  • In the USA, many people are working 2 or more jobs and still living below the poverty line. Families are forced to move their children between motels and city campsites, always afraid of losing the next job - these are the 'working poor'.
Around 15% of the US population live below the poverty line. Since the economic crisis of 2009, over nine million jobs have been created in America. Officially, the recession is over. But American workers have come out of the crisis more vulnerable and even poorer than ever. Meet the people behind America’s economic recovery.
Germania has two minimum wage jobs, working 18 hours a day. Three-quarters of her salary goes on paying for the 15m square motel room she shares with her two children and her mother-in-law. But even with two jobs, she struggles to buy food for her family. In the past four months, they have stayed in five motels, moving every few weeks to ever-cheaper rooms as their money runs out.
Joe and Chelsie live with their two young daughters in a tent in a church car park. Their bathroom is a porta-potty they share with 50 other people. Around 500 families in Seattle live in these temporary camps. Like Germania, Chelsie works full time but she can no longer afford to live in the city she works in.
Trade Union leader, Scott Slawson, has worked for General Electric for 13 years. But a few days ago, he was told his job will be re-located to a state with no wages and 50% lower salaries. He doesn’t know if he will be able to find another job.
This documentary was produced by Babel Press and directed by HÉLÈNE ECKMANN. It was first released in 2016.

Depends on the 3-rd world country in question - some poor countries are very bad cuz tax rates are high despite the low income, but in some you can live normally with a very low wage because income taxes are really low too. Like for example in Bolivia the income and sales tax are twice lower than the corporate tax. Not the case in reaganist monopoly worshiping America though - the income tax is twice as high as the corporate tax. Basically they tax the poor the most, and wonder why more people are getting poor? Its ridiculous!

I second what luiza alieva said. I needed 3 jobs to keep a roof and food only basic needs are extortionate and wages are low. A full time minimum wage job at 40 hours a week is a few hundred less after tax than the cost of a 1 bedroom apartment in most the country.
So we need job 2 to cover part of the rent, and transportation, maybe healthcare and a third one for anything like food or emergencies.
There is no social help, no matter what many Americans will get on here and lie about, many of them have been privileged and watch Fox News but never had to apply for anything, so they assume there is help.
I ended up living in my car with two small kids I was pleading to government offices before it happened, I was also employed with 2 jobs as a divorced parent. The state said ok we will help with the cost of healthcare and give you some help with food only. However none of that pays the bills or keeps a roof.
So me a 4 and 6 year old were camping, to survive, I got out 6 years ago and never looked back.

It is becoming tough to find middle-class paying jobs, even for people with a college education and experience. The requirements for good-paying jobs are often so high, that very few are qualified for such positions. The companies need to create more full-time entry-level professional positions.

Here in Upstate New York many low skilled jobs are starting in the $16 plus per hour range, and some employers are offering benefits and bonuses to part-time workers due to severe labor shortages
Our cost of living is magnitudes lower than NYC and other states
We have a healthcare plan called The Essential Plan, a zero premium healthcare plan for those that don't qualify for Medicaid
As a single worker I could make $27,000 per year before I'd have to pay a dime for coverage
One of the downsides is that some of our public assistance benefits are so liberal that workers will purposely keep their reported incomes at, or below thresholds, especially those receiving housing subsidies, as once they lose them they may never get them back due to closed waiting lists

It gets old and you get very tired of it. Sometimes it just to get by, sometimes it’s to save to get ahead… BUT what people don’t realize is that saved money can be gone in an instant if you get stuck with a medical problem and medical bills from it. What I learned is working all those hours is not worth it. You lose time, and that’s something you never get back.

I'm heartbroken to see the situation depicted in this documentary. And I am so sorry for all who have to endure such insecurity. I was born and live in Slovakia - a young democratic country where everyone is being taken care of by the state. As for the middle class, no one is left on his own when people get into difficult life situations; the parents with children are specially protected by the social system. The healthcare is provided by the state; it's basically for free. You are deducted an amount of money for healthcare insurance, social security, and taxes from the salary. You do not have to be worried about getting ill, etc. I feel safe in Slovakia. It's not America, but, honestly, I would not stand to live in insecurity every day. Slovakia is not perfect, but it's a safe place to live. Hugs to everyone who has to come in such a way in the greatest country in the world. You do not deserve that.

Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future. Putting our time and effort in activities and investments that will yield a profitable return in the future is what we should be aiming for. So I got a technical career working in cars and started making around $15 to $20 an hour. I moved from FL because it was too expensive, went to live with my mom for a while since grandma was sick, then moved out of California and my mom's once I got married and a kid was coming. We moved to TX and transferred my new postal job career to San Antonio. California was way too expensive even in 2011. Now we are doing much better with around $96k take home pay. So we are middle class. It wasn't easy. Lots of hard work and long hours like the first girl in this video. My advantage was that I didn't have kids until I was more settled (around 30). That helped me move up quicker and I got out of those low paying jobs ASAP. With crazy inflation, it's even harder now! I commend the girl for those long hours, but she's not getting paid well 😢. That sucks! I'm humble and no bragging here. Where's the father of these 3 babies? Is he helping at all? No child support? Just try not to have kids when you are coming up. That would be my advice. Here in Australia we get free healthcare, financial support long term for families, parenting payments, single parent, jobseekers, disability, low income families get ongoing financial support and it's not only for short term.
    Better minimum wages here too.
I know I am blessed here and it really angers me that the American government doesn't do this for all their citizens. The issue is here in USA, is the fact that handouts crest dependency.
We gave the Indians land that the government took from them and call in the Indian reservation. There are hundreds of these reservations across America.
The government started giving the monthly income and when they turn 18 they get an “inheritance” so to speak from the US government. Around $20k
They used to be hard working people. They used to be people to lived in unity. Fast forward to today, (I know this because my husband lived for 1.5 years on an Indian reservation and saw it first hand) while it’s not everyone, a lot of them live with alcoholism and junk everywhere. Some houses have dirt floors, and on the first of the month, they would line up at the post office to pick up their check that is sent to them. The grocery store would be empty. They BECAME DEPENDENT upon that income and handouts.
The reservations have major issues and we see it a lot here in Arizona. There are several reservations and issues are far and wide.
When you give people things they don’t have to work for, they stop working.
      Look at covid.
People got more money from covid money vs going to work so they would even try to get a job. It became a huge problem. Companies would try to give out start up bonuses to lure to employees to their companies. It didn’t work. The US government had to stop the Covid pay for people to go back to work.
Some US people are lazy. 🤮 sad to say being I myself am a US citizen. Some take advantage of the system and it breaks it down for everyone.
To make a socialist economy like you describe, EVERYONE has to contribute.
Unfortunately there are people who once are given handouts, will then sit back and go for the ride. Sad really. Because it really would be so wonderful to live in a utopian society that you describe.

Bought my house cash, paid off 2 brand new cars & now retired w/ pension at 53 yrs old & hopefully receive SS in 8 yrs in addition to my pension. So now I just hangout w/ family or GF or put in a few hrs of easy low-stress work in the community. Anyways, all I was trying to say is these 3 things: 1)learn a marketable skill. 2)work hard & save $. 3)then delay marriage or kids for now. There's really nothing magical about it I think.

This country is so horribly broken and corrupt. Most people cant even afford to own a home, it's unreal how human life has been disregarded in the name of profit and greed. Anyone can fall victim to homelessness for a number of reasons: expensive medical emergencies, unable to afford rent/home (property tax increases), natural disaster and no insurance coverage, some other tragedy, job loss. I hold two STEM degrees (B.S., M.S.) and even I know I am at risk, many college grads will tell you the same/similar stories of how corporations treated them just like the guy who worked for GE in this documentary. All an apartment is to me is a slightly longer hotel stay where the neighbors don't change out quite as frequently and all "home ownership" seems to be is a 30-year lease on something technically you do hold value in, but there is no guarantee what that value will be/if you will make it and after it's paid for there are still property taxes. All this said, I'm not sure unions are the best answer but communities are going to lose their sense of self if they don't find a way to manage changes in revenue cycles without always having to increase costs of living. It's even worse for the elderly right now during this inflation crisis.

I was lucky to use what was left of 401k to buy land and put a camper on it. I had no running water. I hauled it in 55gal barrels. After a few yrs the county said I couldn't live in a camper. So I quit paying on that brand new camper and let it get repossessed and started pulling permits to turn a 12x20 rough sawn shed into something I could live in. I make only 25%of what I used to. I was in a low valley one time with 13$ to my name, broke down truck, the inverter in the camper was faulty and I felt completely hopeless. I turned to God. I asked for help. Having children before a stable source of income/career will do this. I grew up poor in the projects, I’m not perfect but that’s one thing I made sure never happened PREGNANCY unlike the rest of my peers they all got pregnant and basically stayed stagnant.
Get the education/skill/certs plus some experience on resume in your field before the kids!
This way no matter how hard life gets while your finding your way, you only worry about yourself it’s much easier that way.
Even after a career and divorce or separation you still hv that career you took time to build before the kids so you can still support them adequately after

She could get into social media marketing or sales in general at a nice boutique... she seems sweet and is pretty... or more high end restaurants with great tips... isn't there welfare for kids if the father doesn't pay? That way she could study and do a part-time job, so she get easier into better paid jobs

Some people do this and can't find work from their profession or related professions to it. I have literally seen this while working in restaurants. I do agree with you it's better to get an education first. Sometimes life really kicks you. Say like you are married with three kids and you have a career. All of a sudden your husband's been hiding some secret from you and gets arrested goes to prison. Now you're a single mom with three kids. Let's Pretend these kids are all under the age of five. Pretend you have twins that are 4 years old and a one-year-old. Daycare is outrageous. If you think that they are going to be quiet while you work at home think again. They're going to be extra upon extra. Then let's pretend you have no family support.

Salaries need to follow inflation, no matter what job you have. You need to be pay fairly. Our time has value, it doesn't matter if you are flipping burgers or if you are a lawyer. Both people are needed and both are investing their time on being productive and both are making the economy roll.
Paying someone under the minimum wage is slavery. It is criminal.

    • @royharper2003
      @royharper2003 2 роки тому

Salaries follow the skills required to do a job. You can't expect a burger flipper to get $50K a year when anyone can do it. Some places are replacing burger flippers with machines just as McDs are replacing cashiers with Kiosks where customers can place their own orders without interacting with anyone in the store. I saw a little kid putting an order in the other day but you think a cashier who has to have you repeat your order 3 or 4 times before they can finally comprehend it should make big bucks? Some of the inflation the US is experiencing now is due to the increase in minimum wages that went into effect at the beginning of the year.

@@royharper2003 if you work over 40hrs a week, no matter what job, it should pay you enough to live with dignity. Enough to pay your bills and your food. It doesn't make sense to work a full time job if it doesn't provide you the minimum to live.
Flipping burgers doesn't require big skills, but it requires the time of someone.
Besides that, how can we find fair that this big companies make giant profits by selling low quality food all over the world but they can't afford to pay a fair salary to their workers?
And I believe inflation has other justifications behind it. And it is not the miserable raise of the minimum wage, for sure.

I got sick for 3 months and lost everything. It is so easy to end up homeless. I am lucky that I was a young girl with no kids so ppl pity me so they gave me a couch to stay and a couple of bucks for food. I am happy that my health improved but I had to get a pay day loan to pay for a down payment for an apartment after struggling for 7 months. 3 years later I got a better apartment, a bed (I was sleeping on the floor for the longest) and can finally afford health insurance. I finished my bachelors degree and I'm preparing to be an overseas English teacher where my housing is guarantee and I can save up for a better life other than living pay check to pay check and living in apartments that raise rent every year.
