I dont have the time today to reply to everyone's comments but I am reading them all and wanted to say thanks for sharing your stories, some very cool, sentimental stuff :)
I have two old Sterling silver trays just like you described. They were my granddad's. Have lots of gear handed down from them and my uncle's. Oddly I constantly upgrade my dad's EDC.
Back in the early 60’s and late 50’s, we called these a Men’s Vallet, pronounced “Val-Lay”. Your grandfather’s Valet is a rather nice one compared to most I remember. He had good taste. 👍🏻 -Stephen, Ohio
Its awesome to see a family heirloom that is still being used for a specific purpose. I hqve my grandfather's buck 110 folder and my great grandfathers small slip joint he used to carry. Both of which i carry when i feel like being nostalgic. I also have 2 of my grandfather's zippos
I have my grandfathers old machinists toolbox that he made and i use it to store my knives and flashlights, my grandfather died on my first birthday so i never really got to know him so it's nice to have a piece of him around
Always good to see and retain what our forefathers carried everyday. I have my grandfathers edc pocket watch, wallet, and key fob/chain, as well as my fathers Colt Detective Special (38 spl), badge, wallet, pocket billy club, knife and key fob with keys,
Sorry for your loss. I was fortunate enough to inherit hand tools and knives from my Dad and Grandfather. Every so often, I carry one of their knives for sentimental reasons. My Dad was certainly not unprepared with his Uncle Henry 4" stockman pattern (back when they were made in the USA). No super steel, just a honest, dependable working tool. Most people wouldn't have it if I tried to give it to them but it is priceless to me.Thank you, I needed this video. Best wishes:)
I have almost all of my late father's EDC except for a few cheap items that were too used to be kept... I don't have anything from my grandfathers, I was too young when they dided, but I collect all sorts of things that they might have had back in the day, love antique EDC !
That is a beautiful piece. I'd like to find one myself. Your grandpa sounded like a great man. Very cool to see what Men carried back in the day, and apply it ourselves today. In a tacticool world, it is so refreshing to see some old school, kick ass craftsmanship still kicking ass today. Love the video.
That is a very cool item to have that will forever serve as a reminder to you of your grandfather. This way you might take a little bit of him with you in your EDC everyday.
Very nice Jeff...so great to hang onto the older, traditional family stuff. I've got a very nice cedar cigarette box from my grandfather. I use it as a container for various sized cigar cutters and pipe cleaners now.
My grandfather had something similar. But it is build like a bread box with a drawer at the bottom, when you pull the drawer out the bread box top rolls open, I keep his police uniform pins in the bread box top and my knives in the bottom drawer
Those old timers from back in the day probably “needed” a knife more than we do now lol. A lot of packages nowadays are either perforated or have a “pull here” or “tear here” indicator on them. As for SAKs, cans have pull tops, bottles have twist tops, so that takes away a lot of the purpose of carrying a SAK (at least a smaller one). I think back in the day if you didn’t carry a knife, you probably just made something else you already had to work in its place. Something like using keys to open boxes/packages ,or using a lighter to melt the insulation off wires for electrical work lol.
Hey, I dont really have an EDC place, but I do carry my grandpas on my mother's side Buck knife. Now that my mother has passed away, I carry the small buck knife that my dad gave my mom when they were younger. I never met my grandpa because he died when I was 1 but I miss my mom and the stories that she would tell me of when they went boating on fishing trips and hunting near their house.
folgers coffee can is mine. I also have stacked drawers I got from the pottery barn that holds my knives and spare magazines and a basket on top full of EDC type holsters.
My grandfather was a huge fisherman. I got 2 of his knives. I am sure he had way more but I was only able to get 2. One is a large folder. It's pretty generic, no markings other than 2 gold circles on the handle (maybe 3 it looks like one might have been deliberately scratched off), so I have no idea what brand or even what steel it is. It only says "stainless steel, japan". it's about 11-12 inches from tip to pomel fully open. I tried looking it up but it's hard to know where to start if there is no indication on the knife. I don't think it's very rare or expensive it looks like a department store knife but still cool to me. It has a super tight lock though I was only able to open it when I became an adult. My weak kid hands were not able to open it. And I have a stag handle "Ideal shirt company" fixed hunting knife. It has a natural patina and looks heavily used. I still love it and use it occasionally. I wish I was able to know him when I was an adult, we lost him when I was only 4 but from the stories I've heard we would have had an amazing time being boys together. Thanks for sharing your EDC station.
So kewl. I love your channel. We have very similar interests and tastes. My dad has alzheimers and we lost his dad to it. It's really hard but your vids really cheer me up, (distract me at worst) lol. Thank you for your work and sharing. God bless you and yours my friend!!
My Grandfather gave me the same type of watch. It was a Timex Goldtone with the stretchy metal band the date was broken but I still have it to this day....
In fact, I remember my Grandad having one that he made out of walnut when he was a younger man. I believe it had some abalone inlay too. I'm not sure where it went actually. Wish I had it.
Not sure how many, but I'm sure that there are a few folks that would like to see inside your home, just to see how you store your numerous collections and access them.
My parents and grandparrnts had plates or bowls to drop keys in at home. I used to put mine on a table or hang keys on a hook or peg-- still hang keys on a peg and the rest of my edc stays in my purse and get home bag
Nice man, I have a much newer version of one of these. Has a compartment with a glass door on the top I really like. That said, it's only a few years old and looks kinda crappy already. Your tray is old af and looks great. They just don't make stuff like they used to...
Awesome Jeff I have a few of my grandfathers knifes “he just carried little tiny knifes his little edc tray and one of his rings very special items right now the rings live in the tray but I think I’m going to use your idea once I move thanks great video
I bought a couple of bamboo "cigarette" rolling boards one thats just a tray and another thats got lots of little specific spots for rolling finshed ones a grinder and another for a bic and a spot for "tobacco" buds and a couple of other random ones that i haven't guessed yet they are handy for parts or the few times i clean out my pants i have a separate jumpsuit for work and ill just wear the same pair of pants because I don't wear them enough during the week so i leave them loaded with my gear
I wear my great grandads silver chain (my nans dad) and when he died it was given to my grandad (my nans husband) and he wore it for a few years until my Nan bought him a new chain (on both these chains he wore a little thors hammer that he had bought and also bought an identical one for me on a bit of there string) and he recently gave it to,me to wear my thors hammer on
Hey Jeff, do you have experience with the Imco Streamline lighter? I found a bunch of them from one of our shelves and I thought that it is a convenient lighter and a good alternative for zippo
although I can appreciate what you mean by longer content I have almost 6,000 videos on here so theres plenty of content if you havent seen older videos, some videos are short and some long just depends on the subject but I dont script anything just turn the camera on and hit record...
I dont use everyday but i inherited my grandfathers gold chain he wore everyday, and i wear it with the cross my grandparents gave me that was blessed by Pope John Paul. I only use it for special occasions cause I’d die if something ever happened to it
My dad had a valet just about like your grandpa's. It's still at my mothers (94) but I'll bring it home when she's gone. I have his pocketknife and one of my grandpas. Both three blade stockmans. Dads is a Craftsman with dark wood scales(Camillus or Schrade?), my grandpas a little smaller faux bone gripped no name from Martin and Jones Hardware sharpened with a file until the blades are barely there. My wife recently rediscovered the little three blade stockman my grandpa gave me when I was in 1st grade. A black gripped Imperial that was my first real "knife of my own". I've had beaucoup knives over the years between but those 3 will always have a special place together in my EDC dump spot.
I dont have the time today to reply to everyone's comments but I am reading them all and wanted to say thanks for sharing your stories, some very cool, sentimental stuff :)
Keep up the great work Jeff

Grandad's zippo. He carried it with him thru his 3 tours in Vietnam
Amazingly interesting indeed

Thank you for putting the name of the thing. Now i can look for one myself.

That’s awesome that you are about to continue using this like your grandfather. Definitely a heirloom piece
My wallet I use daily belonged to my Dad who passed away 5 years ago.

Thanks for the video Jeff, it’s nice to see the natural progression of EDC carry throughout the generations.
Love this! Very cool that not only is it really functional, but it has such a great family connection. Thanks for sharing!

That tray is definitely a treasure! I really hope your grandfather got to see & enjoy Philly winning the Super Bowl!! God bless!

That’s a terrific valet, Jeff.
Thanks for sharing the video and the history, Man. That’s what makes EDC fun & a very nostalgic hobby. 👍🏼
That is a very cool item to have that will forever serve as a reminder to you of your grandfather. This way you might take a little bit of him with you in your EDC everyday.
That’s awesome that you have that Jeff.
Love the Maratac, I legitimately wear mine everyday. Great little vid!
That's a really cool lil organizer, I'm glad you were able to get it and use it. Maybe one day your grandkid will have a video on it in the future.
awesome video, you should do a video on your grandfathers EDC showing how he had it organized with his stuff. I'm sure a lot of people would love it.

That old school organizer for EDC knife carry is cool
Nice to see that you hold such things in honor...

Gave my elderly pops a sod buster and a belt sheath. Its now part of his edc. Makes me smile. Dull as hell now though.
Nice! Now gift him a sharpening.

This is awesome Jeff
That's awesome! Your a lucky man. Keep up the good work love the videos.
That is very nice! You don’t happen to have the dimensions of loving to take a run at making one?
My parents and grandparrnts had plates or bowls to drop keys in at home. I used to put mine on a table or hang keys on a hook or peg-- still hang keys on a peg and the rest of my edc stays in my purse and get home bag
I frequently use the Zippo my granddad got issued n carried with him thru Vietnam

Use some oil and a sponge to clean it.It's full of dust. Oil will make it better than new and will preserve the wood...
oh thats pretty sweet.
Found something similar at TJ Max . Great price too!
I have a watch that was my grandfathers and it gold and metal and stretchy like you said
I bought a couple of bamboo "cigarette" rolling boards one thats just a tray and another thats got lots of little specific spots for rolling finshed ones a grinder and another for a bic and a spot for "tobacco" buds and a couple of other random ones that i haven't guessed yet they are handy for parts or the few times i clean out my pants i have a separate jumpsuit for work and ill just wear the same pair of pants because I don't wear them enough during the week so i leave them loaded with my gear
I use an EDC zipper bag, sort of like a bank pouch but not a real bank pouch.
Nice little organiser. 👍
My grandfather only carried a wallet, watch, keys and small penknife. He just put it on the dresser each night. Nothing fancy at all.
I have a Sterling silver jewelry box from my grandpa I don't really know how old it is but I have his cufflinks from the early 20s/30s
I have a very similar edc box from my grandpa. I need to post a video on it !

Loving that tray 👍🏻
