  • On this episode of Philimena.com I take you inside the Liberian cultural dance scene! "Music and dance are an integral part of village life in Liberia. The people dance and sing for the departed souls of the dead, at celebrations and weddings, on behalf of important visitors, and just for fun. Liberian dances are often noted for the energy and passion displayed by the dancers. As with most African dance forms, Liberian dances often reference not just the physical, but the spiritual as well. These dances are a way to preserve and transmit important stories and traditions." (worldartwest.org)
    I had an amazing time with this extraordinary group who taught me some moves and made me feel so welcome (even with my lack of rhythm LOL) If you LIKE this video make sure to LIKE, COMMENT, & SUBSCRIBE!

    Liberia's traditional cultural has always been truly unmatched on the African soil. Thanks so much for posting this video. We must never ever forget our traditional roots....sometimes that has been passed down since B.C and A.D.

      @@Adebuea I'm a so called Liberian but I know that statement is 100% false he probably said that because he hasn't been to other African nations to experience their culture. Matter of fact liberia doesn't have culture compare to cote d'ivoire/ivory coast nor Ghana.

    I enjoyed it... However, the dance that you labeled as the "Male Bassa Dance" is not a Bassa dance! Those movements belong to the Dan (Gio) ethnic group where the men do perform in that manner. It is important that we as Africans properly represent our Ancestral arts by knowing all of the cultural details of a particular Song, Dance and Rhythm. My name is Patrice De Lemos and I'm from Angola (Southern Africa), but while I lived in the USA, I had the pleasure & honor of studying under the Greatest Drummers & Dancers of Liberia such as : Nathanial Tatee Sackor, Albert Gibson, Gbassay Zinnah, Nimely Napla, Moses Brown, Jared, Gabriel Kieh, Luseni Fofana, Isabella Fofana, Victoria Tweh, Khata Soribah, Zenweh Bassa Wrecker Gbordoe, Laura Freemon, Janet Sonie Nicholas Brewer, Kassouma, Sarah Johnson, Yomo, Selena, Kebeh Bondo, Oretha Jackson and Fatou Gayflor... Some of these Masters are founding members of the following groups : Malawala Balawala, The National Ballet of Liberia, Liberia Cry For Peace and the Cultural Ambassadors of Liberia. I will always place Liberia as one of the richest cultural secrets among us Africans! Also some of the best food in the world is also in Liberia! Somebody please send me some "GB" here in Angola, I miss it too much oh! KKkkkkkkk 😏👌🏿😂

    • @RoydaUrey
      @RoydaUrey  6 років тому +3

      inovArtesMediaLda inovArtes this was information received from the group I believe their are many cultural dances that are similar I am of Bassa descent and this is a dance from our tribe, because Africans are spread all over the continent you will see similar dances incorporated in different tribal sects. I captured a few moments of a vast amount of cultural practices please rememberer that, no need to speak down on misrepresentation African culture is an inclusion and Fuzion of a mixture of cultures. Appreciate your vast knowledge of the dances and cultures but there is always more to learn!

      Mrs. Royda Urey, just to be clear, it is not a matter of "knowing it all"... However as I stated I spent many years with some of the "Legends" of your country's cultural representation... Please double check some of the names that I had mentioned above. Trust me when I say that this dance is Dan /Gio, I'm an "Ethno-Musicologist" by specialty, I would't be saying this just for kicks. I spent years playing Djembe / Sangba / Sangpa and most of those years was as a "backing drummer". Everything that was in that rhythm that he was dancing to is Dan / Gio... I actually love playing "Bassa Male" so I can honestly and truly say that those "steps" are Dan / Gio... If you double check with that man who is the director (the Elder in the video) of Malawala Balawala he will confirm that dance for you. By the way the "Great Young Master Drummer" Moses Brown (who taught me a lot) is now back in Monrovia he can help you get "proper facts" about the Liberian Folklore... He's also Bassa and he's on Facebook. 😏 👌🏿❤️ 🇱🇷 For Life!

    • @RoydaUrey
      @RoydaUrey  6 років тому +4

      I am not arguing your expertise I am just telling you what we know here in Liberia thanks for your recommendation though :) You clearly have extensive knowledge of dance from all around Africa as I stated we are a blend of cultures and some steps were probably taken from the Gio dance BUT again it is identified HERE as the Bassa dance. The elder in the video is the one who gave me all the information you see here in the video LOL this is not an argument you got it chief!

      It's funny, you say that Liberia has one of the richest cultural secrets. I'm a Liberian living in America and know nothing about my culture. Is there a way I could get in contact with those people which you've mentioned to also learn about MY culture??

    • @inovartesmedialdainovartes2041
      @inovartesmedialdainovartes2041 4 роки тому +2

      es Johnson Nice try, but that wasn’t the point that I was making. You’ve taken "cultural identity" completely out of context. By the way, I’m probably one of the most PAN-African human beings that you’ll ever come across.

    While I appreciate Liberia cultural dance itself, I'm a bit disappointed that very young girls (9 years - 18) aren't given the chance to dance and perform.
    I've watched the R. I. A new terminal opening programme videos and again saw a pile old women performing. They were barely energetic enough to ooze out that vigour that will keep audiences and viewers wanting more and it's a shame to admit.
    I'm based between Europe and north America where young people are given the chance to perform for public entertainment.
    I'm not being rude but the ladies in this video are a bit older and need to retire. They would be well honoured and appreciated as trainers not dancers anymore. An international cultural group should be one that is more competitive and full of never seen before energy levels.
    The guys in this video are younger and okay. They're great drummers and dancers and I appreciate the group effort.
