You are doing this right by working these things into your budget. Its a great thing to budget, be frugal and get out of debt but you need to enjoy life a little too and your children.

@@marlenehahn5678 she has FOUR KIDS. She is STILL RAISING FOUR KIDS. I guess she was trapped in a bad bad debt in her past. Now she is just trying to live better with budget. I personally live frugal too eventhought i dont have kid yet. Its not so bad. I get her.

I say who cares what Dave thinks! I hope you dont feel bad about these minor things. These things provide activities that you and your family enjoy! Especially for the children! All the steps you have taken is inspiring. You have cut out so much! Enjoy some of that money you and your husband work so hard for!

yumyum215 I agree. Some like to take it to the extreme and don't pay for anything or go anywhere. So they can live like no one else.Pay debt and the other parts of the Dave Ramsey stuff.

yumyum215 but that’s exactly what gazelle intense means. Also these become ‘minor things’ but a thousand little cuts makes a big wound. Like how Dana says we should be careful saying we deserve it to justify our purchases, we should be just as careful with trying to rationalize it with it being a “minor thing.” That being said I saw nothing wrong with what she said in the video, and I can imagine with kids it’s hard to go “gazelle intense” but still we should be careful about how we rationalize our behaviors.

Oh I heart uncle Dave...however, as I'm sure he would agree, personal finance is just that personal! We must learn how to behave/relate with money and apply what works for the life style we want to live. We all have different priorities and values and I for one think that's ok, no two families are alike. Our biggest family splurge food we rrally like to eat around here, lol 😄. For me personally it's hair 💇 & nails 💅...gotta have them done.

None of the things you talk about are outlandish. Your spouse is on the same page and you are providing positive experiences for your children. You are doing a good job.
Don’t worry about what Dave thinks. You are prioritizing your family and budgeting appropriately.
    Keep up the good work

We don't follow Dave religiously. We added some baby steps like having a higher starting emergency fund, and after that.... Saving 1 month worth of income/expenses so we are always a month ahead. We did this before baby step 2. It really made baby step 2 less stressful. This is some of the many things we added. But it works for us. Debt free since 8/2015. We are a two income family but learned to live on less than one income since 5/2016. God bless.

The whole point of budgeting the way Dave Ramsey teaches is to be intentional with your money. Your total made me say ouch but that's because my budget doesn't allow for much yet. When it does I will be ecstatic for me and my family to be able to do fun things that cost money. Money that I have, not credit cards. You are doing an amazing job. Keep it up and you will hit every one if your goals. God Bless.

One of my children is an 'explosive' child with similar issues, and we found karate to be helpful as well. Sadly, our former Sensei is doing other things right now and my son refuses to try working with anyone else. But it was worth every penny while it lasted, so I completely agree that's a priority. Our goal this year (on bs#4+)- eat out MORE! For years, we have barely done so, just a handful of times per year. We're aiming for 1 time a month now, even just take out. It's amazing how NOT having to cook, even just for one dinner, can be such a personal refresher for me (and who doesn't like eating out?).

  • @parmaa3973

Your videos are so inspirational. I think that your children's activities sound worth the price and they are so much cared for. I, myself, only have a low interest debt left (ok, I used the debt avalanche, not the debt snowball method) worth 2 month's income and my priority is travelling. That's my thing and always will be, no matter what any advisor disapproves.

I CANNOT do Gazelle Intense! We were doing it last year through no fault of our own. My hubby took a massive pay cut. I had to go back working as I live a simple life and I want to enjoy my life. Icecream on the beach, fish and chips on a Friday night etc. If I can't have the little things then I just get very down having to say no to everything. I don't flitter my money away I'm still very intentional with my purchases. I practice delayed gratification but sometimes I just want a coffee and a muffin and that's ok!

    • @jenn7753

Rebecca Sankey Yes, it is ok. No one is guaranteed the next day, sometimes not even the next hour. We shouldn’t live so far beyond our means that it causes undue stress. But having enjoyment as we live life is more important than being debt free a few months earlier in my opinion.

If it’s benefitting your kids and you’re not struggling with the cost, I don’t see a problem. I have kind of watched what the Dave Ramsey plan is all about. I agree with some of his methods and some, not so much. My income would be considered to be low income and it’s a struggle to live on whatever I bring home after garnishments. But I have cut out a LOT of things in the last six months. I have purged my house sort of, and plan on selling anything I can to pay down credit card debt. I have a car note. As soon as the credit cards are paid off I am paying off that note as quickly as I can. I know how he feels about car notes. If I had the support system to help me get my car fixed whenever I needed, then I would have no problem giving it up for a clunker, but I don’t have support system like that, being single and all. I don’t have any kind of cable sub( no Netflix or Hulu). But I do have KU. Because I love to read a lot, and that is valuable to me. I very seldom by clothes or shoes. If I do at any point it will be Walmart or goodwill. I have stopped eating out as well. I am doing the best I can with what I have. So count your blessings. You are on a better track than I am at the moment!

I have 4 children with #5 on the way. My husband and I were given the total money makeover as a wedding gift. I dove right in and we have been debt free for about 4 years. But just became gazelle intense trying to save to pay cash for a house not quiet a year and a half ago. I am so over it. I have to remind myself why we are cutting everything out. Sometimes I'll go to a prenatal appt and I'll be so hungry when I leave but I don't have $ for fast food so I'll have to drive 45 min home and make lunch. I think those pregnancy hormones make that tiny little thing seem huge right now lol.

I'm so glad you did this video! I'm trying to get out of debt, but my daughter really wants to go to a private religious school next year. I really want to send her there, but I have been so torn about it. I estimate the monthly cost to be around what you pay for all the things in this video (~$300). I'm planning to save money I get from my extra income instead of paying for tuition with my payroll money. I feel much better about moving forward with my plans. Thank you!

Yes. I don’t follow the gazelle intense approach either. We did for a while when our debts were very big ( student loans), but now that our debts are down to $333 a month (from $1500 at one point), we’ve relaxed some. We don’t have consumer debt, so I feel confident that we aren’t excessive with our spending and live within our means. Our extras include $100 ancillary spending (whatever we want - coffees, day activities, etc), $60 restaurant (2 nights out a month at an affordable restaurant), Netflix (around $12 - it fluctuates because we live overseas and use our Canadian card so it depends on exchange rates), and audible ($20).

I agree with all your expenses. We should not feel bad when we’re trying to make our children better people OR when we (or the children) enjoy doing something. Life’s for living. Well, within reason :-)
My son goes to football (for you it’s soccer) and my daughter takes ballet classes. As a family we go swimming every week, purely fitness thing, and these expenses are just as important to us as food. It’s for life.

I think Dave would be fine with these things. The only time i’ve heard him say no to these things is if you are negative on your budget or you are having to put them on a CC to get them going. We had to cut quite a bit of child activities at first until we got through BS1 but now in BS2 we allow these type of expenses for our kids.

  • @michellehamilton367
    @michellehamilton367 6 років тому +3

I don't think it's fair for you to say that Dave wouldn't approve of these things I would not want someone to get a negative attitude and then not take part in FPU and become debt free. I would change the title to read " Thrify options to save while takeing the Dave Ramsey steps." I think that if you can reach your debt free goals and have these extras the idea is that your still following the plan by telling every dollar where it is going. You obviously can fit these things into your budget where other people may not be able to so keep that in mind a personal budget is just that its "personal." Your justifications as to why your spending these small amounts are good alternatives of how someone might get around more expensive options. I think Dave would be proud of you, and if anything your lack of cutting back more is your choice and might be worth the few extra months that you will add to reaching your goal as long as its not adding years to reaching your goals. God Bless!

Dave R. (as I understand him) tells people to make a plan to get out of debt. He says that everyone should strive for this using their personal method. Sounds to me that you are doing great. Exercise is excellent---keep this up. I am a nurse and an OLD one. Eating healthy and exercise will pay off in a big way when you are old as I am. Healthy people may avoid high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and more. (PS-- started taking my lunch to work 52 years ago & every day. I had no idea this was smart!but the cost at the hospital cafeteria was too much for me to part with).

Can I say that I really enjoy the intro music!? I was really intense about the total money make over and minimalism but then I heard 2 things. Dave Ramsey told a caller "You can do what you want to do. I won't be mad at you. We can still be friends." and that made mevfeel better about not being a word by word follower of the plan. And the guys at The Minimalists. com say "This is our story. Make your recipy from oyr story if you want but we're not trying to convert you." The thing I budget for that dave might not like is 2 new Blu rays a month depending on if I don't have to pay the water bill. Also he would not like how sliw Im attacking my debt but my debt is going down just really slow. This video was fun. Thanks for sharing!

I agree with the consensus here of your readers that lessons/activities for children are an investment ( in the mental/emotional/physical health of the family ). But it DOES take away from the goal of house ownership, or whatever step the FAMILY is on. Asking Grandparents and other extended relatives to fund the lessons, rather than them buying overpriced new clothes/toys, is one possible solution. This also reminds the child that activities do have a monetary value. An older child can contribute , by babysitter/lawn mower/etc. jobs to fund their hobby. When they get to college, if they are on a scholarship, they will be expected to contribute partially, at most schools. So this helping pay, besides having them participate in the family goal(step), gets them ready for higher education. ( Being proficient at other activites besides schoolwork can help them land a scholarship, too. )

Well done Dana first i must say and am new here so my comments maybe off but i don't think Dave Ramsey would have a problem with that budget because 1, they are very important activities especially health wise and secondly you are wise at it you have gone for very affordable rates and for your health as a family it is very smart. Congratulations from me.

Never feel guilty about providing outlets for your children to better themselves both physically and spiritually. CHILDREN that are involved stay out of trouble, learn socialization skills, and develop lifelong lasting friendships. My daughter took piano, played ball. My son chose scouts until he was old enough for band, and my grandson that I am raising was involved with scouts for 7 years, he just stopped scouting this past year. But the people that we shared these activities with have become lifelong friends.

Music, ice skating and dance are things my kiddos partake in and will continue to partake in. Definitely if it wasn't working for our budget I would acquire another job, or work more hours to make it happen. Per month we probably spend $300 on everything.. but when you break it down its $100 per kid. Not bad ! Children are a different kind of wealth.. and there is nothing wrong with investing in them too.

I don't have kids, so my luxury items are fewer and less expensive. 1) Amazon Prime, for the shipping. I'm addicted. I love being able to order without having the minimum $50 to get free shipping. I pay yearly, so it's cheaper. 2) Massages. I got a good deal: $40 for half an hour. At my age (55), this is almost a necessity, as I'm having problems with muscle spasms, and it really helps. I go every five weeks. I should go more often, but it does add up. 3) Professional hair color. Again good deal: cut, color, highlights: $50, plus $10 tip. I don't want to go back to boxed color! I pushed it out to every five weeks from four, so that was my concession.

I include $25 a month for travel. I need to take 2-3 day little trips every once in a while, and it is an actual need. It's in a sinking fund so I have the money when I need it. I also put away $3 a month for gardening supplies for the spring/summer. It doesn't take much: seeds, soil, maybe new gloves, etc. but I want to be prepared. I'm beyond paying off debt...all I really need to do at this point is pay off mortgage. I'm on disability income now so it's incredibly difficult to pay extra, but I can make bi-monthly payments to shave one payment off each yesr. I've never actually followed Dave's plan. When I first left home, many decades ago, long before I Dave was known, I naturally did on my own basically what he teaches. I used a cash envelope system, refused to use credit, kept expenses down to certain percentages (I found in a book which are only slightly different from Dave's), paid cash for cars, saved up emergency funds, (I was always aiming for 3.5 years worth of expenses--never got there but the goal kept me focused on accumulating money. My dad paid for one year of school and after that, it was free because of grants and scholarships. I went back to school mid-life and that was NOT free!! Took a while to get rid of that debt! I used credit long enough to get a good credit score to buy a house. Now, as far as I can see, I won't need it again. I've been through bust and boom times. In one recession I was unemployed for a few months. On unemployment, I still used the same percentages of income I used with regular salary. It meant I might only have 50 cents to put toward a car repair fund, but I still put it. And then there have been times I had a very decent income--more than was common for my field. Etc. Sorry, I seem to go on too long. I have to say that living on disability income is the most difficult time I've been through--other than living on no income which I did for many months while applying and waiting for disability. That's when all that savings and investing came in handy. Well that only goes as far as it does, so now I feel very fortunate to have this disability income. Also there was a time when someone ripped me off for several thousand dollars. That put a dent in financial life. But I've learned how to handle both really good and really bad financial Times. Makes me realize I can feel and be secure no matter what happens and that's a good thing.

If you are following a zero based budget each month and this fits in your budget and you are still paying toward your debts then that is the principal Dave Ramsey want you to follow in changing behavior to win with money. How fast you get out of debt is you and your husbands decision and it is great to enjoy life in the process. Way to go..

Used violins are less than $200 and a fitness tracking watch costs less than $200. Our community has walk/running trails that also has exercise equipment, it's something to look into in your area. I think the pool membership is a great activity and is well worth it. We also have a 3 person family pass that we paid $248 for the year for Carowinds. It includes a water park, roller coasters, and parking for a full year. They offer food discounts but we never eat at the park. I think we get our money's worth out of it because we go 10 or more times a year. Kindle membership, audible app and other types of memberships are a complete waist of money. Most local libraries have FREE ebooks and yes actual books that you have already paid for through taxes, USE IT! We go to the library about once a week. I have found that for a lot of people who are struggling they have more of an income problem than a spending problem. I know they go hand in hand, but I think they focus way to much on spending less instead of making more. Other than your youtube channel it would be nice to know how you are investing in yourself to increase your income. I hope you will post a video on that as well.

We’re on bs2 and have 4 kids. I budget for them every month. Our oldest is 10 and super into sports. I can’t even fathom denying him a season. He plays football, baseball and basketball so it’s pretty much year round with the exception of a few months. I budget for the costs tho year round so it’s never a “ big deal “ to register him or buy him cleats. Sports do amazing things for him. My 6 year old has no interest in sports but is more of a outdoors kid who loves animals, nature, insects etc and will start cub scouts next year. My other two are little, 2 years old and then 2 months old. But I’ll budget for them and their interests too! I think your doing a great job! I feel that it’s very important for kids to have their own thing and pursue their interests even while mom and dad pay for their debts!😊

I'm all about building a budget around YOUR priorities. I spend money on classpass to take nice workout classes, but I don't own a car. It's a trade off that leaves me coming out way ahead :)

We spend money on our kids too. Wish we had gone on a budget before we had kids, but better late than never! We have five kids, ages 15-baby.
We also do karate for the whole family ($40/month), AHG (Around $250/year), cloud storage ($3/mo), $1100/year homeschool co-op for teen (full academic workload).

We had karate lessons and swimming every summer. Yep, I'm glad my parents made those expenses for us. Although, have you checked out your local city pool? Swimming lessons are free. I'm a runner and I've done it since middle school. You are doing an awesome job at providing your kids with physical activities at amazing prices! $89 is a steal! (:

My family is going to take quite a long time doing baby step 2, so I don’t allow myself to feel bad for having things like you’ve mentioned. It helps with my mentality through the baby steps. I think the biggest thing is that we’ve made changes in our spending/savings habits. We’re too poor to sabotage ourselves lol! And the kids need the break, too. If Dave Ramsey doesn’t approve of your modifications, then pffft whatever 😜

I think these are reasonable expenses for a family with children. I’m very impressed that you split the cost for one trip (day trip to Hershey park) or one month activity (pool) over the course of 12 months. Maybe I should do that! The problem is I don’t know what our family will want to do 6 months from now...hmm maybe I should get to planning lol

For the violin, you may be able to find one at a pawn shop that’s it is in good condition. It may be cheaper in the long run. I would ask the teacher what to look for when you go to the pawn shop so you don’t buy one that is bad quality.

If you are past Step 3 and have a good working budget, Dave wouldn't deny you these things! Gazelle intense gets you to this point faster, which is why he advocates it. But if you live below your means and are saving toward your goals, you can spent what you want how you want to.

The Choice of Motherhood, not true. I have heard Dave on the radio encourage a couple to pause their debt snowball to cash flow fertility treatments. He holds parenthood in a high regard. Personal finance is personal. That means you make the choice about what's important to you. As long as you aren't going deeper into debt your plan is solid.

    • @TheChoiceofMotherhood

Wow that's awesome! Most of my current debt is from infertility and failed private adoption so I'm paying cash for this adoption (which is taking forever but will totally be worth it!) :) That's cool that he would still be ok with it.

Our library subscribers for service called Hoopla. It is free for us to use and they limit us to 10 selections per month. A selection is one TV show but episode, one movie or one audiobook. You’re allowed to have the movie and the TV show segments for 72 hours each, but the audio books last for two weeks. You might look into this as a free way to augment your reading choices. My family loves it.

I think it's so important to have some kids activities in budget with in reason because it is a sprint not a race. If you can't maintain it for 2 to 3 years in BS2 than you'll probably fall back into debt.

That's great value considering all your kids do a sport and some family fun sprinkled throughout the year! I think Dave would say u r wisely investing in your family. While we weren't in debt, we were saving a down payment for our home, we started our kids in sports at age 10. Of course it would have been wonderful to start sooner, as a large family (7) on one income in an expensive California city, it just wasn't possible. We love to travel and since international travel wasn't possible, we made it a point to sprinkle camping and road tripping to see family throughout the year which is an investment into the family and our memories together. We absolutely thought it a wise investment. All that to say, whatever keeps you in course and making progress is worth the tweaking of the plan in order to feel happier and keep it going in the long run. Great video content and I'm sure it will inspire others to also make an investment in their family's happiness. Thanks Dana! Blessings, -Katrina

I don't have young ones anymore but when I did it was worth every dollar I spent to have them in things that kept them busy and out of trouble. You are using your money wisely by letting them pick something they enjoy and will keep doing. Also what is wrong with some personal money being spent as long as it helps keep you and your family healthy and happy. I know people who spend that much for one outing each month. No I think Dave would think you are being very wise with your money.

Some of that is a bit extravagant in my book, but I am a single mom. You guys have 2 decent incomes and 4 kids to deal with. I don't think it is unreasonable to allow them each 1 activity. The only downside, it will slow you down a little but that isn't a big deal. My only minor criticism is I would consider buying your daughter's violin of she plans to stick with it. You can pick up good second hand instruments on ebay, then take them to a music store to have it cleaned up, tuned, and restrung, but you may want to buy her bow new. Both of my kids did band. I bought all their instruments second hand. Got great pieces too. Only exception is when kid 1 was in WVU band I bought her a new piccolo.

Do you guys have a recreation envelope in your monthly budget? I think the things you mentioned are good for sanity purposes, lol. I pay $60 a month for my daughter's gymnastics but she only goes once a week. I try to budget about $100 a month for us to do something fun each month since we're not doing vacations right now. I don't feel bad about the recreation expense. Sometimes I don't budget that if the kids are punished, and sometimes it's only $50 a month depending on what we plan for the month. But I think you're doing a good job considering. Thanks for sharing!

Everyone's budget will look different and that's ok. PERSONAL FNANCE IS PERSONAL! It is going to take me 3 yrs. to get out of debt and I have things in my budget to keep us sane. I have eating out, entertainment, and vacation. We live 16 hours from our families so we still have to budget for travel. My son plays baseball and that is a little pricey. All of these things keep my family on board with the Dave Ramsey plan and sane. My hubby want's to take a little trip for spring break and I told him that we would have to do a no spend month to make it happen and I think he has changed his mind. Lol My sister is getting married this summer and I am budgeting for that!
