A perfect vehicle for the rapid response force.
The USMC should purchase a few of these to complement the new ACV vehicle from BAE the Cent2 have amphibious capabilities.
The usmc acv is a Italian project built bay the same centauro company.

No they don't way to heavy.
So what do they use then? Stryker MGS or another medium caliber system w/o AA capability like the LAV 25, there is always give and take in systems, the Centauro is what they need based on that capability they they are lacking which is a heavy hitter to support their mobility. Again tell me what will they use, atgm teams or jltv anti armor?
Great design, great work.
THIS is the reason people think Tank Destroyers are real thing today, and that you can get an MBT-ish thing for 1/3 of purchase and maintenance costs, and such weight on top of such platform still allows to punch 70km/h on tight corners.

AMX-13 was a light tank. It had tracks.

Not sure what you mean with wheeled AFVs in this case. Wheeled AFVs have been around since the interwar period.
Actually, it was the South African Army that recognized the need and benefits of an eight-wheeled tank destroyer before the Italian Army did. The Rooikat predates the Centauro by several years!
Different ideas where behind Centauro 1 concept. There was a need of fast armour vehicles to move from northern Italy to southern Italy in case of sea invasion from Yugoslavia. Moreover, it fits perfectly withItalian orography, where tanks are in disdvantage (except in Pianura Padana, Northern Italy).
@Legio XXI Rapax Yes, really! The Rooikat prototypes were completed in mid 1986, given to the military in further numbers in September to December 1987 and early 1988. Some of those tests were actual combat missions into Namibia because it was still under South African protection until Namibia's independence in 1990. I should know, as I was there. If you look at when the Rooikat and Centauro B1 came into widespread service in 1989-1990, then they are of comparable vintage. Otherwise, the Rooikat predates the Centauro B1 in both service and combat by more than a few years!
