I’ve been really impressed with sE electronics.
The T2 shockmount is actually really versatile. You can flip the part holding the mic over, so that the mic is in "front" of the shockmount, meaning you can easily get the mic really close to a cabinet or drum etc. I have the SE4400A, and I love it.
After seeing Podcastage's video with a comparison including the AT2020 (what I have), and the SE4400a, I was entranced by it. I need to know what to get now, either SE4400a and the T2 but noöne has yet done a comparison with them.
Those are remarkably similar. One thing that I notice is that the simblance on the T2 is *slightly* less pronounced. Very subtle, but enough to notice if I'm really paying attention to the sound. The high frequency peak on the T2 happens in the area where my hearing starts to fall off, so it might sound more harsh to someone with younger ears.
I also found the T2 to have a slightly lower and fuller bottom. Nice mic. SE is doing some great things.

The sE T2 shock mount is configurable - how you had it and also presented forward, effective out of the mount. This allows it to be placed against cabinets or for voice work in more of a slimmer profile. I have the 4400a which is the same unit in a slight different spec. build -actually built a V/O rig around it. 👌
One technical difference: the e100s is a permanently biased condenser while the T2 is an externally biased one. And another: the diaphragm diameter of the e100s is a bit smaller than that of the T2. Mike, it would have been interesting to hear your voice with the other polar patterns of the T2.

Wow! The SE sounds really good! The T2 really likes the lower end of the male voice. The T2 is amazingly smooth just like the e110s! T2 Shockmount is kind of cool. Now, if it was on sale... the T2 might be one of those Forever mics like the e100s. I don't think there is a huge difference for the purposes of VO between the 2. Personally, I'd go for the less expensive one.
Maybe it's because I'm so used to hearing you on the CAD. I listened on my JBL Pro LSR305's and through my Sennheiser HD380s and even my old Sennheiser HD530II's and there was a boost in the presence area of the T2 that was not immediately evident in the e100s. I think there might have been a slight drop for the T2 in the really low end, but it was really hard to tell as it was around the the mid 70's.
Overall, I liked the option of the two different curves for the high pass filtering on the T2. There is a wish that I could have that option for my e100s as I tend to have some rumble from my AC/furnace that I have to filter out in post. I spoke with a few reps that agree that the SE line tends to be on the harsher side at times, but they seem to be getting better for VO mics as they go. It will be interesting to see what they come out with in the next 2 years.

I don't know. I have just heard too many horror stories about their noise issues with a mic that they claim has the "lowest noise floor in its class." I don't have the clout to get them to fix a bad mic or the patience that Mike has, either. The stories out there, including from Mike Delgaudio himself, tell that the customer service is also lacking, and that they will return a clearly malfunctioning mic to you and say all is well. Mike had to send his in twice, AND only got an invitation to address the issue with it after he posted his video. I went for the T2 instead, and sent it to Mike to test.
For the reasons you mention I would never buy a modern CAD mike. An E100 from eBay, perhaps, but not the S. They need to earn back the business and are swimming upstream in that respect.

The Linthicums: I agree. It doesn't matter how good your engineering is if you don't QC, provide good customer service, and invest in goodwill.
i just got my sennheiser hd650's and my usual videos i watch have a ton of echo and all sorts of noise contamination so i needed a great video with great audio quality. great video as always!
The CAD E100s goes on sale on mass drop from time to time for 300 $ thats how I got mine so if you looking for one take a look on mass drop.
They are both good mics. I would consider the SE Electronics for my next mic for the sound quality and the variety of functions available.

Thank you for the post. It may be just me, but I hear no difference using in a quiet place with good headphones. Won't be wrong either way. If I am buying one, I get a CAD.
Damn, the T2 sounds very good! It sounds richer and the CAD almost sounds robotic compared IMO
WOW, the S sounds are so different (with the e100s being much more prominent and annoying). I was like yelling at the screen to switch mics when you were saying words like "hertz" over and over again on the same mic lol.

On my bright K371 headphones and untrained ears with a low pass filter at 8kHz (deaf), the T2 sounded richer. It actually reminded me a little of the TLM103 (cue Mike saying "Mmmmmmmuscular")
I'd have liked to have heard the different polar patterns as they don't have the same frequency response, and the low cut filters.
It's very clear it's a fantastic mic, with incredible versatility that doesn't in anyway diminish it in voiceover use.
I'd probably buy this mic of this comparison, if that CAD's good enough for your voice work, and the T2 is that close it'll do for me

They do both sound very similar, however the sibilants on the T2 seem a little more noticeable to me and ever so slightly harsher than the e100s.
Sounds really good. T2 has a bit more upper mid presence. The CAD still sounds better on your voice tho.
Can definately hear the ringing of metal on the CAD. Mic case or shockmount/stand maybe

the reason you don't hear it is that your voice kind of skips the presence bump on the e100s. you don't have much vocal information there at your pitch. on a higher voice it'd be way more apparent!

The difference is so Minut that you could say they were the same mic.... But the difference makes you wonder if they're different. The T2, in relation to your voice maybe more representative of your natural voice than the e100s but the e100s though. this is a real depends on what your doing setup for these mics.
The T2 sounds brighter/clearer but slightly harsher.

I have several CAD mics, I have several sE mics and get fine results from both. The thing that seems to be consistent with sE mics is they tend to achieve an incredible level of detail and clarity. For transparency sake, my nonprofit is sponsored by sE, but in all honesty, I have always been completely impressed with the build and sonic qualities of their mics. And, as everyone knows, their price to quality ratio is tremendous.
e100s sounds little less fat than T2, but not in a bad way. To me it sounds more "home-studio ready" mic for VO artist. But it seems that different polar patterns on T2 might give more options to a studio owner. Though I really prefer "less is more" approach :)
Can you do the SE Electronics SE2200 a II? I love SE and they make such quality products with such a low price...

For what its worth, i bought one and i love the thing. Great for acoustic guitar, vocals, speaking, or a room mic. I'm sure plenty of other things, thats just what I've done with it. Oh and kazoo! hahaha.

This is perhaps my favourite review by the Booth Junkie.
I tried to buy one of these so much. Both the T2 and the effective T1 (the first version is called the Titan) have intrigued me. But so far I have not had the money when they come up on the secondhand market.
Se Electronics lower end Large Condensors have a reputation for extreme brightness and sensitivity. I did end up buying a SE3300 multi-pattern secondhand, but unfortunately it had was a noisy mic, some problem that when I had it looked at was not worth fixing.
And this is the problem I have with Se Electronics. I can afford the lower end stuff (ie NOT the T2) and it has a reputation for brightness and a lack of durability - over the very long term (ie well beyond the warranty, when they are becoming more vintage). I stress that a lot of people love them and have no problems with them, these are conclusions that are based on my limited experience and anecdotal evidence.
That said I would love to get a hold of a T2, no doubts. And I will be watching and listening to this comparison over and over.

If you're still looking for a T2, they can be found for $350 used if you're patient enough. That's about what I paid for mine.

Your enthusiasm about the CAD E-100s made me want to buy one.
however one of your recent video compares it to the SE Electronics T2 and seems to put these two mic equal. Which of the two you think is more suitable for my use: my home studio is not soundproof and I'm looking for a microphone that records the least possible outdoor noise. Thanks in advance
Can you do a Rode NT1 and CAD E100s comparison please, I know you've done the NT1a comparison but I feel that the NT1 has such a different sound, and I've really liked the sound of both over any others. Also , do you think Ribbon microphones can be a good choice for voice over/vocals?
Arent the diaphragms different sizes??? I think the T2 is a large and the E100S is a midsize.

I find the e100s a lot less harsh , I always find sE mics to be more harsh on the top end which is why I never buy their mics
I couldn't tell the difference between the two. I was wondering, are you running any effects (equ, etc.) on either mic, or are we hearing raw audio from both?

I like the t2 better than the e100s because it’s more open and cleaner
a crap icepick interface pre is going to get harsh on the mid highs, lovely with subtractive eq around 4 on the q settings though, nice, try a prism lyra and end the search :)

You've got a longevity problem. If you keep recommending setups via comparison, you will have a loyal following with exactly the same equipment. I would love to share some of my gear, but I bought it all on your recommendation (NT1, DBx286, etc...) so I have nothing you haven't already tried.
The microphones sound very similar to me.

What's the diference betweem T2 and the 4400a ?
The T2 has a titanium-spattered diaphragm versus the gold-spattered diaphragm of the 4400a. According to SE Electronics, this makes it better able to handle transients for percussive elements, including voice. Oh, and they are different in color.
E100 s all the way maybe, or maybe that's just me.
At times the E100S is less harsh.
Would prefer to spend my money with sE, but to my ears it's a draw.
I'm not surprised you/we can't hear a difference between these mics. I'm not sure your voice is one that allows for hearing a 3-5dB boost above 5kHz. There is very little vocal information/energy up there, especially in a baritone like yourself. Need a woman or a younger kid.
To prove this point, you should "fake" the T2 signal with the E100S using EQ in Reaper. I'll bet 99% of us can't tell which is which.

I think the reason the sE sounds just as bright as the E100s is because it has more distortion in the high Frequencies. The E100s sounds like it has higher quality components. It has a smooth, clean, open, airy sound. T2 sounds very good but not as good. There's a slight sibilant, spitty sound that's common in lower cost Chinese mics. To my ear the mid-range sounds nice on both but has a richer quality on the E100s, perhaps due to the smoother top end
Having researched and tested sE's mics, components, and production practices quite extensively late, I can confidently state that your assumptions are false. sE's internals are, if anything, BETTER / more advanced, technically. Their mics are REMARKABLY good, these days.
That said, the T2 has more noise than the e100s in this test at least. So, in some respect you may be right:)
