- While safety officers and safety engineers both play crucial roles in managing workplace safety, there are key differences in their responsibilities. Safety officers focus on implementing safety policies, procedures, and programs, while safety engineers focus on designing safe systems, processes, and equipment.

Usually Safety engineer reporting to safety officer regarding safety at workplace
The reporting structure can vary depending on the organization's size, industry, and specific management hierarchy. In some cases, especially in larger organizations, there might be multiple layers of safety management, including roles like Health and Safety Manager, Director of Health and Safety, or even a Chief Safety Officer.
two people I really resent because of what they do to people.
1. Salesmen
2. Safety officers
Although I'm a good salesmen, I hate the feeling of manipulating people as it infringes on their free will.
...and although I would probably make a good safety officer, I don't like micro managing people as a job requirement.
there's a tendency for people in safety to foster false beliefs and then demand others comply with their delusions of perfection, usually at the expense of their jobs if they fail to obey.
You see, safety officers believe that you can eliminate accidents... but you can't. All you can do is manage them and when the managing becomes oppressive and intrusive the tyrannical measures of managers hits a point of diminishing returns pretty fast.
No you can't eliminate all accidents, all you can do is approach zero but you can never equal it.
However, in the quest to equal zero the measures taken actually get there become exponentially greater and cost you everything for almost no gains..
You end up loosing your employees.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns openly. It sounds like you have experienced and observed some challenging dynamics in both the sales and safety sectors.
Safety officers, the role is complex and often misunderstood. Safety professionals aim to minimize risks and prevent accidents, but as you rightly pointed out, it is impossible to eliminate all risks entirely. The philosophy of "zero accidents" can sometimes lead to measures that seem excessive or restrictive. However, the core of safety management should be about creating a culture of safety where precautions are a part of the workflow, not a hindrance to it.
Effective safety management involves communication, education, and cooperation across all levels of an organization. It's about finding practical, efficient ways to protect workers while also respecting their expertise and input. The best safety programs involve employees in the process, using their feedback to shape policies that are both effective and empowering.
