  • Happy 70th birthday to Philip Sparke! Please enjoy the Marine Band's performance of Sparke's Jubilee Overture on Aug. 19, 2021, in John Philip Sousa Band Hall at Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., as part of the Summer Concert Season.
London-born composer Philip Sparke studied trumpet, piano, and composition at the
Royal College of Music. His first major commission was for the Centennial Brass Band
Championships in New Zealand, and the subsequent international recognition resulted in
commissions from ensembles throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States.
Sparke’s compositions have earned several awards, including the prestigious Sudler Prize in
1997, and top prizes at the National Band Association Composition Contest in 2005 and 2016.
Additionally, he was made an honorary member of the American Bandmasters Association in
    2020.
Jubilee Overture was commissioned for the fiftieth anniversary of the world-famous GUS
Brass Band in Kettering, England, and was premièred at the band’s Golden Jubilee Concert in
1983. Sparke transcribed the piece for wind band in 1984. In the words of the composer:
The work opens with a two-part fanfare-a brass flourish followed by a reflective chorale
for the winds. This builds to a climax as the flourish returns. A lively Allegro follows,
with many changes of meter and a robust tune from the horns and saxophones.
Eventually a cantabile tune emerges from the middle of the band, which everyone then
plays before the Allegro returns. A brief repeat of the opening fanfare precedes a Presto
    coda.

I heard this as an 8th grader back in the 90s. I've been a big fan of your music since then. BTW, your euphonium concertos are hard work 👍

A very happy (belated) birthday to one of the giants of the Brass Band world. Thanks for all the wonderful music (and nerve wracking euphonium solos! 😅) and for the music still to come!

I am a British brass band fan but also appreciate wind bands. This is a wonderful piece brilliantly played. Thanks to all concerned.

For some reason, this sounds very American to me even though I know it is not.
I see a bustling town of the Old West with horses and wagons and barking dogs playing with children.
The Marine Band has really found the fun in this piece!

I’ve played the brass band version several times on both Eb and Bb bass. What an awesome piece, and the wind band version is just as good! Happy Birthday Mr. Sparke!

Hi, everyone. I heard this piece of music for the first time; I didn't know it before.
Thank you very much for the end of the year. The 'basses' gave me goose bumps on my neck and shoulders several times; this effect was reinforced by the use of BOSE. Thank you for that too. Really completely convincing music to be able to go into the year 2022 strengthened. Thank you very much.

Phillip Sparke’s stuff is so good. I was familiar with the brass band version of this, but the wind band setting is very nice too; bravo!

Great performance and recording. Greetings from Austria! Wouldn´t be surprised if it were the Sennheiser MKH800s that contributed to this great soundstage😊

I love this piece, and have played it many times, but boy, is it a bugger for the French Horns!! But off course, made to sound easy in this recording
