  • It has been a very challenging spring thus far in Eastern Ontario with extreme weather delays to planting. Conditions are less than ideal and there have been many discussions locally about whether we'll be ahead mudding in the corn vs waiting until things improve likely in June. A challenging question for sure.
I visited a good friend of mine to film his first day of planting on some clay soils. The top of greyed off but in places below was still a bit tacky. Derks Farms uses a T9390 to pull their custom built Monosem 24 row corn planter outfitted with a 9ton montag high output cart for starter. The planter is HEAVY, tracks are required to help the centre of the large tool bar float on the soil. I was surprised but the 390hp tractor is actually a bit underpowered for this planters immense hydraulic load. This corn planter was built in 2013 and it was actually a twin row machine up until this spring when the farm decided to strip it down to a single row planter siting maintenance costs of twin rows. They feel they'll miss the twins in soybeans but are confident in 30" corn.
Thanks to Derks Farms for letting me ride around and film their first day of planting. I'm hoping to be in the fields soon but the forecast needs to begin to cooperate.

We see a lot of Monosems in our area for planting twin row peanuts. Good planters. That outside right planter unit might need some attention. looks like it is digging in for some reason. Might just be a row cleaner issue.

It was completely jammed with mud. It was fixed after that pass. We have Deere planters on the farm so this was my first time tearing down a monosem unit. I wasn't very impressed. Very hard to work on.

Why is it plowing a dud furrow with that outside row ...it's almost looks like it's strip tilling

It was plugged solid with mud. Marginal conditions.

@@loony2oon thanks. Haven't flown in almost 3 years. Still a bit shaky but will improve with practice.
