  • Starting delphiniums from seed is one of the ways to expand your collection. Not only is it easy to collect the seed, it can be fun to. One of the best parts is you never know what your going to get when you plant them out. Give seed collecting a try.

I started some delphiniums this spring., first time trying them., I put them in the ground a little late due to garden not being prepped in time, and they haven’t done much. Do they focus mostly on roots the first year? Any advice for promoting them this year would be great. I have them in morning sun, midafternoon and evening shade., I’m not against moving them if they do better in full sun... just may need to prep more beds. 😜
Also, these pods are very similar to columbines.
I’ve been collecting those seeds. I find they are awesome for wooded, shade areas. And They do really well in full shade and full sun.
    Thousands. 👍🏻

If you can add some cow manure to enrich the soil. Feed with tomato feed, and water heavy once a week or as needed should do the trick. Usually the more sun the better depending where you live.

Loving your videos! Do you have any advice for whether to deadhead/cut back delphiniums after blooming or wait until it's completely done blooming to collect the seeds?

Happy your enjoy my videos. You don’t have to fully wait. As soon as you see the seed heads forming 1/4-1/2 way up the flower spike they start at the bottom, turn upside down into a brown paper bag and wait.

Wait until they turn brown so you ensure that you’ll have a higher germination rate.

Thanks, I appreciate. You can almost start seed at anytime. I typically store seed in the refrigerator, and start indoors the middle of January, but February, March will work just as well.
