You were only supposed to use soda and mentos for the reaction to work. You mixed soad mentos and girl. Next time, you should use the girl to add the mentos directly into the soad bottle, but don't add more than a fingers worth of girl to the mix... It should work after that.

The chemicals are the carbonation. By pouring it into a different vessel they lost a huge amount of it. By the time they were ready to drop the mentos, the coke was already flat. No carbonation, no coke fountain.
It's because of the carbonation from the soda- when you pour it out of the bottle it basically gets rid of some of it and so the mentos can't really make the soda react properly, it has nothing to do with whether the soda is diet or not :]
