- How important is it to ensure an engine is getting clean air? In this video, you'll see first hand the damage that can be caused by dirt getting into the engine through the air intake. The engine gets disassembled at the end of this video for a look at the damage.

I would like to see you do this test again, but instead of dispensing the dirt directly down the carb with a spoon, throw it into a shop fan that's in front of the engine so the engine sucks in a more real-world dirty air. I'm curious if the dirt covering the cooling fins will change the engine's mode of failure, or if itt'l last a little longer that way.
Obviously itt'l still die, that's a given.
I'd also like to see you get a tach hooked up to one of these engines, bypass the governor, and show us just how fast these things can turn until they go Kerbal on us. I'm betting somewhere around 5500-6000RPM is when the rod lets go.
TestECull iget your post... 8000 is possible with mods... i think the channel mr midshipman modified a predator engine this way (predator= honda clone) its done for racing though....
I agree with this. I'd like to see the test repeated, but as a bunch of dirt and sand dispersed in a "cloud" such as by a fan, which would better simulate how it would typically happen in the real world. Probably won't straight out kill the engine, but even a loss of 5-10 PSI would be a fascinating test result and very informative for those who run engines of any kind without a filter.
This is a terrific idea! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
I wanted to give you moar thumbs up for a Kerbal reference, but have moar boosters instead... Or struts... Your choice! :P
Good idea. If you wanna keep the mess semi contained, maybe set up the mower and fan inside an enclosed space... Airflow at the top to circulate oxygen, but fans around to create a cyclone of dust and dirt within the space.

Effects of running a cold engine hard immediately after starting it.
Yea if he could find an old car for cheap and just blow it up like that itd be dope
If it's cold enough out it will cold seize
I dont think it'll show much, this causes damage in the long run rather than after a few runs. Engine problems usually develop later on in their life when they've been run cold and hard a lot
@@Jake_Hynds maybe if it's running very watered down antifreeze (or straight water...amazingly, some people try). Another test I would LOVE to see is for you to overheat the engine severely by disabling the engine's cooling system perhaps by cutting the flywheel fins off to simulate a coolant loss. I predict severe ring and cylinder wall damage and maybe a warped head.

I can tell you from the days I used to cut lawns for people when I was a kid air cools b &s engines are tough I over heated my mower from cutting deep grass at wot (I had a manual throttle no Governor for more power) once it cooled it fired back up they are pretty under stressed engines.

What about hydro-locking an engine? Having the engine run at med to high rpm and pouring water into the carb. I had a 2.2L GMC Sonoma break 2 rods when it sucked water into the enigine.
Nathan, Great suggestion! This is a real-world possibility as you experienced! Thanks for watching the video and the great suggestion!
I don't think it gonna break a rod on a mower as the blade has not enough inertia to do this work
I've seens some engines blow the top of when they sucked in water.
That would be interesting :)
awesomefacepalm, Wow! This could be very interesting! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
I think that a mower's engine will take quite a bit to get damaged from hydrolocking.
It would have been great to see if a product like engine restorer, BG EPR, or cerma engine treatment could bring back the compression in an engine that badly damaged.

"Small amount" lol you just put 4 spoons of sand and dirth 😂😂😂
lol. Thank you
I'm surprised one didn't kill it.
Not sure I feel this was accurately tested. I understand it is somewhat scaled down. But comparing such a small cylinder with a teaspoon of dirt seems like throwing a cup of dirt into a cars intake. That and it's literally pouring in, not really broken up into the air or tossed around an air box. Maybe put same mix into paint sprayer, make a faux airbox. And re-test. The amount of wear you put on the engine was just out scale in my opinion. If a full size engine was exposed to the amount dumped into the mower it would take quite a while to amount to that, there would likely have been an oil change or additives added at some point depending on the owner. My two cents, have a good one
Scott, Great point! Thanks for watching the and commenting!
Scott Donaldson i was thinking the same thing. It's a great video, BTW, but not very realistic in terms of scale. Much more sand than a car engine would take in at a time, and much too small of a cylinder to scale to a car engine … wonder what would happen if you took the same test to say, a motorcycle engine or something.
Scott Donaldson you obviously dont live down a 15 mile dirt road like me. Air filter is dirty as hell every 1000 miles. To me. This is a very accurate test.
Tzorb so sorry, forgot how many of the general public live down a 15 mile dirt road.

I recently changed the air filter on my 2020 Toyota Camry LE , four cyclinder 2.5 liter engine . I had a Purolatoir filter and had sprayed it with PuraClean Filter Spray , allowed to dry and installed . It is used for furnance filters to attract / catch more dirt . I had contacted the company and asked about using it on a vehicle's air filter , they said sure . The filter had been in for 3 months and I compared it to a new one . Definitely a big difference and changed this time to a WIX , made in South Korea . Very noticeable improvement in acceleration and smoothness . I had usually left air filters in for 6 months , but as you said they are to collect / stop dirt from getting into the engine . So now to replace filter 4 times a year at a cost of $120.00 .

There was something personal between him and this lawnmower
Funny!
The lawnmower slept with his wife behind his back.
I wonder if ultra fine particles would actually provide a polishing effect? The ones that would pass through a dirty air cleaner?
Great point.
I've watched an expert tuner assemble a brand new engine, and he "lubricated" the camshaft with a very fine paste, to actually make it polish itself for a perfect fit on the contact surfaces, to reduce future wear.
that is what happens, in the diesel world we call it dusting. fixed low hour engine 1500 hours (factory rated life time of 10,000 hours before rebuild). i was in this engine replacing a cylinder head, because a rocker bridge guide worked loose. the rocket bridge guide was pressed into the water jacket so coolant got in the oil. i messed up and left a clamp loose, fine dirt in the air was sucked though into the engine for 40 hours.
engine started with i assume (after repairing many of this engine) with close to .002"-.005" cylinder ware. and a visible crosshatch on the bore.
end result was a bore that was worn .014" over sized, pistons worn down an unknown amount. you could see the ring gap with piston at the bottom of it stroke (were the most cylinder ware happens)
40 hours of sucking a metered amount of talc powder
You don't want the cylinder walls to be polished. New engines have a slight cross hatching pattern ground into them.
@@rubiconnn exactly ,that is how a good seal by the rings is attained (the piston should never come into contact with the bores and good rings and a oil film does that- Once the bores are glazed and shiny a lower compression ratio exist with loss of power ,possible piston slap and oil usage.

I will never get rid of my air filter on my vehicle. Of that took 15 minutes and my engine is much bigger it will take longer but that is much more damage that will be caused by the dirt that gets into my engine. I really appreciate what you do.

Really enjoy your tests. This one "does" seem to have an obvious conclusion after dumping dirt and sand directly into the carb but may also be a bit misleading. To explain, I also watched your air filter shootout (Which Car Air Filter is Best? Let's find out! Fram, K&N, Wix, Purolator, & AC Delco showdown - UA-cam) and the conclusion of that one is somewhat based on this project, or vice versa, it would seem. You gave the K&N a very poor rating but in reality, it would not let any of what you dumped into that mower through. That's an idea for another test, by the way. Use your filter test set up and, if you can even see it, take what is left of your "death mix" after going through the K&N and dump "THAT" into the carb of an unsuspecting mower. Do the same for the WIX. My guess is there will be none of that sand mixture getting through and what does will be so small it will be difficult to even collect and ultimately have no affect on the engine. Keep in mind, anything less than 40-50 microns is invisible to the naked eye. Also, that mixture you dumped likely represents >500K miles of contamination if driven normally without a filter. I believe the K&N is a much better value since it is re-usable and actually becomes more efficient with use. In your test you increased the ET of your farm truck by >1 sec over the next fastest filter; in a fairly short distance. In my viper or my motorcycle I would expect even greater time differences. The savings in gas alone, due to better air flow, will pay for an engine rebuild by the time any microscopic particles that manage to get through do any damage. It's also rated for a million miles of use. And I can always use Seafoam to clean heads periodically if I get worried in the interim. Again, the savings in gas and air filter replacements would easily pay for it. I also suspect that you would see increased carbon deposits on the pistons/heads if your engine is running rich due to reduced air flow before any affect of what gets by the K&N is observed. Drivers/Riders have sworn by K&N's for 50 years when racing the Baja in Mexico. They can't afford a breakdown in the desert or potentially destroying their very expensive engines. I have NEVER seen any signs of anything on the "clean" side of any of my K&N filters. If I can't see it I'm not worried about it. Which filter is best? That depends on how one defines "Best". IMO, best must consider much more than how small the particles are that get through.
Conclusion: Based on your conclusion of the K&N I think your obsessing over how clean the air has to be. Please prove me wrong.
