 1988 I was a pipe layer for a local underground company. We were putting in a lift station in what was to be a new domed football stadium. The 20 ft hole was dug down for the stadium floor then below that we needed to put a lift station. So another 25ft deep hole was dug. They would lower me down in the excavator bucket. I would jump out take the grade then jump back in. We set the base and the concrete catch basin one at a time lowering me down in the hole. No trench box and not much for gradually digging up the sides for safety. I was 20 years old and felt invincible so I just said ok. There is no way in hell you would get me down there today. I don't remember having trench nightmares over this but I had them during other projects. Waking up in the middle of the night with the nightmare of a trench caving in on me.

It’s no joke, I got buried ten feet under the ground completely and was rescued, digging a sewer in providence RI, with 20 years experience

3 of 3 Oldy story.3 decades ago(or more). on BBC a weekly show called UEO, Unexploded Ordinance. Set in England, WW2. 10% of bombs did not detonate. Rank and file would dig down and expose the bomb. So engineer officers could defuse them. Diffusing sometimes took time. The shoring in damp old England had to be right.

Took me alot of searching to find a trench safety video from real people rather than osha, sad that there apparently are none in this macho construction culture today. Kind of weird as I come more from the carpentry side of things and there are tons of real videos on ladder or tool safety.
