It's 2003. I'm in middle school and I just found out what anime was. I get my first Shonen Jump. My dad asks how I'm almost done, and I tell him that the book is Japanese so it reads right to left. He scoffs and says "They're teaching you how to read wrong" Fast forward a year. I decide to get this magazine at Borders called Newtype USA that has an image of what I thought were characters from .hack//sign (it was the June 2004 that highlighted .hack// Legend of the Twilight). Chrono Crusade is highlighted in one of the articles. Being a repressed Catholic child who enjoys shoot-em-ups, I take interest. Shortly after, I get my first manga. It's the first volume of Chrono Crusade. I absolutely love it. I hope for an anime someday. I continue to read the manga. An author insert mentions that they are currently working on an anime. I have absolutely no idea that production in Japan had already finished back when I got my first volume. Christmas 2007. I put the box set on my Christmas list. Maybe jokingly, because I didn't expect to get it. But what's this? Mom found the full set at Best Buy somehow. I'm ecstatic with joy. I watch the first episode and am completely floored. I finally got to see an episode instead of reading the manga. The ending credits roll, and I'm filled with so much joy that something I wanted since before I was a teen was finally happening now. I'm not going to say that it's the best anime out there. But it's always going to hold a special place in my heart as one of the first that I ever really fell in love with. Nowadays, I'll watch it from time to time and think maybe certain parts didn't age well, or I liked other parts because I was younger then. But it still holds a special place in my heart. I still have the box set in storage somewhere. This song works so well as an ending, and even today really hits hard. It's so incredibly heartfelt and the artists do a great job at executing it. Their performance in this video is fantastic - I wish I could have been there.
Thanks for sharing your story. This makes it more of an experience for even me just waking by. Only got to know this song months ago through a recommend since I watch Kajiura's live videos. This song has always been somehow emotional. Love the repeated phrase harmonized by the two ladies on both sides in the live (Yuriko Kaida abs Kaori Oda).
My favourite line in the song...I think this phrase could be translated as something like: I am glad I was born into the same earth/place that lead/connected me to you; although I think you can also translate it as: I was glad to be born on the same earth/place that connects/leads me to you. But then again, my japanese is not that good yet, so if you have a better translation, do let me know. :D Thanx 4 the upload. Wish I could see these talented crew of amazing performers live someday.
Yuki wrote the SAO music too. And Saeko Chibo performed them for the anime. I think Saeko and Yuki ate partners on anime music the way Yoko and ORIGA were.
Watching this again, I notice a couple of additional things: 1. For the refrain, Kaori sang the high melody while Yuriko sang the low harmony to her. That was nice to hear since we know it's easy for Kaori to go high in that range. 2. Keiko's solo (Verse) was brighter in tone than Kaori's solo verse (she acted the lyrics better). 3. At the end, Yuriko didn't hold her hand up to indicate when the vocal lines should cease like she often does, she just dropped her dynamics and let the voice float away.
At 2:20, Keiko starts to tug at her skirt, as if this song has some special meaning for her. I'm dying to know what she was thinking during that part of the song.
I swear they need to perform this song again. I don't think this version can be largely bested but it'd be nice to see how their vocal techniques have improved over the years. It'd be better if they can redistribute the lines to accommodate Joelle too.
