This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Ford maverick EcoBoost compact pickup truck. We reviewed the Ford Maverick hybrid in the spring, and we were really impressed with it, now we’ve got the 2L Ecoboost Maverick Lariat which is the top trim. There are some key differences between the two models, power, fuel economy and AWD vs. FWD. In Canada, the gas model is AWD, but both FWD and AWD options are offered in the US. The Maverick hybrid only FWD. Let’s start with power, the gas Ford Maverick model has a 2L Ecoboost engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid a 2.5L
4-cylinder matched to an ECVT with a combined 191 horsepower. Fuel economy, the hybrid gets 5.6L/100 km, 42 MPG city and 7.1L/100km, 33 MPG highway. The 2L Ecoboost, 10.7L/100km, 22 MPG city and 8.1L/100km, 29 MPG highway. We find the gas model to be quieter than the hybrid but equally as comfortable. You’ll notice the power difference between the two as well, the 2L Ecooboost is simply more powerful but what you give up in power in the hybrid, you gain in fuel economy. The Ford Maverick doesn’t come with a lot of standard features, you add packages to trims to get the extras. Standard features include, an 8” touchscreen, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 4.2” instrument cluster, manual driver and passenger seats, black onyx cloth upholstery and 17” wheels. The top Ford maverick Lariat trim we are driving has a desert brown interior with bronze accents, a 6.5” instrument cluster, 8-way power driver seat, manual passenger seat, dual-zone automatic temperature controls, noise reducing windshield, power sliding rear window and 18” wheels. Our test model has plenty of add-ons including, the Lariat package for $5,000 CAD/$3,750 USD and the moonroof for over $1,100 CAD/$995 USD. Package features include, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless charger, 8-speaker B&O sound system, Sync3 and blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. Price as tested, $46,045 CAD. The Maverick FWD gas model starts at $21,430 USD, AWD $29,350 CAD, $24,085 USD, XLT FWD $23,795 USD, XLT AWD $31,950 CAD, $26,450 USD, Lariat FWD $27,295 USD, AWD $35,400 CAD, $29,950 USD. The Ford Maverick is the perfect vehicle for people who want the utility of an open truck bed without having to go with a large pick-up truck. It’s great for trips to the garden centre and home improvement store. It has a payload of 1500 pounds and a 4.5” bed, but extends to about 6 feet when you lower the tailgate. The Ford Maverick gets 8.3” of ground clearance for the FWD model and 8.6” for AWD. The Ford Maverick 2L Ecoboost can tow 2,000 pounds and with the optional tow package available, it can tow 4,000 pounds.

That would be a tough call. The Ecoboost power is so nice, but in this day and age the Hybrid makes a lot of sense. I'm glad the Maverick is such a hit. Hopefully it'll prompt other manufacturers to introduce small pickups.

Towing, if you need to tow the EcoBoost is needed.
The AWD is also needed with the Hybrid, snow tires ain't good enough in many regions of Canada. Looks like Zack didn't get stuck in a real snow storm in years 🤣

I agree! If you live in flat areas, maybe you can get by with FWD and snow tires. Any hills to climb you need AWD. We ski a lot so that is why I bought both. I use the hybrid for city mpg and summer road trips, like my OC to PC video series on my channel.

To me it comes down to whether you want AWD and stronger towing capabilities or higher MPG. I wanted higher MPG and went hybrid. The ultimate would be an AWD Hybrid combination. Maybe 2024.

I own the hybrid - 40+ MPG - 75% ordered hybrid but only 50/50 could be delivered. The Hybrid was cheaper but now worth 5K over the Ecoboost. Ford has already sold out 2023 MY and closed the order banks after 7 days. I agree it looks like a truck.

Great review. I like these quite a bit and I might have considered one if it were parked beside my Bronco Sport when I bought. I have the same 2.0 drivetrain and it is a hoot to drive. I’m averaging 9.7L/100 which is fine for me…especially compared to what my Flex got lol.

I ordered my mine on 9/16/2022 . It will be a 2023 model. I will have all the technology under the sun, 30 MPG highway and AWD for less than 38K USA money. Nothing else comes close for that price.

I like the idea of having the utility of a pickup. The ‘07 Ranger (Sport extended cab V6- 80km) in my driveway is a 4x2, roll down window, rubber floor discount ‘Stripper’ …,BUT it always gets some use. Somebody always needs something picked up, moved or removed. I really like this new Maverick. It is a great size, it is ‘good enough’ looking and more than most people really need a pickup for. My advice though… stick to the Strippers. At $46 grand!!! I’d prefer a new 4x4 Ranger, not this… AWD ‘almost’ a truck. Thanks for sharing your impressions.

I agree with you Zack on the front grill. It looks good but the quirk is the headlights as it kind of looks like the letters C & D, maybe Cummins Diesel? Btw, the way they package the Maverick, I find it happens in their other SUV model lineups too.

We bought / ordered the XLT hybrid in Oct.2022 and got a call in Feb, from the dealer that if we were willing to drop the trailer hitch, sliding rear window and bed coating we would get a 2023, if not we would get a 2024. We agreed and our truck was delivered in May. We had never even driven one before we bought but absolutely LOVE our truck. It drives and rides great and has a lot of standard features. We agree we would like the push button start and being able to order things like the sunroof and heated seats without buying a package. Ours was $27,000 ($30.000 with the three features we dropped) and well worth the money. We live in Maine and ski every weekend (2 hr drive to the western mountains) so we would have bought the all wheel drive if they had a hybrid model. But over the past 33 yrs making the trip to the mountains we have always done fine with front wheel drive so we are hoping this truck will also perform well on the snow covered roads.

@@kenhoward3512 After spending some time on a Maverick forum I'm glad I didn't buy an early hybrid. Lots of recalls and lots of electrical gremlins. Having said that, the newer hybrids (2023/2024) are having fewer issues.

Great review of this and on your previous hybrid review. I have on order a 2023 XLT EcoBoost AWD with the FX4 Off Road pack being the only option chosen and that has the MSRP of USD $29,465. The equivalent Ranger or other midsize would be $10k to $15k more which is a lot. Also the Ranger is completely dated going back from 2011 and the new generation that was just launched overseas is just around the corner for our shores.
Ford needs to revamp their package situation, like having a “cold weather package” consisting of heated seats, steering wheel and mirrors, then add push button start on XLT, fog lamps, and make the B&O premium audio as a stand alone option.
I would love to have the hybrid but I also want AWD so by default I had to order it with the EcoBoost, but still way better efficiency than our 2004 Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 with its 13 MPG that we will replace with the Maverick. Now having Hybrid AWD, that would be a game changer for me.

Where a truck comes in handy would be things like picking up that Christmas tree, occasional dump runs, plants and planters for our patio in spring etc and this will fit my garage. A year after ordering it, I've had my Ecoboost Maverick for a few weeks now. I needed an Ecoboost because I needed AWD for a very steep and long in-the-mountains driveway. Glad I missed the hybrid problems and the 5 Maverick recalls. Before you order a hybrid, you might want to check up on owners being stranded on the highway with a glorified brick. I call the Luxury Package the "Stuff Ford Stripped Out To Meet A Price Point Package".
It's pretty solid for a smaller midsize truck, and I'm comfortable with my purchase. I wish I could get it in a two door with a smaller turning radius. I hate that key with a passion. I feel like I barely got my money's worth at $31,500 (USA) for my MY 2022 Ecoboost XLT AWD CP306 SIBL. It is NOT a city truck. I should know as I live in a midsize city. I previously drove a 2013 1.6 Ecoboost with All Wheel Drive as a 'company car' and found the turbo lag & lack of passing power an issue, but it was very good in the snow with all weather tires. (Same for limited off road driving and I tested it regularly as part of my work getting to remote sites.) Really liked stepping up to the 2.0 output Vs the weaker 1.6. No maintenance / reliability issues with either vehicle. And I prefer being stick shifty vs spinny knob so I'll keep this until it snaps off.

In the US, the pricing is a lot cheaper than in Canada. But, you still have to add the Lariat Luxury Package for $2,610 USD to get heated seats and heated steering wheel. If we do that in Canada, we are over $40,000 CAD.

You have to order the XLT 'LUXURY' package on top of the XLT model. I have one that I ordered that way. The LUXURY Package is about a $2,500 upgrade. US dollars.

We have a 22 Ranger and 23 Maverick Ecoboost... The Maverick is a better driving vehicle. The Ranger is a better "truck". I originally wanted the hybrid for the mileage, but changed to the Ecoboost as I probably would have never received the hybrid. I have about the same cost on both the Ranger and Maverick and since the Maverick is my wife's vehicle, I wouldn't recommend her moving up the Ranger (especially at the same price point as my Ranger is a RWD Super Cab, which is exactly what I wanted (Maverick is an AWD with 4k tow). So far, the MPG between the two seem to be comparable, though I had to tune the transmission on the Ranger to get that and make it drive much more nicely.

It would be a no brainer purchase for me if the hybrid came in awd, especially if the hybrid came in the lariat package. Come on Ford, you're so close to making a sale :P

Even with the extra packages it's less money than the Santa Cruz, it can go off road also something the Santa Cruz can't really do.
The AWD is a must, where I live snow tires ain't enough on a front wheel drive car/ute.
The Lariat is a waste of money, get the XLT with FX4 and luxury package. It will cost less than the Lariat and it will come with all that is needed.
Push button start, is it really that needed. Think too many got spoiled by tech that ain't needed, all you need is remote keyless entry, AC, cruise control and AWD.
Towing also is perfect with the EcoBoost engine, 4000lbs is good enough for the majority of things.
The Ranger cost a lot more, it's bigger also. Not exactly what most buyers want or need.

Just when you thought Corolla sedan already available with hybrid and AWD. One has to wonder when will the default truck maker: Ford, will come out with similar combination for their subcompact truck. Its just plain weird to think 2.0T Ecoboost's performance only comes with AWD, while more economical hybrid only comes with FWD. I hope Toyota will come out with a subcompact truck, based on RAV4/Venza's platform, on their bulletproof hybrid system. Given their reliability track record and sales volume of Tacoma, they likely won't be making enough for consumption. Just my 2 cents.
