    Your videos are the reason I have a CAD 100S ordered. I was originally going to get a SM7B but your videos have convinced me otherwise. I feel like your channel is really underrated. They're Informative and funny. Keep it up man.

    This was an excellent comparison. I used the NT1-A for quite some time but recently transitioned to the MXL "Harlan Hogan" VO 1-A. I agree with your assessment - the MXL mic seems to do better with my deeper voice than the Rode. But I still keep the Rode as my backup. Thanks for your videos. When I have people contact me the "how do I get into voiceover" question, you are one of the sources I send them to. Great job.

    Love your collection of mics! I have an original e-100 that I haven't used in a long time, but my bro is sending it back to me. Super excited to put it to use in the home music studio, so I got online a little while ago to brush up on its specs. I came across your channel, and have really enjoyed and appreciated the content and info....especially on the different e-100 mics. Always fun to see them in use. :)

    Thanks for the review! I have used ATON of different condenser mics (they're my favorite) and the NT1A is truly one of the biggest bangs for your buck! I have used it on all my UA-cam videos!

      It really is. It can be bright on certain voices, but working it off-axis, or adding a little bit of EQ to tame the highs, and it really is a great sound for the $$. Heck, it's a great sound even if it were more expensive.

      For VO, get the new (black) Rode NT1. Nicer shockmount, flatter response, (meaning it's more accurate, and won't exacerbate sibilance issues.)

    I would love to hear the silence test between these two mics since you got your e100s fixed by CAD! Love your vidz! Just got my Rode NT1-A today and am loving it. The only other mic I have to compare it to is an AT-2020. The NT1-A is MORE sensitive and quieter, duh! :) Thanks Mike!

    Hi... been watching all your videos lately and gotta say love the content. You mentioned streamers / youtubers and that's what got me interested in higher quality audio input. Do you think you could do a recommendation session for mics that would perform well in a less than optimal room with keyboards etc around. Would it make sense for it to be a shotgun style mic?

    On the point for gamers, and this is most likely your different use of microphones, but keyboard clicks I have noticed don't tend to mind many viewers or streamers. If anything, the clicking of the mechanical keyboard gives a vibe of slight superiority, but it can definitely annoy some.
    And I will tweet to you later how mine is positioned, but it is fairly comfortable where it's placed.

    Hey man, I appreciate your videos. I subbed. I was wondering if you could recommend, or even make a video about, the best microphones for singing vocals for someone with a deep voice.
    I found my current microphone, the Blue Yeti, sounds terrible with my vocals for music.

  • @MarkGFL
    @MarkGFL 7 років тому

    For us gamers/streamers its all about a compromise between mic/sound quality and function. I get the best out of my voice with a good dynamic mic up reasonably close which for me deals superbly with the room noise (even though its mostly treated with acoustic foam and bass traps, there is still some). However I hate having the mic right up in my face when I'm either on camera or trying to game! I've4 had some success using a boom arm to hold a mic over my monitor and pointing down at me and am currently looking at some hypercardioids to use in this role, like the AT4053b or AKG CK 98.
    Anyway, another great video - thanks!

    Thanks so much for this, Mike! I agree that the rode is quieter than the CAD. Really wanted to like that mic but had a very negative experience with CAD and Massdrop. Ended up using the new (2014) rode NT1, originally bought as a backup until the CAD arrived, turned into my primary mic before getting a 416!

    • @billweaver2549
      @billweaver2549 7 років тому

      Curious Sean, did you find the NT1 a bit TOO flat for VO work (ended up EQing in a bit more top end)? The response curves of the NT1 and the CAD are very similar, with the CAD's bump being a little more pronounced and bottom end falling off below 40 rather than 20, again something you might do in EQ anyway, so I wonder if the CAD is like a more VO-tuned version of the NT1. Do you still have both now? Love to hear a comparison of the two if you could post. I also have a 416 but mine seems to have way too much going on around 200Hz and lacks crispness, might be outta spec.

    • @seandaeley7079
      @seandaeley7079 7 років тому

      Bill, I don't know if a mic CAN be too flat for VO, haha! But I know what you mean. You're not the first person to say it's unflattering/unexciting. For me, that mic was the Sennheiser MK4, which I didn't even realize until I got the added warmth and bass of the NT!

  • @gmjones2001
    @gmjones2001 7 років тому +20

    I was in a bar this one time. Saw a very hot woman, off axis, to my right. I said something I thought was quip worthy to her... "Your off axis rejection is too strong", she said. :( ...and that is how I learned of my natural super cardioid vibe.

    Entertaining and thorough videos. Thank you. I have a newish NT1A which has recently developed a very overly-sensitive SPL. I get square tops to my wave peaks even tracking at -12db. I have to back off and stand at least 18" from the mic to get it to behave. Anyone any ideas? Moisture sticking the diaphragm? Failure?

  • @panomaniac5399
    @panomaniac5399 7 років тому

    Interesting comparison. I always listen to mic tests on Fostex headphones, and I think the NT1A sound just a little better, more natural. The difference is mostly that the Rode picks up more room tone, as it should. The e100s is drier and more midrange prominent. Maybe that's why you like it? Over headphones, the Rode actually has more low end.
    That said, the differences are subtle. Thanks for the nice test!

    I have Owned this E-100S for a little less than a year and have recorded over 70 Audio books with it thus far, it was an excellent upgrade from my AT-2020.
    I was lucky Enough to be able to buy this on MassDrop for 299.00.... at that time the regular price was 399.00, but NOW as I write this I see the typical price has skyrocketed to 499....$500.00 !!
    I guess demand has risen the price, and this mic was definitely a sleeper and has recently become quite appreciated in the industry more widely.

      Once it gets dirty? Super carefully. It is sooo easy to ruin a capsule that I've never tried it. Not my area of expertise, though. Best advice I have is to keep it in a box so that it doesn't accumulate the dust in the first place.

    I've actually had an NT1-A sitting around the shed waiting for the studio to be setup (yeah it's a work in progress). The sales guy said it was a great mic for the price (for normal singing and guitary stuff I use a shure SM58) so not too sure how this will sound with my voice. I was more concerned changing from a dynamic mic for vocals to a condenser style mic it would pic up everything. The fall back was because it was a good mic for the price I'd use it to record acoustic guitars if it didn't work for voice. Like your videos dude. But that studio ain't gonna build itself!

    I find the Rode to be too sibilant for my voice... It seems to work well for many female voices though.
    Also, it's a HEAVY microphone! I used both the NT1A and the NT2A for a while. I had to buy a counter-weight just to keep the mic-stand boom from not slipping overnight due to how much those mics weighed. Just a bit cumbersome.

    My Sennheiser mic setup is £600 total (including stand, furry, shotgun capsule etc lol), so have always looked at cheaper mics like the Rode NT1-A, like definitely not something I would use (I assumed it won't sound great). But today I decided to try a USB mic I got for £100 a while back from Editors Keys, the SL150 and was really surprised with the sound (not the noise of course, *there was A LOT,* but I have RX so, no biggie), and more tones, so started looking into this CAD one, but now, I will have to get the Rode NT1-A after watching this video, crazy low to non-existent noise floor! So thanks! lol
    BTW Rode, if you want to gift me one ;)

    Hi Mike. Been hoping to hear your voice through an NT1 for some time now ... Finally!
    Well almost, I guess. Being that this is an NT1a.
    Just bought the NT1 (not the NT1a). And comparing the freq.charts of the two (as shown here: blog.reddogmusic.co.uk/2014/10/19/rode-nt1-vs-nt1a/ ).
    Would you say that the NT1a might compare better to the e100s concerning the high presence?
    Maybe we'll see a shootout between the Nt1 and the NT1a in the near future? Just for the pure geekiness of it ...
    Loving you videos. They are pure inspiration. Oh, and also loving the beard.

    The characters I do more are younger and need less bass coming from my voice. I’m leaning towards the Rode NT1A-P. Do you think it’ll be better for keeping the bass away? The bass that my MXL 990 catches makes me feel it makes my characters sound not as airy and light. Does this seem like a good choice for me?

    For the price, I can't complain about the NT1a. However, I haven't pulled the trigger on buying one. A Shure SM-7b (plus Cloudlifter) is still my daily driver.
    I think I could use a bit more brightness to my voice. Then again, I think I sound like I hear more air going through my throat than what I hear in others. But, I might be my own harshest critique. I'm not sure.

    I think the Rode is especially well suited for UA-cam, where the slightly clearer/higher/trebler? sound comes across better on mobile devices. According to my analytics, 70% of my viewers watch the videos on mobile devices, meaning BAD audio, bass gets drowned out by surrounding noise like in the car, on the train, etc etc.

    What is a really good mic if my interests are voice over, podcasting and radio? I am concerned about my environment as I don't have a booth. I have been looking at the Shure SM7B, EV RE20, and the Rode NT1-A. For voice over I can go into a smaller quiet room but for radio I would be in a noisier room. at a desk. Would love to know what you think? Maybe you have one I didn't even mention. Thanks, Troy.

      I also can get a deeper voice to and I do like the proximity effect when you get closer to the mic. Thx.

    When you move your head to demonstrate the polar patterns, you label the mic you are NOT using as being active. Why?

    Great video Mike. I use the Rode NT1 (2014 Version), which has a flat frequency response that is less bright than the NT1-A. I know of another VO who has switched from the CAD E100S to the NT1. If you can get a review model, I would love to see a comparison between the NT1, the NT1-A, and the CAD E100S.

      I'm keeping my eye out for an NT1. Once I can afford it, I'll be sure to pick it up -- definitely on my list.

      Booth Junkie I think you'll be happy with it. It's the newer (black) one that you want to look out for. I look forward to seeing your review!

    tbh i think the nt1a has a flatter profile with a small bump in the high frequencies which may seem contradictory but the cad seems a bit more focused on bassy and lower mid range. Sounds pretty good for podcasts or live recording but i feel as though the nt1a would be more versatile for vocal recording in a studio mix. Usually techies will bump the vocals in the 8k range which is where this mic shines but also has good midrange and balanced bass in my opinion. Seems to be nuemanns little boohoo brother for people who dont want to spend 3k on a mic.

    Thanks for this. Looking forward to one day hearing CAD (which I have on order now BTW) compared with the NT1. On paper they are quite similar: uncannily ruler-flat frequency response with similar bump beginning at 4 and peaking at around 8, but the bump is less pronounced (2dB vs CAD's 4ish) and overall response of NT1 wider, plus cardioid vs super cardioid of course. I'm guessing for vo VO work I'd probably end up EQing the NT1 with a little more tops and a little bass roll off so, hey presto. its curve would end up being v similar to the CAD un-EQ'd. But ears tell the real story of course, not specs. The null point in the CAD's pattern will be useful for me since that's where my (quiet) laptop sits - yes I prefer to have direct access to the DAW while recording and put up with a little fan noise.

      Charlie James You dont. You just upload the audio seperate from video and match it together in any editing program.

    I think the nt1a sounds quite a bit better. More range. At least in your voice.

    couldn't one just EQ the difference away from either of these mics to get them to sound warmer/brighter?

    Watching this about a year later, price point is no longer a valid comparison in Canada.
    The e100s is going for $680 on amazon while the nt1a is going for $300.
    Ergo, the budget consideration is far more salient in making a choice here.
