US President Donald Trump keeps talking about the “billions and trillions of dollars” that countries such as China will be paying his government in tariffs he imposes. In this monologue, Post managing editor for content, Yonden Lhatoo, explains why it does not work like that at all.

No. The problem is you are ignorant. This video literally is an idiots guide to terriffs. If china was the only other country willing to sell us these products then yes. We would theoretically have to pay the tarriffs ourselves as consumers. But in truth china isn't the only country willing to sell to the US. Let's say you go to Walmart before the tarriffs for a bicycle. The chinese bicycle is the cheapest at $100 and other bikes are a couple dollars more. If you add a 25% tarriff the chinese bike becomes more expensive and nobody buys from them anymore and instead gets the other bikes made in the US or elsewhere. THAT is why china made this video..not because they care about you and don't want to see you pay more. But because they are scared their cheap junk will be replaced because it will be forced to become expensive junk.

The problem is the US has a bunch of unqualified morons at the helm whose only talents are greed and grifting. Case in point, DOGE and its plans. The US is now paying more in interest on its national debt than it is to its balance.
“As I’ve written previously, the main culprit of soaring deficits is interest, which has overtaken military costs, running at over $1 trillion annually. David Rosenberg, eponym of Rosenberg Research, further pointed out that Medicare and Social Security alone account for 38% of total spending. The supposed $2 trillion in spending cuts set by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, headed by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, has targeted U.S. foreign aid (less than 1% of the budget) and high administrative costs of healthcare (caused by private insurance bureaucracy, not the government), he added in a client note on Friday.” Jan 31, 2025

To be honest, I really don't think he can. The world financial and currency system is based on the US dollars. For that reason, the USD will be higher than the Chinese Yuan and most other nations. For that, the production cost will almost always be much higher in the US. 10%, is not enough, 20% is not enough, 30% is not enough, maybe he can try a 50% tariff next year against China, but at the same time he needs to develop America's own product chains which will cost billions and billions of dollars, and it will likely take more than 4 years. The only chance I think he has is to shop from other developing nations instead of China, but that won't help US manufacturers. And the US citizens will still suffer from high inflation.

They ended up rolling those back because of how awful it was… Then Trump’s trade war with China in 2018. Economist agree, those hurt America. If the US becomes a walled tariff Garden, then all their raw materials for manufacturing will become significantly more expensive and their products become less competitive world wide. Yes, US companies certainly want to have the US market to themselves, but they'll lose the bigger world wide market. Ideally, to get around this, they would setup branch plants in Canada and Mexico. So if your only market is the United States the tariffs will benefit you, however if you sell your products all over the world the tariffs will harm you. Most corporations are global not local. This is big fail as I am now removing my operations from the US and concentrating them in Canada to promote my business worldwide.

This. If I was an American furniture manufacturer. Moving to Canada might be a great option. Canada has the wood, but you will need to determine the access to fabrics and leather. So for example. factory in Alberta or BC would provide the wood, the leather from Alberta and near the coast so if you need inexpensive fabric from Asia it's easily shipped. Canada already has a well established furniture making business so the skills should also be there.

Love from Canada 🇨🇦 I love my Chinese suppliers, we talk a lot. They always say, hi friend. China is amazing and I’m sorry this is happening! I really hope Canada 🇨🇦 will stand up to Trump even if he threatened with 100% tariff! Yes it will hurt us no matter what we should not let him bully us. We will stand strong together as a country. Canadians are the definition of, “don’t take my kindness for a weakness”

Anyone who watches the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" sees the economics class teacher's lesson, that by imposing tariffs, the Smoot-Hawley Act lead to the Great Depression.
I suspect that any American importer who gives a sizable "donation" to Trump will magically find out he will be exempt from a tariff.

@@gamingwithowen2707 Trump has been using some tariffs as negotiations to get other countries to meet with our demands. Threatening tariffs on our neighboring countries if they dont help with the border which mexico agreed so far to my knowledge. Threatening tariffs on colombia if they dont take back their "illegal alien" citizens which has worked. I think Trumps plan is to get everyone to respect America again.

These tariffs are not tariffs. They are across-the-board, unfocused, and without a specific purpose. In effect, an economic attack designed to hurt other economies. In addition, why is everyone talking about American companies or China companies or Canadian companies? We live in a global economy which is predominantly a free market. Trump's tariffs with apply to American companies operating in China. Chinese companies in the US will also pay import tariffs, American oil companies operating in Canada will see the price of their oil go up in America where it is refined. Everybody is going to suffer from tariffs.
