I wonder why the main chartplotters don't do this ... they typically already have all the info integrated (your course, map, depth, AIS, wind, radar, etc)
There's ways to make apps for some chart plotters, but I'm guessing it's mostly due to the alarm / audio requirements. We're not far off from the boats being able to navigate themselves in these situations via autopilot as well.
Your boat is probably the most technologically advanced sail boat on UA-cam. I certainly haven't seen anything coming even close. It would be really interesting seeing you go on a circumnavigation, or at least crossing the Atlantic. Your trip to Greenland is going to be very interesting to watch too. Because while there are quite a number of people going around the globe, the boats they're using are pretty traditional, and they're not, generally, hard core sailors like you. Hopefully one day you find yourself in the right condition to set sail for Australia.
Id be interested in learning more about your past as a career sailor! It's a line of work which always fascinated me, but unfortunately being raised far inland it was never something I put much pursuit into.
your anchor should be shackled for sailing underway in case the capstan releases anchor under the bow and digs in to topple your yacht bow down at speed.many boats sunk that way.
This is a great piece of equipment! I’m curious about what parts of the world are charted ? Thanks Erik for sharing your experience and how this system could have changed what happened to you.
Thank you for introducing and testing a very important piece of equipment but to install the speaker (housing a magnet) above and close to the handheld compass is a bad idea. All the best wishes for your trip to Greenland !
Great and very informative but I have a solid question......when you parked tessi on the island what would you have done if the insurance did not cover the repairs would you have got another contessa or would you have got another toy if so which one would you have got and why ?? Thanks Pete.
Eric, Tessi must be the most advanced technologically craft afloat. Watchit really is a game changer, more advanced than OSCAR which the IMOCA fleet has used in the past. Hope you make it to Greenland this time and best to your girlfriend.
There is already integration between AIS and Garmin Navionics to calculate routes that interfere of the ship with the software and an AIS entry at an adjustable range.. Which actually comes quite close for a moderate amount of power and money. Things will evolve on a tsunami level rate the coming next years, I’m sure.
Watchit needs to be a standard feature on all boats. Even when there are multiple people aboard, accidents still happen. I like that you are open to safety features now, Erik. You were KILLING me with stress when I would watch your other videos! I only watched because your cinematography is impeccable, my friend.
Nice device. And since it possible to adjust how long before it alarms, then you can make it alarm 1.30-2min before at open sea where there not as much disturbances. Have a nice trip!
Hi Erik. I am in Barcelona and I couldn't reach turkey so in August maybe I will have enough income to sail together. Hugs!!! Sorry now I am not ready for efford nothing.
@6:54 on your video , there's a split pin half way out of the back stay clevis pin by the turn buckle ( stb side of the picture frame. Should definitely get it refitted before your rig gets into trouble 😢
This looks like a great addition for safety. You have to contact them to get a price though which makes me think it is prohibitive for the casual sailor. Also I hope people use it for it's intended purpose, and not as a 'baby sitter' so they can sleep whenever they want. I wonder if they integrate it into auto pilot systems to automatically navigate you away form a sudden hazard?
The demand is high since this product is essential, but we promise to get back to emails with all the details. This is definitely for every casual sailor, and our mission is to keep everyone safe, stress-free, and away from accidents.
@@WATCHITsafety nice! you’re based in Israel ? if you need US patent help, I’m an attorney doing software patenting for 25 years. am pretty full, but always find room for interesting tech, especially nautical! good luck, it’s a promising market.
I dont know but a similar system SEA AI does it. It also costs about $50k USD so there's that too. It uses high quality FLIR camera and a machine learning model to interpret the data and warns you of logs, containers, chunks of ice and icebergs etc even in dark. It also automatically detects any man over board. Its like a second crew member that never gets tired, scared or out of focus and can see in the dark
in case you are not aware, you seem to have a cotter pin on your backstay which is not properly inserted. Noticed it as you swung camera passed as you are explaining anchorage and return test. Best regards.

The problem is that the more your boat gets complicated the less freedom you have as things will fail, need repair, need spare parts.... I prefer to run some risk and keep my boat "plug & play" out of it's sheer simplicity. Each year I get some equipment out the previous owner installed. This year it's the radar. Perfection will be reached when all that possibly can be taken out will be taken out. I love my AIS combined with VHF though, that to me is real progress, as well as electronic charts on my reliable & cheap Samsung tablet and, to close it, a deph sounder, all the rest of the electronics OUT. AIS yet has a built in alarm for collision with boats. As for the ground, setting an alarm on your depth sounder may help. I would start with that before yet adding a layer of electronics that would coast an arm, eventually suck your time when it fails (and it will, probably sooner than later, small boats and electronics just don't mix well, specifically older ones as almost all have small deck leak(s)). all that to solve only a part of all what sleep deprivation can cause as troubles. Best is to sleep as much as possible when out at sea. This is the reason single handed sailing was all about heaving to before reaching shore (would stop the boat by heaving to, get some rest, then only reach port or anchorage).
The Marine version of whoop whoop pull up terrain terrain. Glad to see this coming to boats. Early in my aviation career airplanes flying into terrain was all to common enhanced GPWS has almost eliminated it.
Eric, once again a great video and good luck with your trip to Greenland. The technology you were showing in this video looks great, thank you. I have a couple of questions please: What is the power consumption of the boat tech (not cameras, drone etc.)? Did you find that the alarms from the new anti collision kit better than the alarms already installed in the radar and chartplotter? Thanks. Cheers and fair winds.
That was cool! I intend to solo sail next year over some vast distances and I only asked if there was something on the market like this last week on my channel. And what do you know, Erik, to the rescue! We had an auto pilot that had an occassional glitch, and it would be great if watchit could keep an eye on the course whilst i slept too... So I have one question: Can Watchit be set to let you know when you are going off-course?
I wonder why the main chartplotters don't do this ... they typically already have all the info integrated (your course, map, depth, AIS, wind, radar, etc)
commercial ECDIS certified chart systems do this. but they cost insane money and are too big for small yachts
There's ways to make apps for some chart plotters, but I'm guessing it's mostly due to the alarm / audio requirements.
We're not far off from the boats being able to navigate themselves in these situations via autopilot as well.
I guess, lliability. A dedicated company can have insurance for this or just go bankrupt if there are lawsuits. Big company has to much lose?
@@JaredRietdykI installed an external alarm speaker from raymarine for AIS alarms. It would wake up anyone.
Same, it seems like a basic feature of a chart plotter
Good on you Eric. Number one technical sailing equipment channel. We're also cheering you to Greenland
Eric I think you're probably the best sailor I've seen on UA-cam. The things you have put your boat through are amazing. Cheers stay safe!⛵🍺.

Does the speaker (magnetic) don't interfere the magnetic compass underneath?
Hello Erik
Nice tutorial
Tessi became very very technical
Cheers
Looks like a very useful piece of life saving kit Erik. Looking forward to your Greenland trip. Bon Voyage
Now it needs to go to the next level and use available steering and propulsion systems to avoid disasters when you don't respond. Cool stuff!
Yes, why doesn't it steer left or turn off the engine to lower the force of impact if autopilot is blocked? It needs more sensors and cables!
Definitely the best sailing channel on the net

will this setup warn you of ice chunks? if so, how large? what i mean is, what sensor input types can it use, like IR camera, AIS, etc.

Thinking the same thing. good one..
Its not yet aloud pr regulations, to connect any collision prevention to autopilot. I think it should be at least a choice of option🙌
