Contemporary Craft Demonstration - Anticlastic Raising by Anne V Massey
Sussex Guild Member Anne Massey demonstrates the ancient metalworking technique of anticlastic raising. Anticlastic raising converts a metal sheet to a three-dimensional form which features two opposing curves. Anne demonstrates the process using a strip of copper roughly 15mm in width and 0.5mm thickness. The strip has been softened by annealing - it has been heated until red hot and then allowed to cool. The tools Anne uses are a hook shaped tool-steel stake held securely in a bench vice and a thin wedged-shaped nylon mallet. The process allows creation of structural strength in relatively thin sheets. Anne’s jewellery is made in silver using this technique and sometimes the inside surface is emphasized by being plated in 22ct gold.
