Actually I think this story has demonised the character of the emperor too much that it made him almost a completely different person in real history, and it has misled the audience as they would think the emperor in real life is a person like that. Yes, QianLong is arrogant, flawed and selfish, but definitely not into such extent, and he would never be like that in his early mid age or else the country would already be in turmoil (he only got corrupted when he got very much older, but he’s still a diligent king in real life).
Ruyi raised Yongqi and Yongji. During Yongqi’s younger years, the Emperor and Ruyi loved each other and were happy. You can see how well adjusted he is, even as a young man. During Yonji’s young years, the empress and emperor fight constantly and neither is willing to compromise even half a step. You can see how Yonji is a nervous, scared child. Also, all the fighting allowed for a space to open so Ling could slip through and feed him those hallucination mushrooms. Think about how this plays out in real life situations.
