I always wondered what I would talk about if I met somebody famous and knew better then tell them that they are my favorite guitar player. They hear that everyday. You got to talk with him about something that he will undoubtably never forget and if he were to see you again he will remember you. I met Steve Morse after a show at the bar behind the Cleveland Agora, I walked in and sat down next to him and told him I really enjoyed the show. He smiled and said thanks. I just start talking about my week and how I had spent everyday that week working in my kitchen. I saw that i had gotten his attention so I told him what my wife had done. My lovely wife decided to tear the wallpaper off the wall and had painted straight over the ripped paper and glue and it looked horrible. She was very worried I would be mad but I smiled and told her I could fix it. I skimmed the walls and sanded and skimmed and sanded all week, I had finally painted the wall just before the show. Mark is not just a great story teller in his songs. He is a great story teller. I am so happy he mentioned Sailing to Philadelphia with James Taylor. This will always be in the top-3 of my favourite songs. When I first listened to it and found my two musical heroes in the same song, I instantly fell in love. „What's that metallic sound you're making in the back of your throat anyway?" - „Rock'n roll, Sir…?" this is awesome!
My favourite guitarist. The best one. He has soul in his playing. He also could play fast licks, and did that. The bes one from old school guitarists. My biggest influence in playing and composing. I'm ukrainian, from Mykolaiv, and even there we love him and his music
I am privilege enough to live in the area Mark lived and sang about. I'm so thankful that when I was about 4 my late grandfather introduced me to dire straits and Mark's solo music. I used to sit in the room when my grandpa was strumming away to chord sheets of eric clapton, dire straits and many artists from the 50's through to the 90's, seeing my grandpa play and watching videos of Mark Knopfler inspired me to play the guitar. Now every time I hear dire straits or see a video of Mark I can't help but smile because it makes think about all the good memories I have with my grandpa. Truly from the bottom of my heart thank you Mr Knopfler for being such an inspiration, a great musician and a amazing person. I wish you the best for the future. Much love❤
This is really wonderful to see. For all the footage of Mark talking about guitars that there is publicly available, it's fantastic to hear some new stories from him in a longer form interview.
The Burns guitars behind him, my friend Curtis Johnson, lead player in 'Terry Knight and the Pack' had a six and twelve string Burns in a deep green color. They had a selector switch with one setting, 'Wild Dog." They were so cool, and they were 'British!' Everything Mark says is true. what a lovely interview. Thank you!!
What an incredible grouping of guitars, all chosen by a master of the instrument. I'm grateful for having seen this video, on 21 January 2024, the day after it's release. I won't be able to attend the auction and that has helped me to understand thoroughly, Mark Knopfler's remarks regarding the time invested to reach a point where purchasing the instruments which he really wanted, did not come so easily. The easy acwuisition diminishes the value both perceived and actual. Many thanks to one of the very greatest virtuosos of my time. This lesson was so well worth my time and enhanced my enjoyment immensely. May God continue to bless you richly.
This is a gentleman who was born to be a guitar player and we are *so* *fortunate* to have lived in the years when he got a chance to do so -- no one has ever made the sounds with an electric guitar that Mr. Knopfler has -- they will be reverberating in human hearts and ears as long as there are any ❤
I absolutely look up to you people who got to experience those times. I'm just really thankful that I was introduced to this side of the music industry, a knowledge worth collecting.
@@Samantha-vlly I'm very glad you've found your way to this kind of music -- watching this era of musicians perform live is a great way of experiencing some of the 'spirit' that was present during those days (and there are several great performances of Dire Straits during those years). That MK1 Pensa-Suhr was such a important part of my life as a teenager it hurts to see it going. Hopefully it’s going to someone who’ll play it professionally rather than hanging it on a wall to impress their mates.
In my early life I was not a big fan of Dire Straits but during the last 10 years I have loved, searched for, and spent many’s hours enjoying Marks music. I feel lucky to have found such extraordinary pleasure in the man’s music and the man himself. I regularly binge on anything I can find on UA-cam on his work, music and chat. I don`t think anyone quite compares to him for the fact he is such a prolific writer of great music and can paint a picture in your mind with his playing
Mark Knopfler, the reason why I started playing guitar, my local hero... how I would love to own something from him, but the normal working man is not able to afford this, but what a fun and joy you have brought to the world..thank you Mark.
He is simply the best not only as a musician but as a human being. We know he can not play as before but it doesn't matter his legacy in the global music is forever. Grande Mark.
it made me a little sad when he demonstrated brothers in arms on the acoustic, you can see his right hand shaking looking for the string… none the less, love him and his work. we’re all human after all.
The emotional recognition, sort of coming to terms with the fact that our beloved instruments will outlast us regardless of how many we accumulated, as a musician of 40+ years I’m having to come to terms with this. Mark is a fantastic person to share his emotions this way, it’s so hard for a musician to say goodbye to his true love (s).
Mark you are a brilliant musician. I grew up listening to your music .it's just the type of music you can listen over and over .and still sound like the first time. God bless you and thank you for the music. Much love from South Africa
Great interview with a great guitarist. I had the 45 of Sultans of Swing as a 12 year old. Always love to hear from a Geordie. Lived in Newcastle for a year as an undergrad.
This man is a major influence on my life, both yesterday and today, I named my son after him. I really want to think that he is letting these instruments go to other people to benefit their beliefs rather than his lack of not needing to have to use them anymore. I hope he’s a healthy as I wish and we’ll all be laughing about this comment in 10 years time. Anyway, let’s all just rock it up!.
He's a brilliant guitarist and song writer. Ive been a fan for well over 40 years. One of the reasons I own a variety of Strats, Les Pauls, Schecters, Teles etc. only wish I had a fraction of his talent!
"And when you play THOSE notes (intro to Brothers..), everyone knows where they are." So true. And we also connect with where we have been, connected with the song. For me - 2 immediate images - the Mandela Concert, and MK starting to say something in the intro, and then stopping himself; and the video, shot in B & W for added impact.
Sir MK with or without your guitars. You always want to be the best guitar player. You are the best in any kind. I love this interview💯 Stay Safe🙏🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸💕💕💕💕💕💕🎸💜🎸💋🎸❤
Brilliant interview 👏 a true legend and hero to so many guitarists…including myself! I’m on my back to the North East as I write this, having visited the guitar exhibition at Christie’s today. A brilliant experience, Christie’s have done a fantastic job of presenting all of MK guitars for auction. Highly recommend a visit!
I enjoyed the talk and Mr Knopfler's understatements. I saw Dire Straits on their last world tour here in Wellington New Zealand. The music still works for me now as a pensioner! Fantstic tunes then and in the years after. Many THANKS
"it's just 2 bits of wood isn't it?" Stripped right back - yep. BUT ,- the 2 bits of wood placed in the hands of someone like MK - it becomes magical. Mark and Dire Straits have brought SOO much joy to my life. Right from being a spotty teenager suddenly working out that Sultans had double stops - and still struggling to get anywhere near playing it in the way I'd like to. His music forms such a soundtrack to my life. Never does a week, probably a day, go without me listening to this music.
My dad played me hendrix..acdc .thin lizzy.. santana... Jeff beck...Rory Gallagher..all sorts as a kid......but I also remember him ...going to me...err..check this guitar out...yes he had been to the pub...but he would put brothers in arms on.... on a old vintage record deck n speakers that was infact his dad's before that......and it sounded amazing..he would go to me....listen to that guitar..he loved Mark.. and saw him live in the 80s....he never played a instrument ...but he sure feels his music...I've been playing guitar for about 30 year now... and it all started back then . Brothers in arms very moving piece of music..Great feel n tone.. beautiful
Legend, what a beautiful thing, must be so difficult to let these go, he's had a personal relationship with everyone of his instruments and he's letting lot's of folk's breathe new life into them. Hopefully some kid gets one and becomes a legend 🙏 Thank you Mark
Mark Knopfler Follow the Ribbon am in tears knowing his 🎸 are going to Auction knowing that His Music is coming to an end But one thing I have about Mark Knopfler is the Memories in his Music we love and share lets thank mark for the music he has given us.
I distinctly remember in an interview some years back when asked about his guitar collection he dismissed the thought of selling them by saying he would give them to his son ,or kids ,guess like Ringo selling the guitar Lennon gave him ,time passes things change.
Desde Argentina gracias por existir Mark. Me has dado tanto tanto que no se puede expresar con palabras. Y si fuera poco es un placer escucharte porque no solo sos el mejor musico de la historia sino que ejemplo para los mas jovenes. GRACIAS!
The first time I heard Dire Straits in the 70s I thought guitar is going to change just like when I first heard Eruption. It was such a good time for music. Nothing has compared. He’s humble and has a nice dry wit as well. Nice interview.
Probably the greatest storyteller on real events with a guitar in hand and in the most life influencing melodious sound ..That's Mark Knopfler for me .
J’avais 10 ans. Merci monsieur Mark.
The gold standard. I saw Dire Straits in a club on their first US tour and it was just as amazing as you think it was. Knopfler and his guitars have provided me many decades of immeasurable joy.
Been getting super into knopflers music and learning it to. He has a really interesting view of music and specifically the guitar. Shame i didnt get to see this live, hopefully there will be another one
As lovely and amazing it is to sell an iconic guitar collection, it also symbolises the end of an equally iconic era and its saddening to watch the closing ceremony of a true legend.
In February of 1992 i was able to be standing only 10 feet away from Mark Knopfler during the On Every Street tour. Just watching his hands was a learning experience that had a huge impact on my own guitar playing. I used to use a pick exclusively, but after watching Mark that evening I became quite adept at finger picking an electric guitar.
He’s the reason I play guitar today. This is a lovely interview - it feels like a conversation with a long time friend.
Same here. I first touched an electric guitar because of him. Always Number one in my list.

Great interview with a great guitarist. I had the 45 of Sultans of Swing as a 12 year old. Always love to hear from a Geordie. Lived in Newcastle for a year as an undergrad.
This is the best interview of mark knopfler I 've ever listened to. Great !
Anyway, let’s all just rock it up!.
communiqué - I still love this record
He's a brilliant guitarist and song writer. Ive been a fan for well over 40 years. One of the reasons I own a variety of Strats, Les Pauls, Schecters, Teles etc. only wish I had a fraction of his talent!
A pleasure to listen to any time. One of a kind guy.
What a personality and what a gift to the world. So humble 🌎
The Legend Mark best guitar 🎸 player❤
"And when you play THOSE notes (intro to Brothers..), everyone knows where they are." So true. And we also connect with where we have been, connected with the song. For me - 2 immediate images - the Mandela Concert, and MK starting to say something in the intro, and then stopping himself; and the video, shot in B & W for added impact.
Huge fan.
Love his music, love the man. Great interview but I needed more! Fantastic news about the new album.
This guy had his own unique style of playing... A legend that me feel young again seeing this... Thank you.
Saw him at Red Rocks twice. He and his band puts on as good a show as anyone ever has.
Truly a great
These guitars won't go to players. After the auction they remain entombed in their cases forever. The prices are too much for actual players.
All this wonderful music, thank you for the soundtrack to my life, Mark!
A true legend, calm, modest and 'of the people'
My dad played me hendrix..acdc .thin lizzy.. Brothers in arms very moving piece of music..Great feel n tone.. beautiful
Absolute legend. We love you,Mark! ❤️
We Oregon Luthiers Salute You! Respect!
Good to hear from you Mark.
Legend, what a beautiful thing, must be so difficult to let these go, he's had a personal relationship with everyone of his instruments and he's letting lot's of folk's breathe new life into them. Hopefully some kid gets one and becomes a legend 🙏 Thank you Mark
It will have to be a very rich kid.
@@bpw8139 A rich kid that will trow it away after a few weeks and demand a new toy from daddy🤢🤮
a true role model for any guitarist.
Mark Knopfler Follow the Ribbon am in tears knowing his 🎸 are going to Auction knowing that His Music is coming to an end But one thing I have about Mark Knopfler is the Memories in his Music we love and share lets thank mark for the music he has given us.
His music is not coming to an end. We're all waiting for the new album coming out this year!!
I distinctly remember in an interview some years back when asked about his guitar collection he dismissed the thought of selling them by saying he would give them to his son ,or kids ,guess like Ringo selling the guitar Lennon gave him ,time passes things change.
The guitars, the music and the person ❤️
Excellent interviewer..... Mark is such a gentleman too. Great video. Thank you. 😊
is he auctioning his original 58 LP, Man if he is, that will be a real tear jerker. MK is the best!!!!
I’m just grateful the powers that be put me on this earth at the same time as MK❤️
I note that his red Schecter Strat is not there. Thank goodness. I'd be heartbroken if he gave that away!
The white Schecter isn't present either.
Probably the greatest storyteller on real events with a guitar in hand and in the most life influencing melodious sound ..That's Mark Knopfler for me .
He's in the elite league of guitarists of all time. A unique style and proper top fella.
God I love that man!
He's been such a blessing in my life.
An example of a great man, thankyou.
what an interview, what level. I play guitar because of him. Very good to see him again.
One of my top 5 favorite players ever.
This interview made me sad😢 He's by far my favorite musician/guitar player. An era is coming to an end.
@@RoyHodgson97 I notice a lot of comments about his hands shaking have disappeared.
