CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Norman (Anthony Perkins) debates sending his mother to the "madhouse."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen's master of suspense (and perhaps the best-known film director in the world) when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. From its first scene, in which an unmarried couple balances pleasure and guilt in a lunchtime liaison in a cheap hotel (hardly a common moment in a major studio film in 1960), Psycho announced that it was taking the audience to places it had never been before, and on that score what followed would hardly disappoint. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is unhappy in her job at a Phoenix, Arizona real estate office and frustrated in her romance with hardware store manager Sam Loomis (John Gavin). One afternoon, Marion is given $40,000 in cash to be deposited in the bank. Minutes later, impulse has taken over and Marion takes off with the cash, hoping to leave Phoenix for good and start a new life with her purloined nest egg. 36 hours later, paranoia and exhaustion have started to set in, and Marion decides to stop for the night at the Bates Motel, where nervous but personable innkeeper Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) cheerfully mentions that she's the first guest in weeks, before he regales her with curious stories about his mother. There's hardly a film fan alive who doesn't know what happens next, but while the shower scene is justifiably the film's most famous sequence, there are dozens of memorable bits throughout this film. The first of a handful of sequels followed in 1983, while Gus Van Sant's controversial remake, starring Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche, appeared in 1998.

I get mad sometimes when i remember anthony perkins DIDN'T get nominated for an oscar.
caticia1 😂
We all go a little mad sometimes
He got a nomination for Friendly Persuasion, but I agree that his role in Psycho is phenomenal.
@@samdinnan3351 true he in this film honestly is good acting plus it's good film honestly I seen it plus I have it! 👍❤🧡💛💜💙💚

"She's as harmless as one of those stuffed birds." It's that kind of subtle foreshadowing you only catch once you rewatch the movie.
Meaning what it was MEANT to foreshadow.
weird how he refers to the girl as a bird but then he drowns her with the car after killing her .he didn't stuff her like a bird..but he did with his mother
also foreshadows another classic film by Hitch ; )
Also the fact that they're birds of prey (owls and stuff lol)
@@porcupinesauce3872 he was talking about his mom
For my money, THIS is the most terrifying scene in the movie. Norman is so _intense_ that even though he hasn't done anything bad to Marion yet, she finds herself oddly terrified by him. He is an actual human being giving off serious Uncanny Valley vibes, almost like a robot doing its best impression of a human. Anthony Perkins was brilliant.
Anthony was really handsome and hot as well, I love him as an actor. Too bad he died from AIDS. He will always be the real Norman Bates.
It's interesting that Norman was never angry like this in any of the sequels.
i don't think 'oddly terrified of him' is an accurate description here as he is acting quite intimidating so she's naturally terrified and feels unsettled by his manner and tone. Any person-particulary a woman on her own would feel terrified here. She is a defenseless woman too and he is a 6 foot man- much bigger and stronger so he could easily overpower her.
Shane Folan I think you’re focusing too much on Norman’s physical attributes. The tension in this scene doesn’t come from the notion that Norman could overpower Vivian, or that he’s especially strong. It comes from how he goes from calm, relaxed and personable to intense, accusatory and defensive within seconds, and all without raising his voice or taking his eyes off her. I love the subtle expression change 0:25 you can see fear come across Vivian’s face and she realises that something is very off about Norman.
@@oscarstainton i love what you've said but i just have to note that you might have mixed up your Leighs. Janet Leigh plays Marion, not Vivian.
I love that Hitchcock chose Anthony Perkins to be the Psycho. He wasn't like the typical crazy, ugly movie murderer. He's so damn beautiful. It screws with your emotions and perception of what's actually going on. I think that's what makes it so memorable. Just brilliant.
+mousehead2000 Actually, the first time you see it you think he is covering up for the mother. So you really do not think it is him that he is that bad. Nothing like the first time you view Psycho. Still a great film but once you know the end not quite the same.
+Lshannon90 Hitchcock cast Tony Perkins and John Gavin because of their remarkable resemblance. Watch the scene where they interact in the motel office. Perkins steals the scene. Brilliant performance.
Carl Langley I did not know that! That makes things even more interesting. The next time I watch Psycho I will watch that scene more carefully!
It's so hard because most if the time I'm admiring his looks when I don't see that the character is a.....psycho. Uh he's so cute.
Oscars didn't even nominate him for best actor that year. No wonder why Hitchcock or today Leonardo Dicaprio don't have a single Oscar. Bullshit.
I love how they killed the main character in the middle of the movie
Pretty risky move, but that's Hitchcock for ya. lol.
-A Is For Anonymous Marion wasn't the main character. Norman was. He's the psycho the title refers to.
Abraham Lincoln I know, it's great. Hitchcock tried to trick audiences into believing the movie was about Janet Leigh's character because she was a huge star at the time. When I first saw the movie, I assumed the title _Psycho_ was an exaggerated reference to Marion Crane temporarily going a little crazy when she makes the decision to steal the $40,000.
I thought the movie would be some kind of chase/crime drama about a woman falling further into darkness while at the same time trying to regain her sanity after committing a crime that's eating away at her conscience.
I thought the bit with Norman Bates at the motel was a tiny subplot that would end quickly. It wasn't until I heard Mother's voice that I knew something else was going on here. Then after Crane was murdered, the focus shifted and it was slowly revealed that the story was not about her, it's about _him_. Great movie.
***** For the first 15 minutes or so you think Marion's going to be the main character. And then Mother kills her and you realize the film is about Norman.
Xehanort10 Exactly. Well, it's about 45 minutes in where Marion gets killed.
Anthony Perkins was perfect for this role. He's handsome in an unremarkable way, shyly charming, disarmingly polite, with a dark side. He almost seems to make Norman Bates a fictional version of Ted Bundy, years before Bundy even existed.
Kurt Booth I agree
I couldn’t agree more
Funny enough, the description of Norman in the Novel doesn't match the movie at all. I like the movie version better though, he's a lot more unassuming.
Until then, they remade the film and added Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates. Not very believable if you ask me.
@@samkresil6011 but the actor who acted the Norman Bates in Bates Motel did an excellent job
How he didn't get nominated and didn't win an Oscar for this absolutely amazes me and pisses me off
+AmericanGraffiti Begins I suppose the academy has always been full of stuffy old fashioned film critics who don't like edgy new films too much. Poor Jake Gyllenhaal didn't even get nominated for Nightcrawler last year.
+AmericanGraffiti Begins He wasn't even nominated? I think it was because he was just too damn good. Before Psycho, horror movies were almost always about the supernatural. But Perkins scares us in a way not even Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing could do. And he doesn't ham it up, like Anthony Hopkins did thirty years later in The Silence Of The Lambs (which he won an Oscar for). Perkins' performance is subtle and understated, but utterly sinister.
+Lee Walsh The academy were notoriously snobbish towards Hitchcock movies in general.
Oh yeah! Apparently audiences screamed when 'Mother' was revealed.
Perfect acting, best acting of a psycopath character.
The smile on his face before saying " Haven't you?"... Oh me oh my!
Hes sexy
Alisha Taylor I’m a hugeee fan

Jane Doe Yes, like totally literally. It has that much power. :)
Howard Lockwood I agree. Anthony Perkins was an underrated actor.
Jane Doe uh, that is not what Howie is talking about? Right? Howie?
Jane Doe uh, that is not what Howie is talking about? Right? Howie?
The fact that he is talking about himself in this scene is phenomenal acting, especially for the time period. 10/10 film.
I agree. He is so perfect that I forget every time that he is talking about himself. He does is so good that you actually think that his mother is still alive and that he talks about her. Scary.
holy crap. that moment Norman slowly leans in gives me the creeps.
+Sanny D. as well it should...brilliant acting by both
Holy shit it does.
That's where Herrmann starts his "Madhouse' music
Epic!
yea.... and there's good follow focus there too.
Such a great performance.

Not really. More like amazing.
Both of them are absolutely amazing
Brilliant, and of course more than amazing.
Norman's demeanour suddenly goes from being perfectly calm to filled with suppressed, unsettling, quiet rage in the blink of an eye. RIP Anthony Perkins, you were a fantastic actor.
“People always mean well. They cluck their thick tongues and shake their heads and suggest oh, so very delicately.”
"What's to be done with this Homer Simpson?" 🤨🤔
such good sharpness of image for 1960.
+Alex Pana That's the beauty of 35mm film. It's always had incredible quality.
+Alex Pana It would had even been better in color
+Courtney Cook I don't think it would have been better in colour. It was shot and lit for black and white. Of course this was partly due to budget constraints but his use of black and white and his TV crew gave the film a very stylistic look and feel that just wouldn't have been the same with colour. In fact, I doubt the film would have even been made (or at the very least, it would have been a lot different) if it was shot in colour. One of the reasons he chose to shoot in black and white was so the shower scene wouldn't be too gory for the studio and censors. The studio didn't even want him to make the film in the first place but of course Hitchcock was a master and did it anyway. He pulled it off in an incredible way partly due to it being in black and white. Bit of a ramble this was, eh?
***** How do you know all this?
+Courtney Cook I've read and watched a lot about Hitchcock, haha. Especially when it comes to Psycho. It's one of my favourite films.
one of the most ridiculous oscar snubs in film history
Agreed
A strong second would have to be Val Kilmer's "Doc Holliday" in the film "Tombstone".
Yes! Another travesty is that the film and it's director were not nominated.

Yes. Anthony Perkins was.
darthexcellentious77 In the book, he was really ugly
It's been said that when the Oscar nominations were announced early in 1961 and Anthony Perkins was snubbed in the Best Actor category for Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock called Perkins on the phone and told him that the Academy had robbed him and disgraced themselves.
Swankified Tristan I'm everywhere. ;) Mwuhahahaha.....
Nice to see you too. :)
What I really love about Anthony Perkins is he's one of the few people that really makes his character almost too "real" for comfort. He did such an amazing job, and I really love it all. What I really love more than anything is the subtle little twitches you can see his face barely make. It really adds a lot to the character.
I love the instance right before the smile where he kinda gazes off to the side, breaking eye contact with Janet Leigh. You can see him leaving himself- the senility, and him then snapping back to, I guess, reality. Top-notch acting.
Great catch. So much nuance here. One of my favorite performances ever.
I must say Norman Bates was handsome as hell, wow.
Char Nicole I agree email me at alisha10185@gmail.com make the subject like Anthony Perkins
Yeah like that
Alisha Taylor Andrew Garfield looks a lot like him
In the book he’s a over weight 40s years old man who also a pervert
@@maskedgamerjoker6148 Which is why Hitchcock changed Norman into A Man in 20's and Handsome to make seem like he would be less creepy when really he is. And it's all because of his Mother who wouldn't let him be around girls when he was young.
when he leans forward and says "you mean an institution? a madhouse?" - that would have been my cue to exit.
Hands down the best acting I've ever seen in a movie. I've watched countless films, but this one goes to another level. Absolutely brilliant! I get the chills every time I watch this...
He wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. Proves that they don't mean shit.

Maddie S I agree hehe
We all smile sometimes
When you realize in Bates Motel Norma says "these places can help" in reference to an institution she was looking to put Norman in. He says "Places?!" In this clip at about 30 seconds in he gets all weird about her calling it "Some place" and says "people always call a mad house some place". Attention to detail is great in that show.
Yes,tottaly correct.from my experience,it' the cruel true.put some place.he was wright.I never wish some place like that to anyone, even for all unkindes and people who was treathing me bad!it is a hell, simple in one word😞😟😧😥😩
That innocent, unnerving smile Anthony Perkins gives at 1:58, brilliant.
I love Leigh's "Okaaay, I want to exit this interaction now" expression/tone of voice @ 1:02.
This film is 56 years old and still UTTER CLASS! :-)
Good movies get bad with age?? What was good remains good and retains its quality. What's bad faces history's scrap heap.
Going to be 58 years this year ( 2018 )

My favorite scene in the film. Anthony Perkins switches back and forth from harmless to menacing several times within a few minutes so subtly, it's incredible.
The way he moves at 0:17 is just brilliantly invasive and frightening. Remains eye contact, no blinking, goes from the outskirts of the frame to filling it and crossing that line between the movie world and the world of the audience.
"We all go a little mad sometimes... Haven't you?"
fucking brilliant
I love how half the comments here are people commenting on how effective the scene is and the other half is people swooning over Anthony Perkins
Such a phenomenal and incredibly outstanding actor Anthony Perkins is. I've always thought that and always will. He should have definitely won that Oscar in '61. They were fools. Quite the handsome guy he was, too!
Agreed with everything you say. and love that movie so much. ICONIC.
Definitely. What a great performance that easily tops most of the ones that have been acknowledged with an Oscar. I just can't get it. He should have been nominated and won. And sure he is a handsome guy
What captivates me here is Hitchcock's framing.
Neuroneos That owl looming over him as they discuss mother is chilling… Hitchcock was a genius
Sarah Fennema I couldn't agree more. This has to be one of my favorite performances of all time.
Unbelievable acting by Norman, his sweet and kind charisma is so interesting once u watch the end

He's looking charismatic in this scene TBH
Janet Leigh's performance is incredible in this scene.
in one respect she carries the scene here, the audience identifying and responding vicariously through every nuanced expression on her face.
1:59 that *smile* tho omg
laura Those smiles kill people ;)
It's true...dam'n right
The best smile is the final scene in the film.
Such a good actor. Was robbed of his Oscar.
The way he switches between a boyish, lovely eyelashes cute look and a psychopathic stare is amazing. He was such a perfect choice for this role.
This scene is so brilliantly scary. That line, "We all go a little mad sometimes." And the way he gives that smile right after he says that. "Haven't you?" And she's probably thinking yes, since she took off with the money, and is paranoid about people following her, and knowing about it, but she is so unaware that the man talking to her is even madder than she is. You can already tell she is a little unnerved by his presence and the way that he talks to her, and sets things up. This is one of my favorite quotes of all time. Truly scary, but truly real, because the fact is that it is actually *real.* We all do go a little mad sometimes. It's just that when Norman says it, it is so scarily ironic, because he is truly one of the maddest movie characters ever made. 😠😱😱😱😱😲😲
Norman Bates/ Anthony Perkins was dang attractive. So upset that he died. RIP Anthony Perkins.
Trinity Jillian I think totally the same D:
Trinity Jillian I am a smitten kitten....how could I watch this movie about a dozen times and not really see his eyes? Now I remember, his dubbing voice in my country is unsexy as can be. I'm currently reading the book and the original line is "we all go a little crazy sometimes." The change from "crazy" to "mad" just makes it scarier. Mad makes it feel like she goes on a rampage and loses it. Crazy feels like a way to describe a self tortured person.
Might be simply because Hitchcock was British lmao but I agree

I told you we all go a little mad sometimes...!
Now I have noticed that Norman's personality changes a long with his tone as he comes closer to the camera. It might imply that he had a temperate and a bipolar disorder before he killed his mother making Norman all the more scary.
I have the dvd....Have watched this movie many times. Absolutely brilliant...and you're right. The way his expression changes...in pretty much every scene but in this one especially....shows how his mind is conflicted by his thoughts and those of what he believes to be his mother. Incredibly skillful acting.
MaximillianAwesome007 He is schizophrenic due to the abuse from his mother.

• Dissociative Disorder

I love how the music starts again when Norman leans towards Marion and almost argues with her. Hitchcock was a masterful genius and there's never been nor ever will be a director to match him.

The fact that Anthony Perkins wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this boggles my mind
The Academy considered this a cheap, horror film of little artistic merit back then. Some people considered it disgusting and deplorable because it was full of "unlikeable people". I'm going to give you some advice. When you view something from a historic point of view try informing yourself of the culture and mindset at the time it was released in not something which is commonplace and "normal" half a century later.

“They cluck their thick tongues and shake their heads and suggest oh so very delicately” is a string of words I love so much. I don’t usually admire English for how it sounds, but there’s just something about the way this line sounds, or maybe it just how Perkins delivers it. Anyway, wonderful performance on his part. I watched the movies up to 3, and he didn’t lose a single bit of what made the character great and genuinely scary even though 3 was honestly just a total mess.
Anyway, I love this scene a lot. Probably my favorite in the whole movie.
Director Sir Alfred Hitchcock originally envisioned the shower sequence as completely silent, but Bernard Herrmann went ahead and scored it anyway, and upon hearing it, Hitchcock immediately changed his mind.
Even this scene itself is unsettling. The way he talks. His emotionless face

Great acting. He deserved an Oscar for this. Chilling.
I think in the whole rant about institutions it's Mother talking in Norman's voice rather than the other way around.
You caught on really fast
you are correct...norman wants to be free and live like everyone else but same time like we saw on this clip he want back that old mother what was good and innocent but mother side wants to keep norman locked in that hotel and away from "filthy" girls by any costs...mother's physical form is dead but she lives inside normans head...i truly believes norman is not schizoprenic after all by that sence schizoprenia should be...this thing is more like spiritual possessing...or atleast i like to think it is.
yes but is it really? i think not...first it seems like it but when movies goes on you start to questioning....maybe norman is not personally disordered at all....maybe it really is mother who is haunting him and keep him locked on that mansion/motel.

This movie is timeless, regardless of whether you grew up in the 60's or the 90's. It combines acting and directing to create a flawless masterpiece, a classic that still stands the test of time. Alfred Hitchcock's talent at telling stories has never been equalled.

I always felt and say that Anthony Perkins' acting here is so ahead of it's time that even to this day, you still see some antagonists in psychological horror films follow or somewhat incorporate some of his way of acting here. Truly remarkable! 💯 The fact that the Academy didn't acknowledge Perkins' performance here clearly tells you that they weren't ready for such kind of acting.
I feel that way a lot watching Hitchcocks movies. They feel so modern and while his clearly outdated views on the world are very apparent the performances and camerawork are very modern and are worth praising. Psycho especially.
