I cannot wrap my head around the fact that flight attendants aren’t payed until the doors close/take off. 35 hours a month of free work. That’s practically an ENTIRE FULL WEEK OF WORK unpaid. Why is that allowed? How is that LEGAL. If I’m not being payed, I’m not working. I’ll be there but I’m not lifting a finger. I just don’t get it. How is it legal?

It’s not legal if they make you do any work outside of being clocked in. Point blank. It’s a federal law that if you have to do any work, you get paid.

For those who don't want to do the math: That $31 million that CEOs of Delta and American make? That's $3,538.81 *per hour* -- 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That's $56 per minute.
But yes, the problem is the greedy flight attendants who want to be paid for their time.

My aunt has been a Delta flight attendant for over 20 years. She's never been able to afford to live alone and lives in a home that's split into multiple living areas and has never had kids. During the pandemic when they dropped a lot of them, she spent many months stressing and crying. The worst part? When they rehired her, she lost her seniority/pay raises and started back at square one

As a Flight Attendant of going on 10 years…, THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT THIS! If I work only what I am awarded to fly in a month, I take home about $2,500-$3,000 a MONTH, after taxes. THATS AT A 9 YEAR PAY RATE!
If I work a one day trip, like I did the other day, I had to be at the airport at 2pm and didn’t get off work until 11:30pm….I was paid for 5.6 of those hours. But at any time during my day there, I could have been fired or reprimanded if I was late or anything else.
My airline is paid similarly to SouthWest, we don’t get paid until we’re in the air. It’s called TFP (Trip for Pay). Whereas many other airlines are paid by what is called Block Hours (brakes off/door close to brakes on).
I love flying, but many of us are on food stamps and can’t afford rent.
Again, as a long time PDS viewer, thank you for using your voice for us.

As a disabled person who has flown *a lot* since I was an unaccompanied minor, I've seen how much y'all do. Extremely genuine question - how the HELL are they convincing you guys to start and continue working so much for such little pay? Is it the allure of travel since the U.S. is so damn big traveling is prohibitively difficult/expensive?

    • @MissWhitex

@@lizzyblitz07 in the beginning, it’s the fun and adventure I think. The ability to get on a plane and go anywhere.
But now, aviation is embedded in my heart. The idea of not being able to fly is kind of upsetting. It’s obviously not like that for everyone. But for me, it would literally be like a bird with clipped wings. A sense of freedom that is missing. 🤷🏼‍♀️
And as crazy as it sounds, I’d miss helping people on the planes.

@@MissWhitexAre you a long courier or a domestic flight attendant? I’m French and the situation is completely different here. When you’re long courier, depending on where you go, you get one to two days of rest in a 4 to 5 star hotel before coming back. Paid by the company. Long courier flight attendants spend literally half of their time on paid vacation on the beach in Johannesburg or Rio de Janeiro. It annoys a lot of people. And on the contrary if you’re flying domestic which is more towards the end of your career, you fly 8 times a day and get no rest. So the system doesn’t really make sense but long courier is where it’s at and why so many girls sign up. They live the life for a decade, then they have a kid or reach 35, have to switch to domestic and the wake up call is brutal. Advantages are good though, and pay is very honest, but it’s France.

@@buffywasright I can see why some people would be upset…that sounds amazing 😂
My airline is the 6th largest in the US (if that says anything without saying names). We fly domestic and South America. Most of my trips are 3-4 days long; normally I try not to fly more than two flights a day on those. Our layovers can range from 10.5hrs(FAA minimum rest requirements (although the company will start that timer the moment we’re off the plane…not when we’re at our hotel)) and the longest I’ve had was around 32 hrs (I got an extended layover due to a cancellation (I’ve on rare occasion, seen a 72hr layover)). The company is required contractually to provide our hotel. In my base, LA, we cover 4 airports. So if you’re a reserve with no car? It’s damn near impossible to do this job. Between the price for a crash pash, uber to and from work, along with any kind of living expenses…I don’t know how they do it. It was hard enough for me 9 years ago. We’re talking a 2 hour call out for a reserve that might be near LAX who has to cover an airport that’s an hour drive on a good day with no one on the highway. It’s kinda crazy.
We have some trips that I’ve seen that can have up to 5 flights in a day. And we have a route that we call the “milk run”, which literally brings cargo to some of the areas we land in up north.
My days are normally over 8+ hours long (including report time, pre boarding, flight time, deplaning, etc.) but I’m paid for half of that time mostly.
I tell people I work a full time job for part time pay🤷🏼‍♀️

Neither is a good product but you genuinely can't say "oh we have 80 less calories!" as a selling point, these aren't adults trying to diet. It's literally children. It isn't only kids who eat them but as a non American I assumed that was more for the parents and partly and I could be generalizing here but from the outside looking in, isn't there a childhood obesity issue in the states? I don't think calories should be mentioned about food for kids but if I was to be generous in trying to understand the need to mention calories, would obesity be an influence?

    •  3 дні тому +21

Yep. It’s what I’ve been screaming about since I saw this come up. 230 calories is not enough food for growing bodies. Growing bodies need FUEL and lots of it!
It did open up a discussion with my kids about the topic though! We had a talk about how just because a product has fewer calories doesn’t mean it’s better! And that consuming fewer than the recommended calories could have serious health effects! We talked about “eat when you’re hungry, drink when you’re thirsty” and that children, unless directed by their DOCTOR shouldn’t be counting calories.
I’m seriously worried we could see a spike in ED’s from this. 😢 I’m hoping if more parents have these talks with their kids, they spread it to each other and keep each other safe. ❤

    •  3 дні тому +28

@@101spacemonkeyThere has been an obesity problem for many years. And if the intent was to help with that, I’d argue it’s still pretty dangerous. Diets are between a child, their parents, and their DOCTOR. If the doctor sees a concern, then the discussion is had.
But ED’s can start very early, especially if influential people start talking about food and calories in a negative way. That’s my main concern, the messaging could be taken by impressionable kids and screw up the way they see food. 😢

YOU WORK 12 HOURS YOU GET PAID 12 HOURS... How hard is that to comprehend?!
The only acceptable alternative is to put prices up for an entire flight (ie $300 for NY to Chicago or something) and then let people sign up to work those flights (shifts). Yes I know this would mean that some routes people will avoid because they'll price them too low, but then they'd be forced to up them to encourage workers onto them.
What world do we live in that common sense and basic ethical/moral behavior is impossible to expect. CEOs take home massive pay checks and then turn around and fight against paying workers the hours they actively worked, regardless if they happen to be on the ground or in the air, or if the plane happens to have an open door or a closed door.
Fucking sick of corporate greed, people say we need to stand up to government but let's be honest, if we stand up to corporations and take more hard-line stances, then the government cleans up at the same time. Un-fucking-believable.

The reality is that they work grueling, extremely physical work, the most stressful customer service imaginable with the added responsibility of potentially acting as an emergency worker.
Same with teachers and nurses. They get paid a crappy wage, especially given the education requirements, stress, and essential nature of the work but it's okay cause they are "bettering the world." She described that even though she worked 5 to 6 days a week, she clocked in at ~80 hours of flight time a month even though she had to be at the airline at 5am and would leave at 7pm. I couldn't imagine working 60-72 hours a week, of which only 20 would be paid. Imagine not being able to go on strike to demand fair compensation, if we told Congress that they would only be paid while they were in Washington and only when the "Doors are closed". I thought there was no way this could be legal. Unfortunately, the law seems to be written with high earning senior pilots in mind. Entry level jobs in this industry know that we need the experience so they take advantage of this labor loophole.

Fast food worker here, I get paid 12/hr. If I'm somehow making more than a flight attendant I'd be pissed. We can kick people out of our store or call the police and have them escorted out. Flight attendants have to put up with those assholes while IN MID-FLIGHT. They definitely deserve a higher pay rate, holy shit.

As a former flight attendant in Canada, everything was pretty spot on. To add on to the list of stuff we had to deal, I didn't live in the same province where my base is located, so I had to hopefully make catch a flight to get to my base. I chose to commute, so that part is on me. While I was working for the airline, those flights were free. But since I left, you have to pay to commute to your base. But "don't worry," said the multi-billion dollar company, "you can mark those on your taxes when the time comes!" But we made literally next to nothing, so tell me how that's supposed to work?

Im on disability via a semi truck accident in Indiana, and i was on food stamps for a bit, but after my disability got above $1500 a month, i only got $20 for food. There is no way a person can live off that. As is, im struggling to eat, pay my bills, and get my medicine every month. Food atamps only help if you make no income whatsoever. Otherwise, it doesn't pay enough to help. I could still use $200 at least to help with food, but that is not gonna happen, and it fucking sucks.

One of the main issues with being on reserve (or at least when I was) is that you are on call for about three weeks out of the month. During that time, you have to stay within two hours of the airport at all times. So, you basically end up living in a crash pad for those three weeks each month. You can’t really take on any side job because you’d need to respond within two hours notice. It’s not like you could just drop everything and head to the airport. Once you’re off reserve, that all changes, but if you never get off reserve, it gets old real quick. (The insurance was great, though-haha-I got a lot of health issues taken care of while working for Republic Airways.)

@@B_Bodziak Well, that sucks. That was the only decent thing about it when I was a flight attendant: $130 a month plus reasonable copays. For example, I got my cornea transplant for about $500 total, and other routine visits were like $15. This was back in Nov 2007 - May 2008. Once I got my eye fixed, I quit because I realized I was never getting off reserve. Republic closed some bases, so all the senior flight attendants were taking the regular lines, leaving nothing for us new reserves.

Regarding the flight attendants' pay and really any other industry's pay, it seems to me that the answer is simple: there should be a legally enforced ratio of compensation for the employees and the executives. Your argument would make more sense if he wasn't a tech youtuber, his phones and wallpapers are pretty regularly in videos for various reasons. A comparable argument would a clothing reviewer being asked about their underwear (because the way underwear sits on you affects how clothes lay [a wallpaper makes part of your phone more visually pleasing], even if you rarely see them), not yourself, unless you actually do regularly get asked about those things, lol
Doesn't mean that all those people asking are actually interested in acquiring them, especially for a subscription, but some of them might be interested in the ad-supported version to support the artists if they were particularly impressed with them. Mostly people will just ask out of curiosity though, and maybe look up completely free similar things. Still a weird product not for most people, but probably for enough people to keep servers running and kick a little money towards the artists people genuinely do ask about.
