Your videos are informative and fun to watch. Great job. Love your art. As a new potter, it's videos like this that keep me inspired and hopeful in my journey.
I LOVE THE T-Shirt! 😊😂🤣👍🏼 Happy Birthday wishes to your daughter. If you have a local Asian market, stop in & ask if they have a bamboo whisk. The difference between our (US) whisks, other than made of metal, is that the end you whisk the matcha isn’t connected. It is a lot like thin yet sturdy whiskers. (I love matcha tea in coffee too) Your daughter is going to be over the moon. 😊 I was able to get to the ceramic supply store in Cary (NC) a week ago. I had to wait a week to go because they were out of the Potters Plaster #1. I bought a 50lb bag. Thankfully they added a big plastic bag over it. It poured the whole way there & back. We’ve had so much rain this year. Day before yesterday, according to the local weather station, we had close to three inches of rain over the course of several hours. But I digress. I bought a hydro bat & small rib. My husband was finally able to see one of the kilns I’ve been talking about the last year. He came a hair’s width of buying one. They had the Skutt KM 818 (one phase) on display. I want the next size up. If the area we have planned for my studio will ever dry out, he can work with the Bobcat again. As it is now, he doesn’t dare move it. The ground is so soft from the rain (the whole area is water logged) that he’d likely get it stuck. We did set a price for some ‘crush & run’ pea gravel with sand. It will pack well. The delivery is on hold until the permit goes through. 🤞🏼🤞🏼 Do you remember if you filmed how you made your plaster bats using the planter trays? I bought a few from Lowe’s that should make a nice mold. I wonder if it’s possible to set something in place for my bat pins. If not, I can take out the pins & add a clay pad on the wheel for suction. I didn’t know if maybe you had a video or any ideas that don’t include paying $50 for a cup head & mold set. Thanks in advance. 👍🏼
My goodness that sounds like a lot of rain! It’s so odd to me as in Colorado we don’t get very much at all, I always enjoy when we have a cloudy rainy day as it’s few and far between. I hope it dries up soon and your permit goes through! Also very glad you plaster was well covered on they way home as any moisture can really ruin it. I have not yet made a tutorial on the bats, I actually haven’t been to my supply store yet either just because I’ve had to travel for work a bunch (out of town again this week). One tip, instead of trying to set something for your bat pins, I would just buy a Batmate (I’ve linked it in my videos), it’s amazing. You just replace it with a clay pad on the wheel. Get it wet and lay it on your wheel head like a rag and just put your bat on top. Easy easy and no added clean up except rinsing it out. You really wouldn’t think it would work till you try it. It somehow holds the bat down super well. Thanks for the tip on the matcha whisk too, I’ll look for one to go with it. Thinking I’ll make a little care basket for her with some different matcha samples and a fun glass to enjoy it in. Hopefully I get it done in time, though I can always make it a Xmas present too if I need to! Keep me posted on what kiln you get, that will be a very exciting day!
Lisa, I knew what your tee shirt was & I haven't thrown a pot since college! Good idea for a shirt design. I love your videos so much. Thanks for sharing your world with us. That bear mug is gonna be so cool. BTW, I started using Cog Hill Farm honey last year & they said folks were throwing it out if it hardens. Honey doesn't go bad, learning you can reconstitute it when it crystalizes made me think that I bet wax is probably able to be reheated when it drys out... turns out my hunch was right, Siri said just reheat it, although some artists don't bother trying. I enjoy using wax for treating wood.
Oh my gosh I’m going to go pull the wax out of the trash right now! I’ll try to heat it up and see what happens. THANK YOU!! I’m so glad you are enjoying the videos, all you kind words keep me excited to make more 😊
Thank you for sharing. I have practiced wheel throwing and I still cannot throw a mug. I play with a lot of mud puddles of clay. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent.
It takes a while to get that first mug, but once you do it’s so rewarding! I’ll try to do a video on tips for beginners soon, sometimes it’s just hearing a concept explained in others words that helps it click.
Love the shirt, and love your videos!! I really like your instructional approach and the stories are good too :) (dog/goose/paddleboard, hahaha) I also have a Cricut that I use to make my own stencils; I'm sure lots of people do it but yours is the first video I've come across that mentions it. I'm a new potter that has totally fallen in love with clay - been doing a lot of hand building/sculpture/carving, but I still stink on the wheel lol. I can center all day long no problem, but pulling walls is where things start to go wonky. I'm hoping it's just a matter of practice practice practice - I'm going to keep at it, and next time I sit down at the wheel I'm going to try "pray at 6". Looking forward to watching more!!!
Hi Michelle! Thank you so so much, I’m so glad you are enjoying the content, I’m really enjoying making it. I’m excited for you getting started on the wheel, it really is tricky to start pulling up but definitely try praying at 6 as it really helps you get started going upwards :)
I wanna be friends!!!! You are amazing. I feel like I am watching myself throw….we throw a lot alike. It always amazes me watching other potters throw, how there are so many different ways to achieve a similar outcome. Anyway…LOVE your videos, thank you for the inspiration and knowledge, for being real and for making me giggle. Looking forward to getting to know you more…via internet😂
Yay for new pottery friends via the internet!! I am with you, I love seeing how others throw and make things as well. I’m always just alone in my basement but thankfully for UA-cam I feel like I get to hang with you all as well!
You must have a technical background with your precision and experimentation. I learn from you every time I watch one of your videos. Love the t-shirt!! I lived in Denver for many years and still have family there. I knew exactly what you were talking about when describing the enormous blue bear. I don't want to be stalky but love the title of your video!!
Hi Sue! Thank you so so much for the comment and kind words, not stalky at all I am really happy to have pottery friends in the internet world. I really don’t have any in really life :) I hope my mug does the Denver bear justice, lol. I wonder if he has a name? I never learned if he did or not but I’ve been to that convention center many times for work.
Another great video! You are so fun to watch. Love the shirt. I am going to guess the symbol has something to do with the strength of the clay? I am not a potter, so truly that is a guess.
You’re sorta close! It has to do with how well fired a clay is. Its called a pyrometric cone and was developed by Hermann Seger in 1886, and we use it today still!
Love your art and the designs are lovely. What advice for a newbie about creating a first time ceramics studio? I am especially interested in your choice of kilns.
Oh that’s a great question! I probably depends on the nature of the space you have. If you have access to a sink that is a dream, but I’ve definitely just used buckets of water in my day. If I were to do it again on the kiln I would go a little smaller than my bigger kiln, just because I don’t produce a lot so it’s a long time between firings for me. I’ve really loved my L&L kiln but I’d love to upgrade the controller now to a more modern one. I’ll try to make a video soon specifically for my studio advice! Thanks for the comment and question!
I sooo know where you’re coming from with friends that don’t do pottery. They don’t want to see how perfect all 4 cone packs were or how I intricately carved a piece and then the glaze covered it all up!!! Hahaha. THE SHIRT!! You need to sell those!!! Anne Rule of little street pottery did a video on different handles and it was really great. The biggest problem I see with peoples handles are that they make the handles way too big! I’ve been making pottery for over 30 years! People do not want handles that stick way out! They break much easier and take up too much room in cupboards that are already cramped.
I agree! I think there really is an art and science to mug handles, I’m all about a comfortable handle! I never thought about cupboard space too but you are totally right! The more they stick out the harder they are to store. A couple others mentioned the little street handle video and I just watched it! The attachment methods I’m trying are different but definitely the same concept. Tricky thing is I expect for different clay bodies the results may vary, so I’m just curious about the porcelain that I use. Stay tuned!
@@Lisa.Riland I used to sell my pottery at farmers markets and people would comment about the handles taking up too much room. I think it’s just a common thing that if something sticks out too far it has more of a chance of breaking off. I’ll be staying tuned. Lol
❤ the falling cones short! New subscriber here, and already loving it….not sure if it’s been covered elsewhere but why do u use 2 different water buckets when you throw?
Yay! Welcome 🤗 thank you so much! I have the two buckets just because I like being able to wash off my hands better periodically. I keep a big sponge in the bigger bucket too so I can clean up my wheel every once in a while if I’m throwing for a long time. Not sure when I started with two but it’s been a habit for a while. Of course since it’s to my side it’s not as efficient for when I’m throwing so I still have a smaller one closer.
@@Lisa.Riland I have had zero issues with handles and other attachments with using just the distilled white vinegar or the vinegar and clay. I definitely recommend this method.
Someone else just mentioned her video too and it’s exactly what I’m trying to do, though I’m testing different attachment methods so it will hopefully be a good follow on to hers! Just seeing her use a ladder was brilliant, I was thinking I’d have to build something sort of support system LOL. Yes ladder will be much easier! I’m also wanting to progressively add weights to just see where the connection points may fail. We will see!
Oh it’s actually a vinyl sticker I had cut on a cricket. The video I did on the dragonfly mug shows the process aside from how to make the sticker, but there are a lot of other UA-camrs that have videos if you haven’t done that yet.
The only thing I don’t like is when your videos are over. They are so informative and different. Thanks for sharing all, your knowledge.😊
My eyes just teared up that is such a nice thing to say! Thank you so much, maybe I’ll have to start making them a little longer 😊
