What's also amazing is how these ordinary unmodified Hasselblad cameras can survive the temperatures and radiation on the moon. They didn't know it back then but the moon is a big radioactive rock. Generated by powerful, dynamic forces at the center of our world, our magnetosphere shields us from erosion of our atmosphere by the solar wind (charged particles our Sun continually spews at us), erosion and particle radiation from coronal mass ejections (massive clouds of energetic and magnetized solar plasma and radiation), and cosmic rays from deep space. Our magnetosphere plays the role of gatekeeper, repelling this unwanted energy that’s harmful to life on Earth, trapping most of it a safe distance from Earth’s surface in twin doughnut-shaped zones called the Van Allen Belts. The moon, however, does not have this protection.
Temperatures on the moon are quite extreme and when sunlight hits the moon's surface, the temperature can reach 260 degrees Fahrenheit (127 degrees Celsius). When the sun goes down, temperatures can dip to minus 280 F (minus 173 C).
Yet the film inside the camera wasn't affected by the intense heat and radiation on the moon.
Not to mention it didn't affect the astronauts who walked unprotected on the moon.

Also amazing is that NASA sent 7 unmanned spacecraft to the moon in the years before Apollo that measured the light, temperatures, radiation, soil depth, and many many other variables.
And yet we are to believe NASA just got lucky with Apollo. They must have ignored all their expensive data.
Temperatures on the moon's surface are quite extreme (sometimes)! As we know from the unmanned missions before Apollo and the ASLAP science packages left behind by Apollo. It's a mystery how the cameras and film could have survived the extream surface temperatures. Perhaps the cameras and film were not buried in the surface dirt?
With a day on the moon only lasting 708 hours, is it possible NASA sent the Apollo missions to the moon at a time of day between the extreme temperatures?
Also NASA cheated by building a huge amount of insulation into the space suits. The best insulation known to man, vacuum. They wrapped the space suit in it. (cheating)
Why didn't the astronauts photograph themselves walking unprotected on the moon? Bare naked astronauts would have made for some fun photos. In the pics I've seen they are wearing spacesuits that included 5 layers of BoPET. Very effective radiation mitigation...

The Hasselblad bodies on the moon are beyond repair.

Nice job on including the reason for discarding the bodies and lenses... everyone leaves that part out. The custom backs that were produced were loaded with 70 mm film so that they could achieve the large amount of frames per back.
If I were Elon Musk... I wouldn't strive for Mars... I would head for the Moon for those Blad bodies and lenses... LOL.
Thanks for the vid... I love the history and I have a decendant of the Moon Camera... a Hasselblad 500elx... cheers.

Thanks Blaine. I totally agree! If I had Musk kind of money I’d be going back to the moon in a heartbeat and quietly bring back the best looking Hassy I could find!

So can you explain how they took the lander launch films? What was used and how was the film collected after launch?!

I could be wrong but I think they had a camera mounted to the lunar rover?

There is no reason that the lunar missions can not used a camera with an IMX678 sensor (starvis 2).
Only the containment case needs be adapted for an action camera.
Action Cameras have been sent to edge of space in weather balloons.
They perform fine in a near vacuum and in the cold so long as they are operating.

Didn't NASA also use Nikons (F3?) at some point too?
